    Bettman stands by his officials

So instead of the credibilty of one referee on one call being questioned (which I still say isn't true anyway, no one thinks or expects that the refs get it right every time - that would be impossible - he missed the call big deal) the entire rule has to mean something it doesn't mean just so it appears that our refs are perfect. It matters Bettman saying that it was the wrong call because it would be honest, it shows greater support for the rules and the refs to say yep the call was missed, its a game and thats how it goes, our refs are are the best in the world and get it right most of the time and when a call is missed, which will sometimes happen, that too is part of the game and both teams need to continue to play knowing that the calls made as best we can and they are part of hockey. That would have accomplished several things: 1) allowed Mr. Bettman to be honest and truthful about the rule; 2) showed respect for the rules of the game; 3) taken away most of the controversy over the call because they acknowledged that it wasn't the correct call but told the players to deal with the breaks of the game; 4) allowed players to understand and be better able to comply with the rules rather than wonder if the rule means what is written or if it can randomly mean whatever that particular ref wants it to mean at any given moment; and finally 5) it would have shown that we have a game of people who are man enough to own up to mistakes that they make instead of the ref giving a totally absurd explanation that no one belives and then having it backed up by the Commissioner when everyone (even those defending his actions) think that he was dishonest about the call but "had to" in order to save face and support his refs. I will never understand why anyone should lie about a call just so that the refs feel supported. They make a lot of money to make the calls and they overall do a great job, so they blew it, who cares, man up admit the mistake and move on its not a big deal but the dishonesty bothers me.

    Bettman stands by his officials

Again I think he can stand by his officials (stating they are the best in the world) without calling red blue just because the ref accidentally called it blue. Thats just a silly thing for him to do.

    Bettman stands by his officials

I agree with your statement but not its application. Bettman should stand by the refs but that doesn't mean that he should lie about whether or not a particular call was correct. That does no one, not the league, the players, the refs, or the fans any good. He should stand by his refs by saying that it is a fast paced game, they are the best in the world at their jobs, and that no matter no one will ever get every play right every single time in every single game. The call was wrong and I have not heard anyone but Bettman and the Stars organization say that it was the right call. In my opinion it is just stupid to say that it was the right call when it is obvious that it was the wrong call. Standing by the refs doesn't mean bastardizing the rules to where they no longer matter. If Bettman is right then next time the ref should make the same call and fans, players, refs, and everyone else should expect the call to be made in the future and should be mad if it is not. That is not good for hockey - no one wants this to be the rule but Bettman basically said that in the future that it should be called. Also, I don't think that people don't remember the missed calls if their team wins 5-2 its that the game wasn't lost because of a missed call so the effect is not the same.

WCF Game 1 GDT: Red Wings 4, Stars 1

While we did score 3 of our 4 goals on the power play we controlled the game most of the time and that is a big part of the reason why they took penalties. We took it to them througout and that is why we got power plays and got goals off of them. If you take out the last 2 power plays (which were in the last minute of the game and didn't matter) we had 5 power plays and scored on 3 that is incredible and most games we should get at least 3 or 4 power plays - especially with the way we control the puck. It may be a long series but we greatly outplayed them tonight and the guys really deserve credit for the way that they played.

THATS RIGHT! We have so many awards and players and coach up for so many awards, tons of wins, and still we're just lucky? Give me a break.

Thats what I was think - very ironic that Dallas has a problem with someone being in the crease.

WCF Game 1 GDT: Red Wings 4, Stars 1

I think he was being sarcastic. That is what the rolled eyes meant.
  9. He picked the Wings in 7 but strangely has the key matchup of Ribeiro and Kronvall "Mike Ribeiro vs. Niklas Kronwall: Mike Ribeiro remains the Stars' most dangerous forward and leads the team with 14 points in 12 games. He can expect to spend a lot of time making sure he's not getting his head handed to him by Detroit defenseman Niklas Kronwall, who is making the most of his first playoff run with the Wings. The injury-prone Swede has good offensive tools, is strong in his own zone and has the added bonus of being able to deliver the big open-ice hit. The Stars need Ribeiro's continued offensive production, while the Wings need Kronwall to shut him down." http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/playoffs2008...&id=3382153 Since Ribeiro is on the first line with Morrow and Lehtinen I would think that they would be against Lids and Raf most of the night not Kronvall.

    Stuart eying long-term deal

I think they may be splitting up Lids/Raf and Kronner/Stewart to get the benefit of the two of them on different lines and that will help Stewart with his decision making and should make it really hard for Dallas. I think it will reap benefits in this series and if Stewart signs will help long term as well.

Any specific reason WHY it would be a huge mistake?

    Stuart eying long-term deal

It seems that Stuart might be willing to take less than he could get on the free market in order to play with the Wings where he can win. According to the Edmonton Journal: While financial considerations will play a role in any negotiation, Stuart said the price of happiness isn't always tied to money. The native of Rocky Mountain House, Alta., has had his fill of losing since entering the NHL with San Jose and L.A. "Winning definitely comes into play," the 28-year-old Stuart said. "Being on a losing team is not that much fun no matter what you're being paid. Coming to the rink, to a winning environment and a positive atmosphere is definitely worth something. "Those things are going to be something I think more about after we're done (the season)." http://www.canada.com/edmontonjournal/news...d47&k=73178 I loved this trade when it happened and would love it even more if they could lock Stuart up for 4 years within budget.

    Hello from Dallas

Welcome aboard! Here is to having a good series with the best team coming out and continuing on to win the Cup.

    Melrose picks the Wings

Well Melrose only got 50% right in each of the first two rounds so I guess that means either us or the Penguins won't make it to the finals, too bad for the Penguins. Just kidding I think even Melrose got these right.

Burnside breaks down the WCF and picks the Wings in 7

For me it is not about the numbers its about the total way that he plays - he is one of those guys that has talent and plays heart and soul every game. I love watching him play and would love to have him in a Wings jersey (even though it won't happen because Dallas knows his value as well).

    Finding the Right Balance

I think that they can be taught enough toughness if they can be surrounded by other guys who have that toughness. I think that is one of the areas that guys like Kronvall, Mule, Homer, Downey, Drake, and especially Chelios help. To me it doesn't have to be the ability to hit and take hits exactly it is the ability to thrive through adversity of which Chelios is one of the models. Yzerman was never overly physical but I don't know that I have ever seen anyone tougher than he was. It is the ability to make the right play even though you know that you are going to get hit, or the willingness to block a shot you know is going to hurt and then get back up time and time again. That is why I think guys like Downey and Drake help this team as well (even if they are not on the ice). Those guys really help guys like Dats and Z to have the snarl that helps their game and when they see those guys take up and defend them I think it helps them to feel more obliged to do the same for those guys.

    Is Sidney Crosby a diver?

I agree I think that Crosby embellishes, which is a form of a dive, sometimes but so do most players. One portion of the problem is that if often times things that are actual ligitimate penaltys will not be called unless the player really embelishes the infraction. All the time you hear commentators say "they had to call that one because it stopped a 2 on 1" or something like that where it is a slight hook or interference but if the play just loses momentum (which often takes him out of the play or at least behind the rush) there is no call unless the player falls. Samething happens with crosschecks and high sticks. If Homer gets cross checked while in front of the net it often may happen 2 or 3 times but no penalty is called until he is knocked to the ground - similarly if a player gets high stick but it is not very hard it sometimes is not called but if the player throws off his gloves while falling to the ice and grabs his face there is a strong shot that it gets called. I am not saying that players are only diving/embellishing because they won't ever get calls when there is a ligitimate penalties but it seems to happen too often that they don't get called. It seems to me fairly often that the defense should get penalties against players like Dats but until he falls or almost falls no call is made. Therefore, I think that there needs to be a crack down on both the players and the refs. Any time that the ref thinks that there is a dive is should call a penalty (which they don't) and every time that the ref sees a penalty they should call it (which the don't).

    Morrow Blows Up Michalek

I don't think anyone here is wanting them hurt but everyone loves a big hit and love players that can lay one on a guy. I do agree about the guy with the phone though, if you noticed he was trying to take pictures while Michalek was still face down on the ice and not moving. There are always jerks like that but most fans aren't and when Michalek got up most of the fans at the game clapped for him and that was in Dallas again showing the injury is not what fans want but only the hard work, sacrificing the body for the play, and making the other team think twice about having the puck, looking down, or holding it too long to make a play. P.S. Welcome to the forum - good luck to Dallas in the next round - lets have a good series and then the Wings can go on to beat whomever comes out of the East.

    Morrow Blows Up Michalek

They showed him leaving the game and his arm was in a sling but he was walking just fine. I haven't heard what exactly the injury was though. When the hit happened Michalek stayed face down a long time, I thought he might be hurt really bad so it was good to see him walking around.
