Johan Franzen signs extension, 11 years

exactly not!! he signed a 11 year deal, being paid for the first seven years more than 5mil!!!!! then the decreased value for the followings years is just normal and also a big risk for the organization.

Johan Franzen signs extension, 11 years

As i said you mix the notion of cap hit and salary. If Holland did a such deal, it s because he had reasons to think that Franzen won t play until the end of his contract and retire before. (main reason: his age..) So there are good chances he won t play and won t be paid for the last(s) years of his contract. But for sure he will be paid for the 7 next years more than 5 mil. So i ask again: where is the discount? I could say it differently: ok sources says on the open market he is worth 5.5 mil. But for how many years? for a 3 years contract? Do someone really think he would have received a 5.5 million for 7 friggings years? This deal is very surprising from KH...

You re in a misinterpretation. To trick the cap hit with a long term deal is good, but it s not equal to a discount. Clearly by seeing these numbers we can figure out that he will be paid for every year what he will be supposedly worth. And i don't see a disccount for any of these years (especially in 6 years, still getting paid 5 mil)... We re supposedly the best team of the NHL, and in order to remain it, we need in this cap world today to have great deals. Lots of players wants to play fo the best team and so to take a paycut. But i do think that it will be difficult to remain the best with deals like franzen or filpulla's one... May be i'm mistaken, but i just have the feeling these players didn't take a paycut enough..

These numbers are very interesting. Holland said he could have get 5.5 in the open market and here you can see Franzen take more than 5 million per year during.......... 7 years!!!! Can anyone tell me where is the frigging discount here??? Plus we give him extra years which are a grest insurance for him... Sorry but this deal is in the filpulla's one range: medium to bad one (and for sure not great)

    Mule close to signing

imagine this scenario, just for fun we sign Franz to a 3.5 longterm deal we sign Hossa to a 6 mil longterm deal we trade kronner, stuart and Fil for number 2 pic: Hedman we sign Bouwmeester at around 5/y in free agency we receive 2 picks for Hudler rights we let go Lebda and Chelios HAHAHA wouldn t it be the best possible scenario? (no idea if it would fit in the cap space but anyway at the first sight it would be close to)

    Mike Green scores......AGAIN!

I was a fan of hockey in the late 80's and i want to tell you it s hard to say.. Their hockey style are different and Lidstrom's play and quality is for sure harder to see at the first glance than Cheli's play at the time (which was spectacular) . Cheli was much more hyped than Lids now that s for sure. Just for the anecdote, i even had the pleasure to see Chelios' play in person in Switzerland as he came at the beginning of the 90' s, when once half of a season was cancelled.

    Ken Holland 1on1 @ tsn.ca

If he doesn't improve, will really KH take the risk to go with him/this tandem? I don't think so.. The organisation WANT the cup this year especially because they know we won't have a such good team for a while. Will Roloson be the only option available? What about Rinne? Bryzgalov? Smith? Hedberg and Lehtonen?

    The goaltending deficit in Detroit

Osgood's play has been sooo brutal. One soft goal again yesterday. He averages one or two per night. I think one of the best think for the RW would be that Osgood go on to play like this: It would leave no other option to KH than to aquire a goaltender at the deadline. In the other hand if Osgood's play increase but just a little bit to become less than average-average, this could bite us back in the longterm and not be enough to go far this spring.. There is still the option his play become really better, but i don't think it would come by magic in spring..

    Leino's first game

I was asking me the same questions! Particulary about Abdelkader ..

    Martin Gerber on waivers

Well i havent seen him play this season... But what i can see is that his stats are quite honest with a bad defense in front of him.. 90%SA and 2.86GAA . So is he so bad that some of you here think? I doubt it! It s funny cuz there is so much people here defending Ozzie poor's stats, and these same people are so hard against other goalies, who have better stats than him..

Who is actually tradeable on this Roster?

I agree that for now they don t play worth their contract for this year. Stuart is clearly the most expendable of the 4. Rafalski, don t think about it. Filpulla and Kronner have grown up here. Kronner has been really good during last year run and Filpulla show flash of brilliance sometimes..
  19. swiss_fan

Who is actually tradeable on this Roster?

Stuart has only an NTC for the last 2 years of his contract, so he is TRADEABLE +considering our logjam on defense, and the fact that he is our only expendable defenseman that has a big salary (Lids, Rafs, and Kronner won t go anywhere) i think there is a possibility he could be gone at the draft...

Helm, Meech, and All Other Young Red Wings

Personally i think Meech should play more. C'mon we all know what Kopecky and Maltby can bring us... Giving Meech a real chance (not like now, to play 1 game out of 5..) by really rotating theses guys is... required i think. Everytime i saw him on the ice i was nicely surprised.

    Keeping this roster intact

No there is also Stuart, and i wouldn t be surprised if he would be traded at the end of the year, having then a NTC. Obviously we have too much people and too much dollars tied up in D. The question is who will be moved for Kindl and Ericcson. Lebda? I don t think so, but even with him, then? Lilja? too cheap to be moved with the level of his performances..
  22. Sometimes, people should really think about what they are writing, before to write it...

    Drapers line

I think without a doubt that Babcock realize that the 4th sucks royally. Obviously there is the cap problem which explain that we don t bring up Helm (even if this one seems recently to struggle in GR), BUT i m quite sure it s also part of the plan, and it will be much more beneficial on the psychological side to bring GR guys only when playoff will come or soon time before. It will push the guys and insert a new dynamic like last year with the "black aces"
  24. swiss_fan

    Drapers line

For me people are too rough with Kopecky. Anyway we all know what will happen with him: he will be scratched comes playoff time, and his future with the wings depend largely of the extension or not of Hossa ' stay. About Draper: "Oh my god" is all i have to say! Is it the year of too much?what a slump! like some have said previously he almost had only one good night. And yesterday: Even with all his history with the wings i can t imagine having him in the lineup FOR 2 MORE YEARS with his current level of play. And i disagree with what some have said: it s not Draper's faceoff habiliy who keep him in the lineup, it s just the way of this organization work: dedication and loyalty. Personally i don t understand why a coach in NA is so reluctant to bench a player with poor performance during 2-3 games, especially with a season as long as the NHL.
