All I said was "I think Howard got a HUGE helping hand from his teammates last night and some of his rebound control was ridiculous" I'm wasn't downplaying his effort, merely pointing out that his teammates came to his side after being down a goal twice after tying it at 2 and his rebound control was ridiculous at times. Other than that, I certainly liked what he did for us last night and do agree that it's a step in the right direction. Although, I'm not sure how Schneider's shot "surprised him" because I thought it was a goalies job to anticipate that he'll be shot at during the course of the game.

Glad to see level-headed discussion is alive and well here on LGW, as usual. Look, all I'm implying is that 5+ goal games shouldn't be expected from this year's team at the rate that the Wings put them up last season. The players we lost and the players we gained have been all been well documented and discussed on here already. Using that information, combined with what coaching and management have said before this season even began, was that this year is supposed to be more about defensive responsibility winning games more than dumping goals on the opposition winning games. Also, I'm NOT saying that the players you mentioned shouldn't be counted on to score. However, it should be noted that although it's only 10 games into this season, the Wings are already averaging 0.90 GPG less than last season at this time. Pasha scoring 2 goals and Homer adding another one should be enough for this team to win a game if they all lock it down in their own end after those goals. Having to score 5 goals just to win a game is NOT acceptable, especially when you have to put them past the (presumabely) best goalie in the NHL. So once again, I'm simply saying that if everyone is expecting big goal totals to come from this roster, that perhaps they should reconsider after looking at what has already been shown. We're going to have to grind out a lot more 1 goal games this season and I think people are just starting to realize that. And I'm sorry, but Homer leading the team in goals is great, but after 11 games I think everyone expected Pav and Hank to be a little closer in team totals then what they are right now. EDIT - Corrected my math.

I think Howard got a HUGE helping hand from his teammates last night and some of his rebound control was ridiculous. The fact that we scored 5 goals on Luongo is a massive feat for this years edition on the Wings and should NOT be relied on in future games. This was an exception, NOT the rule. That being said, a win is a win and its always a bigger deal with younger players in regards to their self-confidence. It was fantastic to see the team rally after each goal when it would have been easy to just say "here we go again". Great game, great result. GO WINGS!!!

D to Z to H!!!!!

Sounds good in theory. But then again, so does communism.
-
Why isn't it the same? Do other teams hold leads and get big stops late in the game?

Almost sounds like the week before the SCF.

I work 15 mins away from the HHOF so I'm there!!!

Although Kindl was a -1, at times it looked like he was the only D man out there. Ritola certainly looked good out there. He just always seemed to have the puck on a string along the boards. Axelsson looked decent as well even though he had a wide open net at one point and was denied by a last ditch leg stop by Reimer.

Poor outcome. I attended yesterdays game at the Graveyard...er...Ricoh Coliseum and for the most part it was a great game. Janik's last second goal in the first, Kindl's overall play, Ritola's board work, Larsson's net work, killing off a 5 on 3, and the return of Williams and Newbury to Toronto were all great to see. However, leaving Tlusti WIDE open in front of the net for the first goal and the lax coverage on Deveaux for the game winner were ridiculous. I was sitting on the opposite end, but from what I saw, that goal just shouldn't have happened and especially in the last minute of a tied game on the road. Griffs played 59 minutes of hockey and then I guess they mentally boarded the bus. Ah well, can't win 'em all. Already looking forward to my first ever trip to Van Andel on FRIDAY (November) THE 13TH for my birthday weekend! Dollar beer/dollar dogs!!! I'm also looking forward to some redemption the following weekend when the Griffs return to Toronto. GO GRIFFS!!!!

Sorry, but he got to the post season on the back of Ty Conklin and our NHL leading goals per game. Neither of which we will be in possession of this season.

Goaltending. You can't be expected to always be focused on your job and perform as a forward or defenseman when you're terrified that every single mistake that you make will end up in the back of your net. Goaltending got a "get out of jail free" card last season, but when the new season starts the EXACT way it ended, things need to be addressed. "It's only two games, relax". Ya, I get that. I also recall the progression of last season as something along the lines of: 1) "It's only the first month, relax" 2) "It's only the first half of the season, relax" 3) "Ozzie is taking a break and will come back better, relax" 4) "Relax, we've made the playoffs and Ozzie will be better" I'm always prepared to eat crow for this team, but my patience is being tested here. What irks me more is the fact that our division has clearly taken a sharp swing upwards in the talent range not only with their skaters but also with their own goaltending (Mason CBJ, Mason STL, Rinne NSH) while we've remained stagnant. I love Ozzie to death, but the fact that the organization is relying heavily upon him to carry the load is a bit ridiculous. Yes he's been successful in the past, but every year that passes now is another year against him and trying to fight time is a fight that very few people in the NHL win, much less goalies. Unless your last name is Brodeur that is. Living in the Toronto area, I see frightening parallels between what Detroit is doing and what Toronto used to do; and that is place too much expectation on older players in hopes of breakout years/high output to carry the team. Now, before you jump down my throat on that last one, just realize that I know the Cup count for our vets crushes the Cup count Toronto's vets had. However, that's in the past, and resting on your laurels has never been a trait of the Red Wings but seeing the growing number of positions filled by "experienced" players starts becoming a concern more and more as the years pass and perhaps this season is finally the season we start accepting that time is no longer on our side. Anyway, this has been the only time I've really tossed my $0.02 in the goalie discussion so I'm a bit long winded this time. Just know that I'm rooting for our goalies this year and hope I'm wrong on every account. /rant

They took 1 year deals at 1.5 million because it was Ken Holland and the Detroit Red Wings offering it.
