    Isles vs Pens

Or we could just wait until they play Atlanta again. As an owner of an NHL team, I should expect a fine for Mario now. Probably not in the Mark Cuban-range, but certainly enough to send a message to the rest of the league. $50k? I mean, if they can fine Dean Lombardi. . .

    Isles vs Pens

Sportsnet's John Shannon tweeted thusly: Only suspension for Penguins is the automatic suspension under Rule 70.1 for Eric Godard...Byslma off the hook. http://www.hockeyfights.com/leaders/teams/1/reg2011 Philly's 15th in the league in fights. Pens didn't win too many fights Thursday, and in fact seemed to be (smartly) shying away from them and turtling. Without Cros-kin, they're also going to have a tough time winning games.

    Mallkin out with torn ACL/MCL

At a cap hit of $8.7 million until 2013-14, that would totally suck for Pittsburgh, wouldn't it?

    Isles vs Pens

I understand why he did it, but any reduction means a league-mandated thumbs-up to a return to bench clearing brawls and no one in hockey is willing to come out and say they want that.

    Isles vs Pens

Now comes the fallout. Godard gets ten games for coming off the bench, automatic, unless they play the "But he's a Penguin!!!" card - a card they already played this week with Cooke. He won't get more and I would be surprised if Abysmal gets more than one game/$10,000 fine as punishment. I have a bit of trouble keeping my cheap-shotting Islanders apart, but I think Martin gets at least two for trying to fight a guy who wanted no part of it and Haley gets two to four for fighting twice in the same stoppage. The Gillies one is tough because it could be ruled under the headshots that it's a blindside hit, but seeing as a repeat offender (Cooke) got four games, it's hard to give him any more than that Campbell might issue some five-digit fines to both the teams, weighting the Islanders heavier since they instigated a lot of the fighting.

"One of the worst team in hockey" and "an embarrassment to the league" are also somewhat apt descriptions of the Penguins from 2001-2006.

    The Dreger Report

$2.7 million cap hit. 37 years old. Had to play as a forward recently because he doesn't fit into the Flames' top six anymore, and only just came back from missing 25 games with shoulder and rib injuries. He's also been a healthy scratch for the last week. On the upside a 29-year old Staios would have been a good player for the Wings if they didn't have to worry about the salary cap. But now he's simply run out of things to offer to an NHL team as a player.

    And he does it again!

"But I didn't mean to hammer him violently from behind into the boards!" <---- paraphrase http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Matt-Cooke-Wasn-t-my-intention-to-put-him-into?urn=nhl-320071&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

    Babcock post-game interview

    Mike Fischer to the Preds

He has two fights a year. It's not really that big a part of his game. No one goes, "Oh, s***, here comes Fisher to settle the score." I like his defensive abilities and his faceoff skills, although that percentage dropped this year. He is a strong factor when he feels like it (13 goals, 32 points in 78 games two years ago). He wasn't the key factor in their 2007 Cup run. If Fisher's "proved" he can score 25 goals (he's done it once and has 22-23 three times in 11 years in the league), then Cheechoo has "proved" he can score 56. At this rate, just imagine what the price tag would be for Spezza. Three firsts?

    And he does it again!

Roenick and Puck Daddy are right. The pocketbook is where you should be able to hit these guys the hardest. What do you think he's going to pay attention to more: a four game unpaid holiday just before the stretch run or a $500,000 fine?

    Souray too slow for Rangers

Slats and Tambi won't be dealing for the ex-NHL star Sheldon Souray. http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2011/02/07/souray_scouts_rangers/ If he were in the NHL, Souray would be a $5.4 million cap hit with one year left after this one. Slow defenceman, gets hurt in AHL fights, giant cap hit... wonder if Brian Burke would be sniffing around if it was any other team but Kevin Lowe's?

Trade Deadline and You are GM.

I wouldn't deal for anyone but a #6 defenceman, and I wouldn't give up anyone on the roster for this player unless his initials are "Ruslan Salei". Once healthy, the Wings are a solid, Stanley Cup competitive team. Too high of a cap hit, and too much term for the Wings to... Oh, I see what you did there.

    Who will Pittsburgh go after?

Dustin Penner, and in the summer they trade him to a sunbelt team for the last year of his fat contract. He would actually be a pretty good fit on the Pens IMO - better than Poni was.

    Forsberg Joins Avalanche

    Mallkin out with torn ACL/MCL

So did they rush him back when he wasn't ready? Because as sure as there are 176 fans online here all the time, that's going to be the question asked.

    Yzerman puts Smith on waivers

Oh, how quickly they forget the Brian Lawton-Barry Melrose era of 18 months ago. We're lucky they didn't fold after that reign of error. They've gone from being worse than Toronto last year to being second in the conference and on top of a very competitive, underrated division. Geef the man hees manny.

Mike Brown Signs 3 Year Extension With Toronto

The Leafs have the 28th best pk this year, and had the 29th best last year. As primarily a penalty killer, you can see he's clearly irreplacable. Actually, I think Tim Brent's performance last night shows Brown isn't even the best penalty killer among the growing list of "Leafs' fourth liners who used to be Ducks", and he's getting $160,000 less than Brown under the new deal.

Tampa Bay Lightning unveil new logo / jersey

The departure of silver is indeed disappointing and after black was one of their main colours, it's now gone entirely. Boo. I was never crazy about the number font for these ones, but it there any way they can go back to this:
  25. I agree, but I'll play devil's advocate: EDIT: Also, looking back, Brit Selby seems like a pretty weak choice. 1965-66 Toronto Maple Leafs NHL 61 14 13 27 26 NHL Totals 347 55 62 117 171 Must not have been any rookies in the league that year.
