You are aware of how much ice time Hossa, Samuelsson, and Hudler took up right? It isn't as black and white as "Replace X with Y and see how many goals Y scores compared to X". -

The only reason it was a problem last year was because it wasn't sure if Osgood would be able to perform well in the playoffs. Osgood wins regardless of his save percentage. That has not been an issue since he has been in the league. It translated to 9 regulation losses last season and one this season. Once again it's been one game that everyone is basing their discussion on. That's my point. -

Well considering goaltending has never been a problem for Detroit with Osgood as a starter since he has always had a winning record with the club, I don't see why it should start to be one now. -
Didn't help he was dealing with personal issues. But come on, this is the Conn Smythe winner of 2003 and Stanley Cup winner of 2007. The guy is still a very good goaltender.

It's been two games for f***s sake. And Osgood has only played one. On foreign ice. -
It isn't simply that Helm isn't a star player. It is that Helm does not compliment the system as a top 6 player. Holmstrom has in the past, which is why he plays there. Holmstrom is no longer a first line player, but Helm is in no way a good replacement for him.

I watched the games, and Darren Helm is not the answer. He is an energy guy, not a skilled guy. And this isn't me defending Holmstrom. This is me beiong realistic and knowing that just because Helm is fast and had a great playoffs (from a third liner's standards) doesn't mean he would be an effective top line player.

Sure, but the point is that the Wings safety, well-being, and success doesn't hinge on if they have an enforcer. In 1997 having a gritty team up and down the lineup was the key to Detroit's success. They have had to adapt and now play a more finesse style (that has worked), and they do not rely on the gritty system they once did. Would I love an enforcer like May on the team? Hell yes. Do I think that without an enforcer like May the Wings will not succeed? Hell no.

If Raffy didn't have a NTC I'd say yes. That guy is just money in the playoffs, and is a more consistent regular season goaltender. But Raffy DOES have a NTC. Would the Ducks even want to do this deal?
