Watching the Ducks / Thrashers game I noticed they now have four players of African descent: Dustin Byfuglien, Anthony Stewart, Evander Kane, and Johnny Oduya. I don't remember any other team having as much diversity represented. Personally I think thats a good thing and wonder if it's a coincidence that its happening in Atlanta. Whattya think?

ehhh...I hate the Ducks as much as anyone, but that's a late hit. He didn't commit to it until the puck was gone, and then took two strides to make it. I don't think it was a textbook blindside, but he probably didn't expect to be hit so late. In the new vocabulary of the league though it was "predatory".

I think all this tinkering hurts the integrity and credibility of the game - especially changes having to do with wins and losses. Any change they make should be agreed to be in effect for a long period of time, like 10 years or something like that. Otherwise it just seems like they're ******* around with the game.

Selanne would have fit in nicely.

In that playoff stretch he really dazzled playing North/South but I can't say that he stood out to me in the defensive zone. His problems to me seem to be size related - he is good when he has his knees bent and is skating, but when he is trying to hold the offensive blue line or the front of the D- net he is too upright and because of that has slow first strides and has to rush decisions with the puck.

Sure "diversity" is a hackneyed and vague term, but the point of my post was that it was good to see a historically underrepresented group have so many guys on one team. They're nowhere near the talent of the Russian Five, but if they were to skate a line I think the cultural significance would be similar. It's unfortunately most often not the case that black and white are culturally similar in the US, and while the players themselves may identify themselves as similar, they without a doubt all do recognize themselves as role models for a minority. Personally, I used to play as a little kid in LA against Richard Park (formerly of the Islanders, Wild, Pens) and I remember it was his dream to be the first Korean to play in the NHL. While he was just another guy (albeit incredibly talented) to the rest of us, this dream was important enough to him and his family that they moved to Canada when he was 13 so he could have the best chance to make it happen. [in the end Jim Paek beat him to Pittsburgh by a year].
