Yeah Kenny, you suck - we need some guy who tivo's the games and posts on the internet to be GM then the Wings would be super great and never lose a game or a fight again. Lilly didn't get into the fight to "stick up for the whole team" he personally got an elbow from Weber, grabbed Weber's chin and pulled him down, then fought him.
-
Just to correct your clarification Weber elbowed Lils first - then Lilly grabbed Weber's chin and pulled him down.

I agree, it never ceases to amaze me how often you hear I can't believe hockey can't get more exposure or be on national tv/ESPN more often - and then say that any teams not in the northern (and more specifically north eastern) part of the U.S.A don't deserve to have teams, don't have real hockey fans, and are ignorant/don't understand the game. Also, I have heard much worse things chanted at Flyers and Rangers games but no one creates a thread about how they don't deserve to have a hockey team. Furthermore, this forum is full of people who complain about how dead the Joe is and then complain because they Preds are rowdy at their games. Who cares? Seriously, the Preds had a good game, the Wings actually did suck pretty bad that game, the Preds fans had fun at that game and enjoyed a memory making game for their team - but the Wings will be in the hunt for the Cup again this year. BUT it is ridiculous to say that the Preds were any less classy or more crass than most fans - they are a bunch of people who love their team, city, state and have on blinders for them - much like most people here (myself included).

I don't care what Lappy has done since that game (although I really don't think he has changed his game one bit because of the fights with Downey) my post was in response to the statement "I'm not one to constantly say we need an enforcer but do you remember last year against Colorado?" The fact of the matter is in that game at that moment when it mattered Laperriere still laid the hit (which Lids said was not dirty but did get the elbow up so he deserved the 2 minute penalty) even though Downey was in the game. My point being Downey being in the game did not deter that hit even though people point to that as a reason to have Downey in the game. Again, my argument is not against having an enforcer . . . it is against saying that DOWNEY is much of an enforcer or deterrence (however, great guy, great energy, great booster etc.). If we could get a Laraque or a Shelley that would be great but Downey is not even in the same realm as those guys as an enforcer - and using the Lappy/Downey fight as "proof" that he is doesn't make sense to me because Laperriere still got the elbow up on the Lidstrom hit - Downey didn't deter anything.

edit: double post

You mean the Colorado game which had Downey in the lineup. (Don't get me wrong this is not a knock against enforcers or Downy, I think he is a great energy guy with a great positive effect on the locker room but don't think anyone is even slightly scared, intimidated, or refrains from actions because he is on the ice).

 Couldn't agree more. I'll never understand how so many can turn against a guy who has been very loyal to the organization and played for a long time as an important part of the team that they support.
-
True but a double edged sword, Atlanta knows that too and knows if another team picks him up they will get several picks probably at least a 1st and 3rd round pick and possibly a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round pick. That means any team that wants him now will have to give up more value than that.

I don't see any way that this organization (not with the way that it treats it's players ships off a guy who has played 13 years for the Wings and a guy who has played 15 years for the Wings (who also happens to be one of the Wings assistant captains). They have more loyalty to their players than to ship out guys who have been around that long 20 games before the season is over. Not to mention you lose tons of veteran presence (yeah I know they have more but we're talking about being around for all the recent Cups and almost 2000 games between them). Not to mention none of those guys cost much money - get rid of all four and you get a whopping $4,316,666 in cap relief. You only mentioned filling those 4 spots with 2 guys so lets say you bring up Ericsson and Abdelkader to fill the remaining two spots. Those guys cost you $3,114,444 meaning that you just lost 2 long term veterans one with the best face off percentage in the league at 61.1%, and another guy with 16 goals and 36 points (who also got the first two goals of the finals last year which is a pretty big stage to perform on).

There should be no problem having Leino in the lineup (cap wise) once Homer gets back because a player's salary doesn't count when they are on LTIR. That means that every day that Homer is out (assuming that they switch him to LTIR like they surely will) on LTIR his $12,097 daily salary does not count against the cap, add to that Stuart's $20,161 daily salary that didn't count against the cap while he was out (plus Chelli and Mac earlier this season) and it adds up to a lot of cap space that the Wings have. In fact the little cap space that they had plus the relief from the LTIR gives them $1,253,691 (and counting once Homer is placed on LTIR) in cap room. That is cap remaining that means that the could add a player for the rest of the season who has more than a $4.7M salary for the year (because it would be prorated for the remainder of the season). Thus, cap wise since Leino only has a $4,679 daily cap hit and a remaining prorated salary of $116,975 there is no cap reason why he can't stay on the team for the rest of the season (unless the Wings want to make a trade deadline acquisition for a big contract player and use the cap for him). Really, the only problem with Leino staying up after Homer comes back is if there will be a roster space available for him since they are already rotating out a 4th line guy. However, with the way that he is playing it would not surprise me if they kept him up (unless they want him to keep getting big minutes in GR for a while longer before the playoffs).

People (myself and most others on this forum included) say we all the time whether on this forum or others when they are talking about the their team (which technically it's not their team either since they have no ownership interest in then franchise). Don't be such a D-Bag about it. By the way CaliWingsNut before saying someone else "reserves the right to be stupid" you should make sure you don't have a reservation yourself. Here are some quotes from you using exactly the same term:
-
While he doesn't really need to learn the offensive zone positioning the different defensive schemes and who play them is very important to a goalie. For example, think of both Cujo and Hasek - both great goalies before they came to the Red Wings, both did not play near as well initially when they got here. Hasek adapted to playing for the Wings but Cujo never really did. It is very different facing 23-25 shots per game and facing 30-32 shots per game. The Wings are a puck possession team and thus control the puck the majority of the time during a game. Some goalies cannot play well or take a while to adjust to not seeing a shot for 4-5 minute stretches and don't play as well if they don't get in the groove (and stay in the groove) by making fairly continuous saves. Also, because the Wings are such a good team they don't need their goalie to regularly save them or carry the team some goalies (such as Cujo) seem to really struggle on a team where they aren't required, expected, or able to be brilliant night in and night out.
-
If you're talking about Cam Ward that is not the same thing. Cam Ward was drafted by Carolina in 2002 stayed within the organization and played 28 regular season games for Carolina that year. He was with the team the whole year and had chemistry, he had gone on the road trips, been through the injuries and the slumps. It's true that he didn't start the playoffs but he played with the team the whole year which would not be the case with a guy brought in with 22 games left in the season (and there would be quite a few less than that by the time a trade could actually be made, the player passed the physical, joined the team and started a game).
-
Agreed, no way we go after a goalie, too many chemistry problems and we would have to blow up major portions of the team either this season with the team or with guys that we couldn't sign in the off season. I sure don't see any way we go after a goalie that we will have to give a fair bit up to get, who has never played a game with this team or in this system (with only 22 games left in the season) and has only played 11 playoff games in his career. There is no way that Kenny says, "Hey we have the 3rd best record in the league, lets trade away talent or future for a goalie who will have almost no time to get to know our team or system, has never proven himself in the playoffs, has never had the pressure of coming into the defending Cup champions locker room and and playing the "savior" (which we don't really need) for a team and city that is notoriously hard on a goalie. What they heck its a huge gamble but maybe it will work out." There is no way that he does this - this is (in my opinion) something that you try on NHL 2009 but not in real life and not something that any GM in Holland's position would ever even consider doing. You're going to tell Conks thanks for all the wins and shutouts this year but were going to go with a different unproven guy who hasn't played with the team or Ozzy (yeah I know he hasn't been good this year) I know you have 3 Cups and tons of playoff experience but I just wanted to make a trade. The only thing that I think we might get is a veteran 4th line grit guy (like has been discussed in numerous threads).

It has nothing to do with your name, it has to do with the fact that almost every post you belittle, insult, and demean anyone who happens to disagree with you. I didn't post the funny pictures because I disagree with you but because you act like everyone who disagrees with you is stupid, has no right to be on this forum, and isn't really a Wings fan. You refuse to let anyone disagree with you without your calling them stupid and acting as if they cannot have differing opinions. I could care less if you disagree with me or anyone else, what sucks and warrants (in my opinion) the pictures is the way you treat those who disagree with you. -
That reads funny But I agree with your statement. It's not like Hossa held out a long time, I think it was mostly sour grapes (by the Pens fans) because we beat them then took Hossa for less money than they offered him.
-
You may not care (in fact most people probably don't) but I have always had a weird fascination with idioms. The phrase is actually "throw down the gauntlet." The expression goes back to Medieval times. Throwing down the gauntlet was a knight’s method of challenging another knight to a duel. If/when the other knight picked up the gauntlet that was the method for accepting the challenge. Thus, in this situation you would throw down the gauntlet and whomever wishes to accept your challenge would be the one to pick up the gauntlet. Again, really not trying to be a jerk or play gotcha, I just am interested in sayings and their origins. (Yeah I know - kinda dorky).

Understand and agree but the real problem is likely to be 2010-2011 if like many are projecting the cap drops more than 10% (I'm not sure it will but it still has to be a concern because it might and some smart people think it will) then the Wings have to figure out how to shed close to 10% of their contracts because they will be running so close to the cap. That is when a $1.2-1.5M player who produces like Sammy will be missed.

That's just pretty brash and uncalled for especially when the topic and discussion is so subjective.
