Perhaps someone has already asked this, but doesn't this put the Wings in a bit of a tight spot with regards to Filpula? I could easily see someone offering him an offer sheet around 3-4 mil and putting the Wings in a bad spot. What am I missing? No one seems all that concerned.

Conn Smythe!

Game 5, 2007 Western Conference Finals vs. Anaheim Ducks. Lilja coughs it up to Selanne right in front of the net in overtime, costing the Wings the game and ultimately the series. If that's not evidence, I'm not sure what is, with all due respect.

There's a great feeling about this playoff year. With series against Colorado and Dallas, its just like old times. Let the good times roll - Wings in 6!

Coming from someone else who lives in MD, its exciting to see hockey get some play on the radio and the local papers. There's some wonderful pockets of hockey in this state, and let's hope that Ovechkin and the Caps can increase the popularity of the game around here. As for all the Caps talk on this board - I'd like to think that Wings fans are hockey fans first. The Caps have been a great story and have played great hockey - why not talk em up?
-
So is anyone still interested in contracting the Caps?

Just wanted to float something out there - "The Fourth Period" is reporting that the Islanders are taking offers for Satan, Fedotenko, and Comrie. http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/nyi080225.html Any of these guys strike you as worthwhile additions? I've always like Fedotenko - he's always struck me as a Dan Cleary-type, and let's not forget he played a big role in Tampa's Cup run. Just thinking out loud.
-
Not if they play Washington in the first round! Anyway, a lot can happen. We'll have a better picture after the game on Feb. 10. Furthermore, who knows what the trade deadline, or injuries, will bring. This kind of talk is useless.

Look, the Wings were the best team in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Had they been able to stay healthy, the Wings would have won the Cup. If the Wings had the roster we have now (with Rafalski) in the series against the Ducks, they'd have won. So yeah, the Wings haven't gotten a lot of new players, but that's because they don't have to. No reason to panic.

How much worse could NBC's coverage have been? Cutting away twice during the celebrations? That's ridiculous. Not nearly as ridiculous, however, as the Ducks winning the Cup. This just feels all wrong. Except for Teemu, there's nothing good coming out of this at all.

You know you're a Detroit Red Wings fan if...

Someone's last name starting with a "Yz" doesn't seem odd. -
I'd like to have Jiri Fischer back...

WCF Post-GAME 5 (5/20): Ducks 2, Red Wings 1 (OT)
FirstSamuel1745 replied to Matt's topic in General
You know, I said to my wife after the second period, "If you want to win the Cup, you have to win games like this." And they were doing it - the beginning of the third period was the most entertaining hockey I've seen in a long time. But some iffy calls, an awful turnover, and the Wings are down. They didn't win the kind of game they needed to, and I'm having a hard time being optimistic from here on out. -
First question to ask someone if you want to know if they are a hockey fan or not - Do you watch the NHL Playoffs? If they respond in the affirmative, you know they aren't real fans. There is no such thing as the NHL Playoffs. There is, however, the Stanley Cup Playoffs. With that said, would you all ever want hockey to get as big as the MLB or NFL?
-
The only thing to take away from this game is that this whole series, just like every other series in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, comes down to the goaltenders. This series is all about Dominik Hasek. If he plays well, they win. If he doesn't, they lose.

Assuming Bertuzzi's game gets better (and there's no reason to think it won't), he is certainly an upgrade over Lang. If we can only keep one, I'm all for keeping Bert.
-
Has a team with Chris Pronger on it ever beaten the Red Wings in the playoffs? I"m doing my best to think back, and I can't come up with anything.
-
So what are the chances we can get all four "experts" on ESPN to pick against the Red Wings again this round?

Yeah, I still think the Sharks are the better team (game 5 notwithstanding). The Wings' experience has helped, but there have been enough good bounces have gone the Red Wings' way. That's part of playoff hockey.
-
E.J. Hradek is making the point over on ESPN that Bertuzzi isn't doing anything. Quite frankly, its a bold move to sit him, but perhaps its the kind of move that will get the team fired up. No doubt Homer's presence has been missed in front of the net - isn't that what Bertuzzi's supposed to be doing? I'm of the opinion to sit Bertuzzi.
-
Look, even though the Wings are still in it, they haven't taken control of the game...there wasn't any time in that first period when I thought they were the better team. So I'm not feeling great, at least not yet...

Now we go boys...now we go....

What about now?

If they lose tonight, can we pleeeeeeeeease panic? Please please please?!?!?!?
