Franzen out 3-4 weeks; more tests Monday

Your analogy to gambling is not quite correct for example if you are flipping a coin and trying to get tails but you get heads 99 times, while it is true that you only have a 1/2 chance of it landing on tails you only have a 1^100 power chance of getting 100 heads in a row. Basically, while the odds don't change the number of possibilities increase. Someone may tear their ACL and later in the season their Achilles tendon and later in the season break your collar bone but the number of possibilities of all of that happening to one player are much less remote than any one of them. Someone sent me some info regarding exactly how the probabilities work, here it is: A chance of something happening is, simply, the count (or total) of what is required as a ratio of all possible outcomes. When you reach the 7th throw, the chance of a head on that particular throw is 1/2, and obviously that's because, for that throw only, a head is the one result required out of 2 possible results - and that's always the case for any particular throw. So, what you may require from one throw is different from what you may require from a series of throws. If we look at a series of throws: For two throws, the reason why HH has a probability of 1/4 isn't because we multiply 1/2 by 1/2 - that's just a method of counting. The 1/4 represents one required result (i.e. HH) from four possible results (i.e. HH, HT, TH and TT). If we throw the coin three times, the possible results are: Three heads: 1 way Two heads and one tail: 3 ways Two tails and one head: 3 ways Three tails: 1 way Total: 8 ways So the chances of getting three heads are 1/8 (and the method for calculating this quickly is (1/2)^3). But note that there are 3 ways of getting two heads and a tail, so the probability of this is 3/8. You can count in this manner all the way up to seven throws and beyond (if you have the time and patience to do it!) so that, for seven throws, you get the possibility of: 7H: 1 way 6H and 1T: 7 ways 5H and 2T: 21 ways 4H and 3T: 35 ways 3H and 4T: 35 ways 2H and 5T: 21 ways 1H and 6T: 7 ways 7T: 1 way Total: 128 ways Finally, the chances for seven heads are the same if you throw a single coin seven times, or if you throw seven coins at once, or seven people each throw a single coin, or any other combination of seven throws. That's because (as long as each throw is fair) the number of possible outcomes is always 128, and the number of times you can get seven heads is always one, so the probability of seven heads will always be 1/128.

Legace injures himself on Palin's carpet

Actually, it does have to do with voting democratic but you are right that Michigan is losing manufacturing jobs to overseas markets. The democratic party is for higher corporate taxes (2nd highest in the world of industrialized countries), much stricter exhaust and other EPA standards, and other restrictions on businesses and corporations (such as OSHA, IFTA, RLUPA, Title VII, and other regulations) - (some of these may be good ideas but put much more restrictions on American corporations than other countries and therefore make companies want to relocate there as opposed to here. Look at GM, Chevrolet, and Ford sales globally as compared to the US. They are doing well (or were before this global economic slowdown), it is only in America that they are having major sales problems. There are TOO many regulations on automobiles manufactured in the United States (for instance until recently everyone wanted to buy an SUV but auto makers were required to manufacture a certain percentage of autos with high MPG that made them manufacture more smaller cars which were not selling well rather than the lower MPG SUV's which were selling well). For a great example look at when Chrysler Corporation (a US corporation) merged with Daimler-Benz (a German Corporation) in 1998 to create DaimlerChrysler. The newly formed corporation debated about whether the USA or Germany was the best place to incorporate, have corporate headquarters, and manufacturing plants. DaimlerChrysler chose Germany largely (they stated) because of corporate and shareholder tax rates, restrictions on manufacturing and employees, and sales exports. Taxes were the major reason, not only does the USA have the 2nd highest rate of an industrialized country but also the USA taxes ALL income worldwide, regardless of taxes paid to other countries (which most other countries do not or at least reduce) which increases the overall tax. So it really does matter.

You obviously have no idea what you are talking about or have any understanding of Constitutional Law. The VP actually is in charge of the Senate. From Article I Section III "The Vice President of the United States shall be President of the Senate, but shall have no vote, unless they be equally divided. " Interestingly Joe Biden didn't even know which Article of the Constitution addressed the VP's role in the Senate (he thought it was Article II). And before you use the next point that you read on an email someone sent you, it does not matter that the VP only votes in the case of a tie because that is the only time that the VP's vote would really matter. A vote at any other time wouldn't change anything it would just be siding with the group that would win or lose anyway.

    Kopecky hit on Carle video

He didn't get a penalty for the hit or the refs would have blown the play dead when the Wings touched the puck which they didn't. The penalty was roughing for the scrum afterward.

    The Best of Samuelsson

I guess I misunderstood you as well, I thought that EVA's post was a very cogent and accurate response to your previous post especially the part quoted below: I assumed that the bold part above indicated at least some relevance to his shooting percentage. Especially in light of the fact that you put this part of Eva's post in bold to comment on: "BECAUSE HE'S ON THE F****** POINT, AND HIS SHOTS GET THROUGH TO THE NET MOST OF THE TIME. IF HIS SHOTS WERE MISSING THE NET OR HITTING SHINPADS ALL THE DAMN TIME LIKE EVERYONE LOVES TO CLAIM, HIS SHOOTING PERCENTAGE WOULD BE BETTER." I think that Eva's post is very relevant and gives a good indication of what Sammy does and does not do.

    The Best of Samuelsson

I have never disliked Samuelsson. I think for what he is paid he does quite well. Everyone is in love with Mule right now (and rightfully so) but Sammy had more points last season than Mule did (again I still think that Mule is better I'm just using it as an example to show that Sammy does produce), in fact he was 8th on the team in points but only 14th on the team in TOI per game. He was also 7th in points and 5th in goals for us in the playoffs but 11th in TOI per game. He does have a low shooting percentage and makes the occasional bad play but for the $1.2M that he costs there are not many that would be better and most teams would love to have him at that price.

    Filppula signs 5-Year, $15M contract

Where do you get that Mule is more humble than Hossa? Hossa just turned down $70-80M in order to play for the Wings and will likely play on the second line, it doesn't sound like he is that arrogant.

    Filppula signs 5-Year, $15M contract

Actually, this is not technically correct. Although the cap hit for the year is $3M, Flip's salary is only $2M this year, $2.5M next year and then $3.5 the final three years. Averaged out the cap hit on Flip's contract is more ($3M) but he will only earn $2M this year which is less than what Z will make. This does make it a little different I think that Flip is worth $2M next year which is what he is going to get paid. Hopefully, he will improve and be worth more than $2.5M the year after and worth more than $3.5M for the three years after that. Therefore, to me it looks like he signed for what he is worth this year and hopefully will be a bargain in the final 4 years. I hope so! I know it looks bad and cap-wise still costs $3M next year but that is not the salary that he is getting and that does matter. http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article...048/1048/SPORTS

    Filppula signs 5-Year, $15M contract

I agree that it may not happen and that we shouldn't get our hopes up. I'm just not so sure that Hossa only wants to be here one year and then after a year with a great team and organization will want to go somewhere else for a couple million more each year. If the cap raises over $6M as it has the past two years I think their is a shot (although not probable) that he stays taking a pay cut and a contract roughly matching Z's. I guess to me it is more the fact that I doubt Hossa will want to leave at the end of the year (although the lure of more money will always be appealing). I just think that a guy who turns down the offers that he did may realize that when you make as much money as he does (no matter where he plays) other things may be more important and I don't think Yzerman was making the comments without at least some insight into what Hossa's motive was and what is going on behind the scenes. BUT I agree no need to get our hopes up too much. .

    Filppula signs 5-Year, $15M contract

I don't think that Yzerman would just come out and say this out of no where and I'm pretty sure that I have read somewhere Holland saying that he doesn't know if it will fit but they will be trying to make it fit with Hossa long term. I think there is a shot that Hossa takes a pay cut and a contract about what Z will get. I don't know that it will work but I'm not certain that it won't either, no one thought we would get Hossa this year either.

    Filppula signs 5-Year, $15M contract

Steve Yzerman has a different take on it: "Without even talking to him, my own feeling is, he's signed, he's coming here with the intention that, "I'm gonna play really well, and fit in here, and they're going to want to sign me to a long-term deal," so I don't, and again, I haven't spoken to him with that, but it's just my feeling that, I know he likes the organization, and he likes the way our team plays, but his intention is to come in and win us over, and stay here." http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2008/07/yzerman_on_wdfn.html

    Filppula signs 5-Year, $15M contract

 I fully agree with you and NFM. There is no way that you get a guy to take a hometown discount and then ship him off a month later. Why would anyone including Z or Mule next year agree to take a discount to play with the Wings and still be afraid that they would be sent to play for the Kings or some other team that you don't want to play for and who would have given you a lot more money if you just signed with them in the first place.

    Filppula signs 5-Year, $15M contract

I'm happy with this because I really like Flip and think it has the potential to be a great deal in years to come. My only question is what will this do for Mule's upcoming contract negotiation? I have read many times on TGW that people think he signs for $3-3.5M per year. Do you think that this will up his price as well? [Edit] My point is that people talking about not being able to afford Hossa next year may end up being more because we will have to pay Mule more than was thought before this signing. BUT again I still really like this signing and think there might be a chance we still get to keep Hossa.

    Stop Stanley Cup visits

I agree, the guys are just enjoying the fruits of their victory. Also, Stevie has said that something similar to what happened with Drapes happened once when he had the cup - so I guess Stevie just did it for the media attention - we all know how important it is to him to be in the spotlight. "Stoney: I'm sure that they'll act with more decorum than Draper's daughter... Yzerman: Heh heh, actually, you know, I had an episode like that when my daughter was young, too, so be careful when you drink out of that thing." http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2008/07/yzerman_on_wdfn.html

    What's going on with Val?

It is still not likely to go to arbitration as they keep saying in the news there is already a two year deal in place to fall back on if they can't get a longer deal worked out. "it appears that Holland will attempt to re-sign Filppula to a longer-term deal, with an agreed-upon 2-year deal as his fall-back plan." http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2008/07/fi...ely_to_act.html

    McCarty offered contract

Yeah, Holland, Babcock, MacLean, McLellan, and the rest of those guys are such morons. I can't believe that they don't know who should get contracts, who their best players are, or who should be playing in what games/circumstances. They must all just be so much "man love" love for McCarty that they can't be objective. I can't believe that their love didn't overflow to the point that they put him on the first line or maybe even pulled Ozgood and let him play in goal. I wish we could get some people up there who knew how to put a team together.

Hossa's agent is floored by his client's behaviour

That's funny, that is exactly what I was thinking when I read the article. Nowhere in the article does it say the agent is mad or that Hossa was stupid for what he did, in fact it didn't seem like the agent was mad about it at all but rather enjoyed it. I know the agent lost a lot of money but perhaps he really enjoyed have a client who cared about more than just getting as much money as possible no matter what. Maybe he was mad but I don't think you can get that from the article, it is crazy that Hossa turned down the contracts he was offered and most of (if not all of) the people here were totally floored that Hossa turned down those offers to play for one year in Detroit. It is shocking but that doesn't make Hossa's agent a jerk it just makes him surprised - like everyone else.
