That's initially what I had suggested in a thread a few weeks back, but I had a number of people tell me that it either didn't make any sense or it would be too hard for the league to implement. I don't know why, but that's what they felt. Personally, I DO think it should be that way, whether the league abandons the shootout and returns to the tie or if they keep the shootout, but that's just me.

Good post. I hate shootouts. No really, I do. They should be reserved for the All-Star Game Skills Competition and nothing else. That being said, I can't see the NHL doing away with them so if they're going to be around, like you say I'd like to see it taken to best of 5. I do not however, think you should reuse shooters. I'd like to see this instituted, myself. As someone else pointed out, it makes no sense to have to go chase down a puck especially if you're the closest person on your team to it and you're at the other end of the ice. Complete agreement here. I have stated here before that I think no points should be awarded if you lose the game, regardless of when but if the league won't abolish the shootout and go back to win-loss-tie, then I would be behind something similar to what you suggested. I have no real take on this, because I don't know how going from smaller to larger rinks or vice versa affects the style of play. Maybe I haven't watched enough international competition to see if there's a distinct difference between the way they play there and the way they play on the regulation-sized rinks.
