If Hudler went away for a dozen years or so, came back to the Wings as a shoe-in for the Hall of Fame, and was good for 30 goals a season, then I think I would let him slide on defense and digging out of corners. Those precap teams were stacked and didn't need to be balanced either. Huds has to establish his game before he should be allowed to play it. I would bet Babs is not making unreasonable demands of him, but I would imagine that his expectations certainly would include fundamentally sound positional play - getting his body in the right place versus just reaching with his stick for pucks.

While I'm sure Babcock's opinion is held very highly, Kenny is the one who has to make it a reality and reconcile business and hockey operations and most importantly fill the needs of the club.. So if it's scoring that the team needed wouldn't we get a better return out of Flip? He actually has marketable value when he doesn't score. Babs is a pro and is perfectly capable of both working with personnel not of his choosing and also of understanding the constraints of the business side of the team. ***The more I think of it though the more I waver because if we could dump huds for a much smaller contract, maybe we could open up enough space for a nice deadline pickup.
-
No, but its not up to Babs. Kenny won't dish him for only a prospect, they're not gonna get $3m worth of points for him, and another 4th liner would be as useless as **** on a bull. A couple prospects or a propect and a decent pick maybe. I can't see teams lining up for a deal like that though.
-
A good porter like Smuttynose or Fuller's would be nice.
-
I'm not looking to dump him at all. He has every reason in the world to improve and the ability to do so. I just don't think many teams would be willing to pick up his contract -cap space or no- if he didn't improve. The Wings also have a greater ability to wait for him to improve because they have 4 good lines and can sit him if need be. Of course having $3m sit in the press box is not a good thing, but doing that and having one of the best records in the league lessens the sting. Certainly if we had no obligation to him and $3M to spend he wouldn't be the first choice, but if we had to trade we'd only get either an equivalent $3m dog in return, or role players (which we have an excess of) or later draft picks. If he sticks it out with the Wings and even partially rebounds it will be a net gain, and the team will be in a good position to resign him at a relative bargain.

How do you expect that his trade value would go up if he doesn't shape up? The point is Leino cost nothing for another team to take a chance on. It's an entirely different story with Huds. Unless Detroit bought out a portion of his salary why would anyone else want to pay his salary, especially if he didn't shape up.
-
I was the one who mentioned the Brown hit. I still think its true. He plays afraid. That said, I do expect him to pick it up however long it may take. He really has no choice. Unlike Leino, his salary is a big downside risk and makes a trade unlikely. Also, If he finishes out his contract playing this poorly he may as well say goodbye to the NHL.

Watching old games, thoughts on hitting & where it's headed
kook_10 replied to theman19's topic in General
I think you have a misguided notion about old shoulder pads. They weren't like pillows at all. They were more like wearing a stiff layer of cardboard. In fact, the new shoulder pads are much softer, but they just have plastic caps on the pads. The new pads disperse the energy of impact on the person wearing them. Because of that guys aren't afraid to go at each other at full speed. With the smaller pads, if you took a huge run at a guy it hurt, and you had a better chance if getting injured yourself. The old pads also didn't go far down the chest at all so you also stood a good chance of getting a stick or an elbow to the ribs. Remember how much smaller elbow pads were too? The old pads actually hurt more in general to places like your shoulder, ribs etc but because those are so protected now the real damage comes from guys hitting with more momentum than ever. -
you guys didnt miss much. it was just a pretty short and fluffy interview. no revelations.
