Not to de-rail my own rambling thread here, but I've never really seen why a #8 team making it to the finals is a good thing for hockey. If anything else, it highlights the games (particularly in the year the Ducks lost to the Devils) are called differently than the regular season, making who wins the conference ostensibly a moot point. "See?", the NHL says. "Just coast to playoff contention, win your last couple of games in the regular season and it's all good." The only difference between first and eighth in the conference in the first round is one piddly home game out of seven. The NFL never really struggles at the gate or in the TV contract because of the dominance of a few teams. The NBA has only a half dozen or so teams that can compete every night and the number of AL East pennants in the last 15 years show a wide disparity between two particular teams and the other three. Tiger Woods won more majors than anybody in the last 10 years and PGA ratings are never higher than when he's in a tournament. I know people who HATE the Yankees, the Red Sox, the Patriots, the Lakers, the Tiger Woods', but you know what? They talk about them. And they care. And they watch. I'm not saying this to you, Dano33, but if the NHL and some NHL fans don't think that having an alpha dog in the league is a good thing, they're simply not paying attention to what is going on around them.

It'll be funny to watch him get suspended for going after NBC stars Crosby and Malkin.

I know Bruins fans, I know Leafs and Habs fans, I know a Kings fan and a couple of Hawks fans, some Canucks, Flames, Rangers, Devils Flyers and Oilers fans. Didn't one of last year's Pens trolls claim he was the best defenceman in the playoffs last year because he never got a hooking/holding/interference call throughout the playoffs? Anyway, based on the Kronwall Doctrine of When Interference Majors Are Called (KDWIMAC), Orpik deserved at least 30 minutes in penalties last night, and Cooke deserved two penalties.

The moment a 38-year-old player becomes a healthy scratch is the moment he starts becoming expendable. The Wings are missing Dats and Kopecky and he still can't find his way past the Griffins. I know he's been hurt with a "lower/upper/undisclosed" injury, but come on. Two years ago, he'd play through anything. I don't want his last years with the team to be like Chelly's and just playing out the string as a 5th liner.

I think the decision to re-sign Hossa is a decision to be made one day after the Stanley Cup final, and not a day sooner. Let the series (and his play) ebb and flow and make that decision much easier.
