That was my understanding that his agent just asked for a team to not get him if they didn't want him for a starter but they can't really keep a team from picking him up and not making him the starter.

I'm not sure what all happens if he decides not to play for the team that picks him up. I must have missed something why does a team have to make him the starter or starter tandem?

I don't think that is necessarily true, I think there might be several teams that see $260K for the rest of the season as a pretty good investment (even if you don't really want Nabokov) just to keep him from going to the Wings. Not everyone has the cap/roster space problems that the Wings have.

It is hard to believe that for roughly $260k no team will want to pick him up, if for no other reason than to keep the Wings from getting him for that price.

What a moron. First off they had to ding Toronto, if they didn't what is to stop a GM or owner from offering $5m to any player who can get 40 goals and then paying a guy like Ovi $3M a year. It is not like the contract lengths where it appeared that teams were trying to circumvent the cap but technically guys could play until 44 years old. There is no chance that what the Leafs did would not circumvent the cap as silly as the violation was. Second anybody who doesn't realize the difference between fighting and icing as fighting is both a huge fan draw and a specific part of the game (for example when was the last time you saw a website dedicated to tracking great icing races) is a moron. Not that I want them to go to touch up icing but it would not be even close to as ticked as I would be if they got rid of fighting.

Yeah if they win a defense would be incredibly hard. I just wonder if he will have the burning desire to try. Could agree more about what a loss it will be when he does retire.

Yeah, I would agree with that. I can see Nick being about to walk away from the game and what better time then to go out on top. I can also see wanting to defend it too though.

I hope Lids isn't done and wonder if the year he is having (leading contender for the Norris) will help him to decide to continue playing. How exactly would you go about that. What player are you going to get that is an upgrade on Homer while tacking on Homer's cap hit to this new player.

I don't disagree with that statement. That does not however mean that his worth to the Red Wings would be greater than Franzen's worth to the Red Wings. Getzlaf is a very multi-talented player and Franzen is primarily a goal scorer. The Red Wings need a guy who just knows how to put the puck in the net and Mule definitely serves that need. His last three year his goals per game were .45, .37 (bad injury that took some time to get back into the flow), and .48 (and unlike Getzlaf he also picks it up in the playoffs with .50, .52 and .81 the last three years). Getzlaf on the other hand had goals per game of .32, .29, and .31 (with no playoffs last year and then .31 and .33 the years before). The Wings have lots of play makers but not an abundance of finishers, while Getz is a great player (and we could use his snarl) I think Eva is spot on that Mule and Flip would be too much for the Wings to give up.

Lids was good last night however, the DEFENSE was horrible hence the 49 shots. Edit: misspelling

First off, seeing as it was a completion of something that only 9 other players in last 93 years have done, yeah it was the performance of a lifetime. Oh yeah and he stopped 46 of 49 shots for a sv% of 93.9% - yeah pretty good game. Not to mention a few other little things like only allowing 1-7 pp to result in a goal. Yeah and he did let in about 10 shots that should have been goals but he managed to stop them. Seriously you are complaining that 7 power plays and and 49 shots resulted in 3 goals. You can say Ozzy hasn't played well lately but you are just completely insane if you are trying to argue that he wasn't incredible last night. Yeah and the rest of the team playing very poorly and giving up 49 shots. Additionally, Lids may have played great but they were without Datsyuk, Cleary, Raffy (and to a much lesser degree Modano). To say Lids had a great game and therefore it should have been easy for the team to win is silly. They were without their one player mentioned as a Hart contender this year, their hottest goal scorer (maybe tied with Mule) and their 2nd best Dman. But yeah Lids was great so it must have been an easy win. Anyway, awesome game by Ozzy, incredible achivement, and hope he continues to play like that the rest of the season. :clap:

It is massive if it is projected out over the course of an 82 game season. If all of the paces hold where they are (unlikely but that is what the difference is supposed to show) it would be 24 pts / 12 wins over second place in the conference which yes would be massive. I agree that 2.3 v. 1.3 would be more massive but is not even in the realm of possibility that would have the Wings with a 189 point season and second place with a 106 point season. While that is massive it is not possible to get 2.3 points per game which would require more than 94 wins in a season (and would be 41 wins more than the 1.3 team). I know you weren't stating that this would be possible, I'm merely pointing out that within the confines of what is actually achievable getting .3 more points per game than your nearest opponent is indeed massive.

I wasn't disagreeing with your statement at all, just merely adding that the helmets also protect from the hits/collisions being so damaging.

But you also have to consider that the flimsy piece of plastic doesn't offer near the protection from a hit as a football helmet does.

Are you sure about that? It is just my guess but I would think that the NHL would have say over whether or not broadcasters can superimpose ads on their games and they surely wouldn't allow it with out getting their cut.
