    Leafs lose Kaberle

Well, Brodeur won't get the shutout. 2-1 Devils (Colaiacovo). Leafs score three goals in less than 3 minutes. 3-2 Leafs, 7:30 left in the 3rd.

    Leafs lose Kaberle

He'll have a concussion, so he'll have to sit out at least seven days. Nah, they're pretty much where everyone expected them to be. Just waiting for Fergie to get his pink slip.

No, Pat Quinn was the GM for that season, plus the season after. Fergie was the GM for the '03/'04 season.

No, the bandwagoners. Every team has bandwagoners that think that every year is "the year", but the thing is, the Leafs have more of them because the fanbase is just that much bigger. It just seems like the majority because there are so many bandwagon fans, but I don't think it's out-of-proportion when compared to other teams. Most true Leafs fans, the ones who pay attention to the team year 'round, know the history and manage their expectations are smart people who are very, very frustrated by the lack of progress that the franchise has made since Pal Hal (Harold Ballard) died. I think another reason for the "this is our year" mentality is obviously the lack of success. Fans (especially during the Quinn era) saw a team that was good, and held out hope to the bitter end, even though those teams were painfully inferior to the truly successful teams of that time. These are generally your 20-something and 30-something fans who have gone their entire adult lives never having seen the Leafs do anything, except for a few near-misses ('78,'93,'94,'99, '02).

    Brodeur hot on Sawchuk's heels

Martin Brodeur with a 1-0 win tonight, has 92 career shutouts, which ties him with George Hainsworth for 2nd on the all-time shutouts list. He is now just 11 shutouts short of tying Terry Sawchuk's record of 103 career shutouts. It was his 12th shutout of the year, which ties his career-high.

Thanks. Really appriciate the widebrush thoughts. Good thing I don't think all Red Wings fans are as ignorant as that statement.

The powerplay gets booed a lot when it doesn't do much, and Kaberle is usually the one with the puck on the PP, so that might've been it. I only saw the last part of the game last night, so I'm not sure of the situation. Thanks, not all of us are braindead bandwagoners.
  13. Krupp is coaching Germany's national team, last I heard. He coached their World Junior team, that much I know.

Booing doesn't happen every game, just whenever they stink the joint out in a must-win game. Well, what else do you expect from hated rivals? Ever since Alfie fake-tossed his stick in the stands, he's got the boo-birds, both in Toronto and Ottawa. And you realize that 75% of the ACC is people who don't have a damn clue about hockey? Show some class? How about they give us a team we can be proud of? They'll never stop buying the tickets, but you expect the fans to put up with a non-playoff team? Get real.

McCabe gets booed because of his contract and the obvious flaws in his game which prove that he isn't worth anything close to what he is paid. Raycroft gave up 4 goals on 11 shots. He deserves everything he gets for that. I don't recall Kaberle being booed, he's a pretty popular guy. I'm sure the boo-birds would come out if Detroit was sitting in 10th place going into March. While the boos were partly for the players, I think a lot of it was pointed at the disgraceful job that Fergie Jr. has done in his three seasons as GM. Fortunately, it should be his last. They were also in 1st place for a majority of that time.

Official: Ryan Smyth dealt to Islanders

Well, some ironic comparables, given that it was Mark Messier Night.... Both Messier and Smyth played 12 years in Edmonton, both got dealt to a New York team. Of course, the similarities end when the five Cups thing comes up.
  18. You know what, hate Leaf fans for what they are, but God willing, one day they will win the Stanley Cup (they have to fluke it at least once, right? right?), and you won't be able to say "Well, they only show up because their team is good now." This is a team that goes beyond a fanbase. It's a culture, a religion. "In Toronto, there's only three things that matter: Family, going to church on Sunday, and the Toronto Maple Leafs." - Wayne Gretzky
  19. How? There hasn't been an unsold seat since 1946..... People will not give up their season's tickets (that have probably been in their family for generations) because they will never, ever get them back. Corporations will never give up their seats, because it's a big, fat tax write-off and it's "the place" to be seen in Toronto, which is huge with the yuppie crowd. Besides, MLSE would make sure that they don't get their seats back if they give them up. It's easy to say "don't go to the games and things will change", but it's impossible. The sheer demand for the product means they will always make mountains of money, though not as much lately, since they will miss the playoffs for the second-straight season. At least Fergie did what he does best today, he screwed up. He didn't make the team any better and they will miss the playoffs because of it. He will be fired because of it. They will finally get a real GM because of it, simply by the prescedent set by the Raptors and their new-found success this year. If you think that the owners don't want to win, you are dead wrong. More success means more money. More ad revenue through game advertising and rink-board ads, higher broadcasting fees and more of those highly-regarded playoff gates. It's not that they don't want to win, but they have non-hockey people like Dick Peddie and Larry Tanenbaum getting in the way of hockey operations. That will change when the new GM gets the "Colangelo Clause". They will have to get an experienced, savy general manager for the Leafs because that's what they did with the Raptors and it worked. They've backed themselves into a corner in that regard. It's going to be an interesting spring at 40 Bay St.
