Bold Predicitions for the 2010-2011 Season

The Lightning will make the playoffs as a #7 seed and knock out the Devils in the first round. The Wings will win the division handily with the league's lowest total number of fighting majors.

    Todd White Traded to Rangers

Meh. White has skill and potential for top six but he's had that label for awhile. Really isn't good enough to be a top six on a contending team. Good move for Atlanta if they want to create some cap space for somebody like Patrick Sharp. In before "Make it happen, Kenny."

    Antti Niemi files for arbitration

Someone will take him for a sign and trade as long as Bowman doesn't set the price tag too high. San Jose seems like they could take a one-year gamble on Niemi for a random prospect.
  6. Kyle Quincey anyone? This is a position that can be addressed via a trade for a team in loads of cap trouble. IE, we send prospects to Chicago, they send us a Keith or a Seabrook. We'll have $6.2 million in cap room if he retires next season, and #1 D isn't a position you want to cheap out on.

    I call shenanigans

    Another cash-grabbing Europuss!
  8. Hawks fans. The Hawks change half of their SC winning team in one summer and think they'll still have the same chemistry. Yves Racine stole his girlfriend 20 years ago and he's been pissed off ever since.

    Loophole

Because it's fun to see Chicago in cap hell?

    Loophole

I thought this was going to be a thread about: Would I close the contract loophole? You bet. By making the cap hit the average of the top three highest paid years of the contract, these kinds of deals would be stopped. This will be something we can bandy back and forth for fun when a Bettman/Fehr labor negotation in a couple of years combination forces another year-long lockout and 25 per cent roll back.

    The new TBL

There is a difference between a defensively reliable, net-clearing shot-blocking defenceman and a plug with skates like Walker. How he ever signed a 4-year, $6.8 million deal with the Lightning last summer is a testament to Brian Lawton's complete lack of GM intelligence. He's probably a good #4 defenceman on GR. The day the Wings pay a #6-7 defenceman $1.6 million/year is the day the salary cap is at $70 million.

    The new TBL

Some people on the board think that anyone who fights is elevated to godlike genius, and anyone who doesn't fight (Franzen) is a Europuss. They'll never look past the fighting because that's all they see. Truthfully, he's a $1.625 million liability every time he steps on the ice for the next three years for Philly. This is a horrible deal for Philly, but it was the best one on the table and one they had to take given their cap situation. Normally they were able to hide salary and shift guys on and off LTIR but they're clearly out of options if Gagne is healthy. But, wow. Stamkos, Gagne, St. Louis, Lecavalier... that's the beginnings of a good, top-five offense in the NHL. A couple more 20-goal guys develop and they're right up there with Pittsburgh at forward. Defense is still a problem, but it was also a problem with Walker there.

Dan Carcillo re-signs with Philly 1 yr $1.075

It's not the fighting that pisses me off about Carcillo, it's the diving and the yapping. It got terrible int he playoffs, and I hoped for Philly's sake they'd have looked elsewhere for agitation. Philly doesn't have a very good team. They squeaked into the playoffs on the last day of the season on a shootout win. Then, they beat the Jersey chokers, the Boston chokers and the tired Habs. They had the easiest road to the finals in decades because Montreal took out everyone good. Seriously, if they finish 12th in the conference next year, it wouldn't surprise me one bit. The bottom feeders in the conference like Atlanta and Tampa will be better next season, and I even think the Hurricanes will be better next year, moving to 10th or 11th.

    Boll Re-signs with Blue Jackets

Really cheap, too. http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/fantasy/2010/07/13/nichols-elias-healthy/ About halfway down At this rate, he'll have about 80 penalty minutes in the last year of his contract. Anyway, like I said, really cheap. Don't know that he signs with just anyone for that. Looks like the ol' hometown discount, if that's at all possible in Columbus.

    Dumbass Chicago prospects

Yeah, you pretty much either hate Kyle Beach or you play with him on your team. Not a lot of middle ground. He also got his panties in a twist because at the U-18s in 2007, taping a "Team Ontario" sign over his jersey at the selection camp, claiming preferential treatment for those players. AFAIK, he was never invited back to a Canada camp again. The Claude Lemieux comparison is a very good one.

    Sharks sign RFA Niklas Hjalmarsson

Agreed. Except it's really funny because it involves your douchebag neighbour who cheats with your wife and bought a Ferrari he can't afford.

    Sharks sign RFA Niklas Hjalmarsson

No. Very little risk for the Sharks here. Excellent work for Doug Wilson to screw his former team.

    Shea Weber named Nashville Captain

He's an RFA next summer. With his skill set and virtually unlimited ice time, Weber could easily command $6.5/year F**k, he's good.
