  1. Ok guys,

You must realize that any city will appear to have a decent fan base when their team is winning. It is the support the team receives when they are less competitive that is important.

As for expanding the league, not to be mean but that is the worse idea ever presented to fix the NHL. The league is already VERY diluted. There are 3 or 4 players on most of the rosters that shouldnt even be in the league, if we expanded that number would rise. Contract AT LEAST 4 teams and the level of play will rise which should make for a more exciting product. Also, we need to realize the game is what it is. It will never be as popular as football or baseball. If this means more teams should be in Canada, so be it.

The only teams that should not be contracted or relocated are as follows.

    New Jersey Devils

    New York Islanders

    New York Rangers

    Philadelphia Flyers

    Boston Bruins

    Buffalo Sabres

    Montreal Canadians

    Ottawa Senators

    Toronto Maple Leafs

    Chicago Blackhawks

    Detroit Red Wings

    St. Louis Blues

    Calgary Flames

    Colorado Avalanche

    Edmonton Oilers

    Minnesota Wild

    Vancouver Canucks

And no i did not leave anyone off that list. A case could be made for the 13 other teams in the nhl to be contracted or relocated.

  3. okay redwinguofmfan, i was with ya on lilja being solid minus one mistake until the he was better than lidstrom comment. This makes me question your hockey knowledge.

However what people dont understand about Bertuzzi is that this guy was around 60% and he hasnt played in three seasons. Never in his stay with us was he healthy or did he have his legs under him, and he was still productive. Give this guy an offseason to get healthy and a training camp to get in shape. Trust me, all he has to do is get to within a shadow of himself pre/steve moore incident and he will be dominant for us. He is the perfect nasty/gritty player we have always wanted/needed. Why give him up? We need guys like Bertuzzi to create space/protect guys like Zet, Dats, Filp. Like we saw the past 3 cup runs, you cant win without grit. This season we had grit and boom, we go to the WCFs.

  4. As long as a few things fall into place, i truly believe the wings will be the team to beat next season. First and foremost, it is a MUST to re-sign Todd Bertuzzi. It boggles my mind as to why people bash this guy. It would surprise me if he was above 70% in his entire stay as a red wing. Additionally, the guy hasnt played in 3 frigging seasons. Any argument made against this guy is out of complete and utter ignorance and i have to question if you have any real hockey knowledge. Just wait and watch a healthy Bertuzzi in the winged wheel. You guys will be salivating next year.

The second thing that has to happen goal tending. I dont think Howard is ready to carry the load, and i doubt if Hasek can stay healthy in two consecutive seasons. This is an area we may have to get lucky.

I really think a healthy trio of Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and Bertuzzi would make up the best forwards in the league. Especially with key producers such as Homer, Cleary and an improved Filpulla supporting them.

  5. We all know that the development of players in the Red Wings organization has been far superior to the majority of teams in the NHL despite where we generally pick in the draft.

Henrik Zetterberg, Pavel Datsyuk, Tomas Kopecky, Johan Franzen, Nick Kronwall, Jiri Fischer, Brett Lebda, Dan Cleary(i know we ddint draft him), Andreas Lilja(i know, hes played solid, Valterri Fipulla, Jiri Hudler,...

Can this be due to utter brilliance in scouting, or do you guys think there is a direct corelation to the development of our prospects with the likes of playing along side the Lidstroms, Chelios, Yzerman, Shanahan, Hull, Robitaille, Schneiders of the world?

  6. The consensus on this board is that everyone wants to do away with the shootout. However everyone on this board is a die hard hockey fan. Unfortunately there aren't enough of you die hard hockey fans out there or else our hockey games wouldnt be on OLN for crying out loud.

What im trying to say is the average guy(non hockey fan) enjoys shootouts. I go to college at Western Michigan and barely anyone watches hockey, which is sad because this is supposed to be "hockeytown." But whenever a shootout comes on everyone seems to get excited and gather around the TV.

So in my opinion shootouts are a necessary evil because it is one of the only things inn hockey average guys(non hockey fans) like about hockey.

  7. 97 was 10x bettter.

Yzerman and Fedorov in there primes were twice the players Zetterberg and Datsyuk are.

Shanny and Bertuzzi are about even imo

I agree with Shanny and Bertuzzi being even thing. Although I think Zetterberg and Datsyuk may be closer to Feds and Stevie then we think. I just think Zetterberg, and Datsyuk havent even reached their full potential yet. These two guys could be top 10 players in this league, if they arent already.

Another point is the 97 team had a pretty damn good 4th offensive option in Slava Kozlov. This team doesnt have anyone close to him. Maybe Hudler, Grigorenko, or Filiplulla can step up.

  8. With the exception of our 2002 SC when we we had Shanny, Hull, Robitaille, Yzerman, and Fedorov up front, our runs from 97-01 was powered by Steve Yzerman, Sergei Federov, and Brendan Shanahan up front. These three were the guys that led us to our 97 and 98 cups.

My question to you all is this. If Bertuzzi comes back next year and can return to form as the best power forward in the game, which three players are the better nucleus for a team.

Todd Bertuzzi, Pavel Datsyuk, and Henrik Zetterberg

    or

Brendan Shanahan, Sergei Fedorov, and Steve Yzerman

    --------------------

My opinion, the edge goes to the 97-98 wings. Sergei in my opinion was the best player in the game back then, Shanny was a dominant powerforward, and of course Yzerman is Yzerman.

  9. Has Pavel grown as a hockey player this season. Every game he makes me wonder how the hell he does some of the things he does with the puck, and i dont remember him playing like this in the past. His vision/confidence just seems much better than one year ago..

  10. I'm all for replacing Samuelsson for a grittier player, however, Langfield or Ellis isnt the solution.

I completely agree that Samuelsson is vastly overrated, and i have no idea what babcock sees in the guy. I know people will talk about his point production, but lets be realistic he has to be one of the softest players in the league and is incredibly easy to play against. In the playoffs that just isnt going to work.

an ideal forward playoff lineup would look like t his

    Zetterberg- Datsyuk-Bertuzzi

    Calder-Lang-Franzen (line has been working

    Holmstrom-Hudler-Filpulla

    Maltby-Draper-Cleary

    Samuelsson

  11. The key word is WAS. Fedorov WAS a part of the Wings and three Cups.

Fans booing him is totally deserved. He's part of the opposition NOW.

In addition he left the Wings organization like a petulant child.

agreed... for all those who think it's classless that we boo, quit being up tight and get a sense of humor. you guys take yourselves too seriously.

in addition fedorov left because he thought he needed the spotlight, more ice time. etc. but he found out quickly that he couldnt carry a team and started losing. he started missing the playoffs and recieved less ice time.

its justified that we remind him of this everytime he comes to JLA.

  12. I look at the Kindl situation differently. I think he would grow a lot more as a player by playing ona line with Chelios, than he would playing a year in the AHL.

Chelios may only have 1 year left. I say let him groom Kindl just as he did with Fisch, and Lebda

  13. i agree, it did suck seeing stevie retire without a cup, but i really didnt think the 05-06 team had what it takes to win anyways. the reason 98-99, 02-03 really stung for me was because i thought those two squads were hands down the best teams in the NHL. ANd i thought they were heavy favorites in their respective years.

99-00, and 00-01 i didnt like our chances because of the goaltending, and the last 2 seasons i thought we were too soft.

  14. Everyone on here probably knows we have won 3 stanley cups in the past 10 years. My question to you guys is what red wings team/season left you with a bitter taste in your mouth. Although i realize any season the wings finish without winning the cup leaves a sour taste, but what seasons especially should we have won but didnt.

Only two come to my mind

1998-99 - Coming off back to back Stanley Cup championships. We acquired Chris Chelios, Wendel Clark, Ulf Samuelson, and Bill Ranford at the deadline. I really thought that would give us enough of a boost put us over the hump.

2002-03 - Only difference from the year before was no Hasek. I know that is a big loss, but we gained Curtis Joseph, Mathieu Schneider, and Henrik Zetterberg.

  15. Again with the "trade schneider" talk...please. None of our supposed "good, young defense prospects" who are all supposedly better than Schneider have proven anything, in particular Kronwall, who has been incredibly inconsistent the past few months.

...but you're right...let's dump our second best defenseman, 48 points and +/- 11 is pretty weak, besides we've got Lilja and Kronwall on the job. ^^

Honestly, I'm open to realistic ideas, but saying we'll just bring up some guys from Grand Rapids to replace him is not giving him enough credit.

In my opinion the wings would be better off signing a Scott Hartnell, who is 24 years old with the schneider money. Our defense will be able to survive without Schneider, while our forwards, even with Bertuzzi, and Calder are still a little weak to make a long post season run.

Take a look at the teams that have come out of the west the past 3 seasons. All Edmonton had was Pronger, Anaheim didnt have much on defense and neither did Calgary. What those 3 teams did have on defense, however was defensive defensemen.

We could survive with somehting like Lidstrom, Kronwall, Lebda, Sarich, Chelios, Quincey

  16. I was looking at probies wikipedia page and something shocked me. His 3rd season, 1987-88 he had 29 goals 33 assists, which was 3rd on the team in points. He went to the all star game and led the team in points during the post season..

What the hell happened after this season?? LOl

  17. swedelundin, it really is nice that you like everyone currently on the red wings roster and want to resign everyone, unfortunately the nhl has a salary cap. The wings cant afford to resign bertuzzi, datsyuk, maltby, schneider, calder, and lang.

rick zombo, you are absolutely correct about schneider. ill take a cory sarich or vitally vishnevsky, who are both free agents, in the playoffs over schneider any day.

  18. Tomas Holmstrom 2.25 Pavel Datsyuk 5 Henrik Zetterberg 2.65

Kyle Calder 2.2 Valtteri Filppula .71 Todd Bertuzzi 5

Scott Hartnell 3 Kris Draper 2.128 Johan Franzen .941666

Igor Grigorenko 1 Jiri Hudler .7 Dan Clearly .6625

Mikael Samuelsson 1.2 Tomas Kopecky .75

Nick Lidstrom 7.6 Danny Markov 2.5

Nick Kronwall 3 Brett Lebda .65

Andreas Lilja 1 Chris Chelios .85

    Kyle Quincey .5

    Chris Osgood .85

    Jimmy Howard .75

    45.9

if we re-sign datsyuk, bertuzzi, and calder witch i believe are absolute musts, we dont have the cap room to reup with schnieder or lang.

i say get hartnell in here to replace maltby. resign markov instead of schneider because he is physical. or sign cory sarich instead of markov and schneider
