Babcock: Improvement to come from within

I genuinely believe we will see some improvement from within. A lot has been made of the team being tired from all the hockey, but I think that problem of physical exhaustion was a result of less off season time to devote to strength training. I know Zata played put up some great numbers in the playoffs and some decent numbers during the year, but there were many times where he just looked dog tired out there. He was far from the only one too. Throughout the first 2/3 of the season most of the vets looked flat. A longer summer will mean that he, Flip, Dats, Raffi, Clears, Drapes and the rest will get more time in the weight room so they can get tougher on the puck and not get as tired from just playing hockey.

    Ville Leino Appreciation Thread

My ears must be deceiving me. I just came home from dinner and I thought for a second the guys on Versus described Leino as being "the best player on the ice tonight for either team" after the *second period.

Who should we Keep? Release? Sign?

I agree. While I love those guys we just can't match up well when we dress 6 fourth liners. In a perfect world, I'd like to see a guy like Bert skate on the 3rd line and actually produce. I just don't think Bert is hungry enough to do that.

Who do you cheer for now?

I will root against Pittsburgh, but I usually don't actively root for any team, just good hockey.

Thanks for the Great Season, Detroit!

Jimmy D said early in the season the best these guys could ask for was just to get into the playoffs. Little did he know what kind of injuries and adversity these guys would have to fight through to get to where they did. The second half of this season was absolutely amazing, and I am as proud as ever to be a Wings fan, and proud of the team for what they accomplished this year. Thank you.
  12. from the deepest bowels of a disturbed mind... no really. ***the cool evil wings from your big pics reminded me of something from that movie, and as luck would have it the poster worked well.

    HBO Broadstreet Bullies Documentary

Yeah - it was, uh, interesting to see Bobby Clarke's 30 ft windup and slash on Kharlamov's ankle again, but this time in HD on a big TV. Ross Lonsberry used to play in my beer league out in LA a few years ago. Even as an old timer he had amazing puck sense.

    HBO Broadstreet Bullies Documentary

I watched it this morning too. It was cool. As you say it's not so often you see HBO doing anything about hockey, but its also not so often here in the states we see anything containing old time hockey. For that reason too it was cool to see the archival footage in HD. It definitely left me wanting more. FYI It's available On Demand too.

    Hal Gill penalty watch thread

As Mick and Ken were saying last night "...if you ain't cheating you ain't trying". You've honestly never noticed the way Nick holds his stick out in front of him parallel to the ice to slow down the forechecker on dump ins? Or all the cute picks the Wings set in the offensive zone? The closer you watch, the more they all interfere, set picks, slash, crosscheck, and do all things illegal. As professionals their job is to know where the line is and play up to it and over it when the referees allow it.

    Hal Gill penalty watch thread

Crosby only has 3 assists, 8 shots, and is +/- 0 in the series. Gill is a +3 in the series and leads his team in the playoffs. He has also blocked 49 shots so far this playoffs. In comparison, Stewie leads the Wings with 18. Say what you want, but the guy knows how to use his big body. How many goals have the Wings given up this playoff season from not clearing out the slot?

  20. That's a good one! Maybe they could also have instead of the Dunk Tank, the DRunk Tank, where once you throw a ball on target a player gets dropped into a drunk tank full of their opponent's fans. Crosby in a the tank with a bunch of drunk Philly fans would be a good start.

Gill >>> Ericsson and has been a great use of $1.5M in Montreal. He and Gorges have been playing pretty darn well this playoffs. Look at what they've done to Ovi and Sid.
