The Wings look tougher this year than they have in recent memory.

I sort of agree with this. What I think that means though, is that the Wings don't have the skill level they've had in the past which had allowed them to execute the puck possession style of play they want to. Early in the year it became apparent that the new guys don't have the poise to hang on to the puck, and don't have the skill to keep/take it away from their opponents with finesse, so they've had to fight for more pucks and physically engage in battles for the puck. This year we've seen as many blind passes and desperate puck dumps as the Wings had made probably in the previous 3 or 4 years. I think Babs as well as the boys see that the physical engagement that is necessary is also part mental. As such the Wings can't let themselves get pushed around after the whistles, or else they will get pushed around in the corners and in front of the net too. If you can't keep the puck you have to win the puck. -
Maybe the Canadians just want to play with themselves?

If by flourish you mean "tries hard and doesn't produce", then we don't need any more flourishing.

this guy has 10,000 points, 10,000 rebounds, 4 time allstar 2 championships. i'd say he might have a slight edge on Z at this point, but Z has a lot of game left.

saw it, but didn't get to touch it, before game 4 of the 1993 SCF in Los Angeles.

you could have a balanced pair of tags in the puck. they're plenty small enough. with a 3 point sensor system it would see everything.

Someone could probably do something with RF tags, which are ridiculously small these days, but there would be a few big challenges. You are right, it would be a challenge to ensure the puck's dynamics aren't changed by putting something really tiny in the middle. Strength of signal through the rubber of the puck could be an issue, being frozen may be an issue, and certainly being rugged enough to take a 100+ mph slapshot would be an issue. If there were antennae in the goalposts and the crossbar then the position could be triangulated, so it would know if the puck went over. Since the puck is 3 inches in diameter and the goal line is 2in wide, you would also know if it crossed the line by only signaling a goal when the center of the puck is 2.5in past the center of the goal line (where the receivers would be positioned in the middle of the goal posts).

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=306033 My first reaction is "yeah, so? a good gooning like this would have been therapeutic for the Wings out on LI". After watching the highlights though and seeing Bolduc getting his ass absolutely handed to him I am thankful the Wings thought the better of it. What is it with Vancouver though? They've been in the middle of everything this week. If this is true, I think it creates a little more doubt in my mind with regards to the Burrows/Auger thing. It's not that the incidents are related, but it would go to show a win-at-all costs scratch-and-claw kind of mentality. I certainly don't follow Vancouver religiously, but has there been a more intense competitive drive / more desperation with them this year? Also, what's up with Boogard making waves about this? He didn't strike me as the type of guy that would blab to the press about something like that.

John Scott is listed at 6'8" 258 lbs - you gotta have brass balls, hands of cement, and a head full of rocks to challenge that.
