He was trying to block Marty's line of sight. Also distracting him, so he put the stick in front of his eyes. It can be a smart play, but 1) you can't see the play behind you so you could be blocking your own team's shot 2) if you aren't judging your stick right, you could hit him in the mask and get a high stick penalty
