O'Hallaran - Default call is 'interference'?
Graybeard replied to SouthernWingsFan's topic in General
Haha, the Johny Cochran of hockey. -
McCarty's only real role on the team is to fill seats. It's the SCF and the seats are going to full anyway so let Maltby get out there and shut those kids down.

The key word here is interpret. Throw that garbage out. There is no interpretation, just call as the rule is written. You sound like a liberal judge explaining why he just trashed the Constitution again. -
He's still whining. By the way he talks he's lacking enough mental toughness for this game. He doesn't like playing left point so that makes his defense and the rest of his game bad? Sid needs to pass one of his pacifiers over to this boy. After all the talk about these young studs were going to skate our old men into the ground. What a joke. His mommy needs to go into the locker room and slap him in the head. Practices are long? Haven't they been long since you were like 8 yrs old? It's time to get over yourself and step up for your team.

I think that you may have hit on the real issue. Dats was a no show in the playoffs for several seasons. As much as the Pens fans would like to believe otherwise, experience does mean something.

Listen to yourself. I understand your sticking to your opinion but your argument has went from wrong to laughable. Read the rules again. If Homer "tapped" his pad and fooled him into thinking that was the puck, so what. That's some smart hockey and not the type of interference called out in the rulebook. Confusing a young inexperienced goaltender with a little touch of the stick is not the same as physically stopping him or interfering with his ability to play. Who cares what Fleury was reacting to or was thinking when he sat on Homer's stick? If you start putting nonsense in the rulebook like this (because it's not there now) for now on everyone on the ice has to stop moving before a shot can be taken because this might interfere with the goalie by distracting them. This isn't basketball and the goalies are protected enough. To now say that not only do you have to give them the space to make their play but also that you cannot do anything that may distract them into letting the puck go by is insane. There is no way this call is made on anyone else in the league, even by this obviously incompetent official. -

Too bad he couldn't tell that dumbass reporter who kept pressing him what he really thought. If he did they would have slapped him with some chickens*** fine. Heaven forbid someone mention what an incompetent hack they have in a striped shirt.

I honestly hope they can regroup and come back better. I love a good blowout as much as the next guy but this was billed as an epic matchup between two great teams and I'd like to see some of that.

It's the fact that they play in a conference with universally weak defense. Out of that pool of non defensive teams they managed to play three teams that either had crap defense to start with or who's defense was either playing injured or not playing at all. Somehow scoring on a bunch of broken teams equates to dominating (with 5 goals) a healthy defense that is #1 in the league backed up by the #1 defensive forwards in the league. Obviously the logic is flawed but going by a good share of the comments from their fans about how stellar their guys are on defense, I don't think they've watched a western conference game this decade. How many times this year has anyone scored 5 or more goals on the wings? You can say it's the defense in front of him, or it's the goalie I don't really care but you just need to take a look at the GAA to see that this is a pipe dream. -
It'll take more than just the lead to make it happen. Probably right after we chase Fleury out of the net.

Malone wants players to "get their elbows and sticks up"
Graybeard replied to tazzer82's topic in General
Shhhh. Keep a lid on it. So far the fact that our hitting game is greatly improved and still under the radar and underrated has been to our advantage. We heavily outhit a Dallas team that was supposed to push us around. In my opinion it's not Kron they should really be looking out for it's Drake. Kron's open ice hits are great but it's the bonecrushing hits along the boards that Drake has been delivering that are leaving guys wondering what day it is. -
I think you nailed it. What bothers me about Sammy much more than the fact that he seems to have lost any shooting skill he once had, is his lack of puck handling skills. He may not be the worst in the league but the fact that he's on the best puck handling team in the league really makes you notice the lack. Look at our Dallas series. Sammy coughed up the puck at the both blue lines. He may be sound defensively and a good forechecker but on the other end of it he simply blows. All it takes is a little pressure from the opposing forecheckers along the boards and you can count on him to cough up the puck. Missing shots sucks, but at least that doesn't put you in danger like his turnovers at the blue lines do.
-
Pressure Sammy at either blue line and he's likely to cough it up to you. Piss Chelios off and he'll take a shot at someone and give you a PP. Win your share of face-offs so that the Wings don't control the puck and dominate shots on goal. (good luck with that) Your goalie needs to put his leg between Homers than fall over backwards to draw the interference penalty (worked well for Turco) After every goal your netminder must jump up and down and call interference, eventually they'll call one of our goals back for you (worked for Turco as well) No risky passes. Especially when Hand and Dats are on the ice. They have a 6th sense for them and will be headed down the ice with the puck before you know what happened. Crosscheck Homer when he's in the crease to stop his screen. Happens constantly and because of his reputation almost never gets called. Time your checks well, especially with Dats. More often than not he just sidesteps them and you guy will end up plowing one of his own or go facefirst into the boards and injure himself. Play as physcial as you can without throwing yourself out of postion. We struggle more with physical teams than we do wht skilled ones. But honesly, your only real chance of beating the Wings is to find yourself a Stinger missile and shoot down their plane.

Dispelling some myths: the Pittsburgh Penguins

What do you want us to do? Mostly Z and D's defensive play gets brought up because a lot of Pens fans are blathering about how great their forwards play defensively and want to compare them. This is nonsense. There really is no comparison. What would your reaction be if we came over to your house and said that Hank and Dats were every bit as good as pure goal scoring forwards as Crosby and Malkin? You would be up in arms, and rightfully so. These guys are all great players but not for exactly the same reasons. You can't claim that your guys our much better pure goal scorers (which they are), but then turn around and try to say that your guys are any where near as good defensively as our top guys (they just aren't). Now lets compare the Hart trophy to the Selke. Both are some nice hardware but I don't think they are equally telling when it comes to winning cups. One coach has brought both of our teams to the cup. Ask him which trophy winner he would rather have on his team. He preached defense first from top to bottom and you might say he was pretty damn successful with that philosophy. He took Mario and made him a better player (and cup winner) by elevating his two way game and turned around and did the same thing for Stevie Y. Because of the success with his system the guy has more jewelry than a gypsy woman. We still play that kind of hockey. History is on our side and it's the Penguins who have everything to prove in this series. -

I don't know about stealing or not stealing games other than the fact that we don't ask our netminders to steal games. If we have to ask it, then we consider it a failure on the part of our defense. -

Well we played without our defense for a while when they were injured. Also, we have to be careful not to just go and win all the games. They already put a salary cap on the league to try and break our dynasty, not being smart enough to realize it's our scouting that really keeps our team great. We are afraid of what other damage Bettman might inflict on the NHL trying to stop us if we push too hard. -

I love the part where he says the Pens will get the puck one way or the other. Please tell us how? We'll win the face offs handily and your players +/- averages are abysmal compared to ours. And somehow you'll just magically get the puck. You may wish you could blow off an important part of the game just because your team doesn't compare in the category, but it's now that easy. -
You're fighting a losing battle dude. The makers of these lists in general have a hardon for pure goal scorers. We all know that cups are decided by defense. D and Z will never get their due (even from a lot of Wings fans)and you'll just be called a homer by people with dreams of flashing red lights in their heads. If I had to pick any two players to lead a team to the cup, right here right now, throwing out all thoughts about future potential and all that, Z and D are the top picks to take you there hands down. Z is tied in scoring with Crosby and in every other aspect of the game he is just on a whole different lvl. Malkin is a scoring machine, but once again, Dats is right up there and beats him in every other aspect. It's all based on your own opinion but I think that anyone who pushes these two guys down the list because someone else has a few more goals than them is thinking one dimensionally. It seems funny that someone would have a complaint about the top three on a guys list being all Wings. You think maybe there's a reason we've been the dominant team in the league for almost two decades now? Come to think of it though. I'm glad they are overlooked so much. If they were ever given the credit they were due someone else would have scooped them up long before we got em with our lowly draft picks.

You can't totally discount Colorado and then take any kind of credit for beating a broken Philly defense. Hatcher was really the sum total of their defensive talent that was actually playing so you shot their lights out. Foote was basically the same for Colorado and we did the same thing to them in less games. The offenses you have been up against so far have been weak at best making your defensive numbers look way better than reality. The Sens missing Alf? The vaunted Rangers? Who's dreaded offense consists of two geriatrics in Jagr and Shanny who were undoubtabley great when they played for the Pens and Wings but their best days are way back in the rear view mirror. If you're going to start cherry picking stats and discount any high numbers the Wings have because you think Colorado was weak, I think we should just go ahead and reset all the stats you've wracked up playing three weak ass teams to zero. I would have rather played any team you have in the east and spotted them a one game handicap than play Dallas. No doubt your team is playing great but you've basically had a free ride so far.
