    Joe Louis Arena Music

Im looking to play around with this custom audio feature on xbox 360's NHL 09 where I can make custom audio for in game situations and menu music, so as a Red Wings fan I want to use the music they use at the Joe. Things like, home team penalty, away team penalty, goals, wins, intermission music, off play music, home team intro, yada yada. Feel free to post what ever you hear at the Joe as I would like as much as possible. Thanks

    New Arena Name?

So I thought it would be fun to think of some names for the potential new Red Wings Arena. For the past few years, when my brother, friends and I attend games, a common topic that arises is possible names for the New Arena. Always trying to come up with creative and funny names becomes quite ammusing if you're a wings fan. Try and refrain from corporate sponsor names, because, although the Arena will probably be named after its corporate sponsor, its much more fun the other way. Here are a few of our ideas and we'll see where this goes - "Howezerman Arena" (for obvious reasons of course) - "Little Caesars Centre", "Little Casears Palace/Arena" etc. (while this is a corporate name, seeing as how the teams owner also owns our favourite arena pizza, we think its funny) - "The New Olympia" - or the classic, "Red Wings Centre"

new faceoff rules. It seems like it just more face time for the linesmen...what is supposed to be 15 seconds or whatever in between whistles turns into 10-45 cause the refs wont drop the puck.

    New Arena?

You know I think you`re onto something here. Im from windsor and I think an exhibition ghame would be great. We have a new arena for the spitfires that while it only holds about 6000 seats, would be perfect and show the windsor fanbase their appreciation.

    New Arena?

well sir, you go tell that to mr ilitch who is giving away tickets through the third round of the playoffs in order to fill his arena. Get over it, times have changed. This is not copying, its called staying with the times. why dont they have someone manually zamboni the ice too

    New Arena?

My point in my post was this. As all of us would like to see hockey as a sport, it is no longer the case. It is a business. There are two types of hockey fans, those who are there for the game and those who are there for the experience. Unfortunatley, most buildings cannot sell out with just fans who are there for the game. While we were able to get away with having a good team and fairly old arena, these days are over. In economic times like this, people must justify spending the money on the ticket based on more than just the game, otherwise they could get the same entertainment value watching it at home. I have seasons tickets and attend most if not all games. I have not made suggestions to add ice dancers, or a mascot, or anything outragious that would alter the face of the franchise, however I was merely proposing some suggestions that would improve the experience of the average hockey fan. I would much rather see an arena full with 20,000 fans (14,000 hardcore, 6,000 average fans) than 14,000 total. If you dont think this affects the players think again. Other than the fact that the wings have a little more sleep for home games, and the history involved, we dont really have much of a home ice advantage. Our crowd is quiet and weak, and the atmosphere is stale. The only chance the wings have at this point to boost attendance, and restore the excitment in the joe is to either build a new arena, finish last and get a superstar, or change the way things are done at the joe Ie. the suggestions I posted earlier. Those who disagree and believe that its all about the product on the ice should look at how much they really know about the game, because at this point, its more than just a game
  10. Zetterbeard40

    New Arena?

No, i do not think it would spark the current red wings, however I do think a new arena would restore an interest in going to red wings games. Dont get me wrong, our fanbase is still large, however our attendance is not. We can blame it all we want on the economy, but the Joe is old, outdated, boring and not appealing to the average fan who is going for entertainment value rather than to watch their team. Unfortunately we do not live in a market where no matter how good or bad our team is our seats will be filled, we have to offer something else than the product on the ice. I believe a new arena would fill the seats, and give the team a little more drive and something to play for rather than 14,000 quiet fans at the Joe. With all of this said, its not going to happen for a while, hence I propose a few suggestions that can spice up the joe, and be long-term investments that can be moved to the new arena. 1.) New Scoreboard - this would make the Joe look a little newer, give the fans something appealing to look at during off-time and can be moved to a new arena upon construction. 2.) Digital video scoreboards along the outer edge of the arena - Rather than having nothing above the suites, other than some old 'around the league scoreboards' that dont even work, these would also make the Joe more appealing and can once again be moved to the new location. 3.) New Anthem singer - sorry Karen, you're passed your prime. The appeal of a good looking women singing the anthem has lost its value, and Im not even American. I would like to see a tenor come in (like chicago) who can belt out the national anthem and get the arena pumped up for the upcoming game. 4.) Replace Bud Lynch (Spelling?) - While i adore bud's story, and his loyalty to the organization, his time has also passed. We need someone who once again can pump up the arena after a goal, before a powerplay etc. And most of all, we need someone who can correctly pronounce names of players. 5.) Permanent pre-game shows - Why is it that the Joe only has pre-game shows or entrances for the playoffs. Don't tell me its because they can't turn on the lights without time to warm up, because they have no problem doing it for playoffs. Every team in the NHL does it and I dont see why we can't either. I have plenty more, but I guess the point im trying to make is that the Joe is a terrible venue in the new NHL. Your average hockey fan is not going to pay an average of 50 dollars per ticket to simply go see a game. There has to be entertainment value included, simple business, and the Joe has zero. It seems as though Ilitch does nothing but offer cheaper tickets to fill the seats, but he'll figure out soon this is not the answer.

    Draper's status

And really, this is one series I wouldn't mind Aaron Downey being in the lineup one bit. Drapes centering Helm and Downey anyone? Come on people lets get serious. If we have Aaron Downey in our lineup we will have issues. What is he going to do, go out and fight, spend 5 in the box, and then play the rest of his 4 minutes in ice time. He is useless in the playoffs because people dont fight, and otherwise, he is no good. We have our energy guy who hits and his name is Darren Helm. Even if we sat Malts or Kopy, Downey does not bring to the tabel what they do. You will not see him in the lineup at all, unless its to get his name on the cup late in the final. Our lineup looks great as is, with Draper in it will look even better. I would say to sit Kopy simply because of Malts experience and penalty killing ability. Move Helm over to winger. Drapes centers the 4th line, and we're laughing, cruising our way to the finals.

    A sea of red

Here is my issue with the colour change. I agree, the red jerseys are both BOld, intimidating and classy, however I much prefer the Home whites. Whites in my opinion should be home for all sports and its for the following reason. Call me a loser but from a marketing standpoint, the NHL totally F'ed up by making the darks home. Every team that comes to the joe or any other arena looks the same. They all wear white with a logo in the middle. Most people who are not huge hockey fans probly dont know the difference because all of the away jersey for the most part all look the same. When you have a team coming in with their dark colours, lets say the wings going to phoenix, this is something the home crowd can distinguish the teams by, because its their real colours. I dunno, I just like the reds away way more, as a wings fan, and as a season ticket holder who gets sick of seeing the away team come to the joe with the same old plain white jersey....BOOORRRIIINNNGGGG

    A sea of red

The Red Wings have tried this a couple of playoff runs and it didnt work for a couple of reasons. One year (cant remember which year) they had the slogan "Get your Red on", attempting to get everyone to wear red.....didnt work. Another year, they had "Join the red wave".....needless to say, didnt work. They have given out shirts, probly 3 different series in the last 2 years, problem is, too many of the lower bowl seats are corporate, so those seats are filled with people wearing dress shirts and suits, and they will not wear a red shirt over top fearing that their client wont like it. The other reason the red wings cant do it, is because of the home colour change. Red Wings fans are still very attached to the white jerseys as the traditional home colours, hense why you see lots of white jerseys. Hockey fans like wearing jerseys, so people will wear what they have, and I would say 50% of the jerseys in the joe at any given game are still the white Yzerman. This is why we cant get a full red crowd, and to be honest, whio cares, every team does it now, so its nothing original. All I wuld like to see is towels, those are sweet any game. But if we're looking for a full corwd of one colour, you might have to go to washington/calgary/phoenix, cause it aint happenin in the D. The Joe always has a good mix of red and white tho, which I think is good enough.

    3rd Jerseys...

I agree, the Winter classics would be a cool third jersey, however, i think it would be best to take off the shoulder patches, making it a true throwback....maybe wear it against original six teams much like the Leafs do with their throwback. As for black third jerseys, not a chance...Not only is Mr I a huge fan of tradition, but black is not even a colour in our logo, therefore, it should not be on the jersey.
  17. First I will start by saying it's kind of nice to see the fire in the eyes of most hockey fans come this time of the year. There is no doubt that playoff time is quickly approaching. My Opinion on the subject: It is obvious that we have had defensive/goalie issues this year, what it is caused by i could not tell you. Could it be the short summer, bordem in the regular season, who knows. The fact of the matter is, we still have 94 points with 16 games remaining. If we win HALF of those games, and whos to say we wont win more than half, we will finish with 110+ points in the regular season. Detroit won the presidents trophy last year with 115 points. Keeping this stat in mind, no we probably wouldnt have been better off signing a high priced goalie in the offseason. Marian Hossa has come through all year with timely goals, good defense, and the fact that he wears down teams defenses allowing our other studs to shine (datsyuk zetterberg etc.) Lets face it, the NHL is a far better league with many better teams than last year, not to mention our division has become extremely competitive. If we finish with 110+ points id still say this has been a very good season, especially considering the trend of Stanley cup finalist teams s***ting the bed the next year (lol Pittsburg). As much as it would be nice to see us with a stud goalie, starting 70% of the games, we would not have been able to sign marian hossa, a perennial allstar, who if things go right, could sign in Detroit for years to come, bollstering or roster. The red wings have always gotten away with not paying a goalie an outragious amount due to tenascious "D" and skilled forwards on both the offesnive and defensive side of the puck. Every year someone questions the red wings decision in net, yet we've won 4 cups since 1997, more than anyone can claim. Whether Chris Osgood or Ty Conklin finishes the season and enters the playoffs as the starter, we can once again claim, that our goalies have combined to produce more wins than almost all of the teams in the league, and when it comes down to it, whether they give up 5 goals or 2 goals in a winning effort, the Win is all that matters. Detroit has taken more penalties this year than previous years, which in no way shape or form helps the goalies. Detroit management also has to take into account that some of our roster, (Lidstrom, Rafalski, draper, maltby, holmstrom, etc.) are approaching the end of the careers and we will see the face our team change drastically. This is maybe why you saw Holland and Co. draft a goalie 1st overall last draft in McCullom, something theyve rarely done, in hopes that he will become the backbone of our defense when these players who are so important to our teams philosophy retire. Maybe im rambling on a bit, but i guess the point im trying to make is that no we WOULD NOT have been better off signing a goalie in the offseason. Players like Marian Hossa, willing to take such a paycut to play in an organization like detroit dont come along too often, and Holland recognized this. Lets not forget the philosophy the league has these days, doing whatever they can to help the team behind, with rediculous amounts of penalties and what not. To sum it up, the league is way better, The red wings will still finish in the top 3 of the league, make the playoffs for the 17 or 18th straight year (cant remember dont feel like looking it up) and we will once again have a great shot at bringing a cup home to detroit. When it comes down to it, all you can ask for in professional sports is a chance. I will say, when it does happen (Detroit winning the cup this year), whether our goaltending is good or mediocre in the playoffs, I will once again laugh at all the Red Wing haters. Go Wings Go

Best possible red wing lineup come playoff time?

Here are what I would like to see as the Lines... 1st - Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Holmstrom (No brainer pending Holmer can stay healthy playing 1st line minutes) 2nd - Hossa, Franzen, Hudler (2 scorers, Hudler a great playmaker = devistating second line) 3rd - Samuelsson, Filppula, Cleary 4th - Leino, Draper, Helm (Awesome 4th Line) Scratch - Maltby, Kopecky Defense 1st - Lidstrom, Rafalski (No brainer) 2nd - Kronwall, Stuart (Hitting Line) 3rd - Lilja, Ericsson (Another Hitting Line)
  19. Zetterbeard40

NHL should do something about this.

Ok heres what you do. Go to the box office or call the box office and buy tickets. Rarely are the Red Wings sold out. Their site advertises more than affordable deals on tickets. I laugh at the people who buy off scalpers when they could walk to the box office and buy tickets. You can get tickets for almost every wings game, and most likely all the way through thr playoffs until the finals. Word of advice, dont buy off scalpers

    Red Wings fans

I'm going to have to agree with the original poster on this topic and I will state my reasons why. As a season ticket holder I get to see this all too much, and it makes a good case for the people that say that Detroit isn't hockeytown anymore. For starters, there is a rule at Joe Louis that states, "That you cannot go to your seats until the play has stopped". For some reason, people believe they can go to their seats whenever they want, during the play. Well I'll have to agree that this does get super annoying, especially when they dont know where their seats are and block the play for 5 minutes. Secondly, most red wings games are at 7:30, so there should be no reason to be late. It takes Jow louis until around the second period to have all sold seats filled. As has been the case for years, the lower bowl is almost always 1/3 empty, due to corporate slugs not even in their seats and probably drinking in the Olympia room. Why pay 100+ for your seat if you're not even going to watch the game. The one that pisses me off the most is when fans leave with 4 minutes left in the game. Ive seen it happen every game whether its a 1 goal or 4 goal game. We might as well start calling detroit "avoidtraffictown". Don't get me wrong, i can understand that some people dont like waiting in traffic, but didnt you know that was going to happen when you realized you were going to a professional sporting event with excess of 20,000 fans attending. I'll be the first to say, and especially as a Canadian Red Wings fan, that we have some of the weakest fans in the league. We dont cheer loud, we dont chant, other than the occasional "Lets go red wings" chant which is weak to say the least, and all the more often I hear people say dumb stuff in the stands. Although I'll be the first to say we have the best hockey team and organization in the league, our fanship "at the game" does not warrant the Title Hockeytown. Im sure everyone who checks out this board is a pretty hardcore hockey and detroit fan, but the original poster is right, our fans at the games are weak. We dont even cheer when the "Buffalo Wild Wings Noise Meter" shows up on the screen. Maybe its that red wings fans are spoiled with winning, but if thats the case, then thats bulls***, because you should never take a winning team for granted. Teams like toronto/montreal/minnesota/other wouldnt dare leave early or leave their seats during the middle of the game.

Red Wing scouts in ATL again

I don't see them going after a tender, and I've actually heard a bunch of times on 97.1 that Holland said he will NOT be shopping for a goalie. Holland is looking for a crease clearing defensmen, Havelid possibly. He's Swedish, and we all know the wings love the swedes. Lebda/Chelios are not what you want to be going into the playoffs with as your 6th defensmen. The reason I say we wont get a goalie is simply because we are stuck with osgood for the next 2 years after this year at 1.4 and 1.1 million. Although Ozzie may not be the answer to our goaltending woes, we cant afford to pay for a "franchise" goalie, especially if we plan on keeping, Hossa/Franzen/Hudler. Not to mention we just drafted Tom McCullom as our 1st overall pick last year. Of course he's young, but with Conklin showing he can play as a starter and win, we're better off giving Conklin a bit of a pay increase, keeping him around to share duties with ozzie until ozzie retires, and wait for one of our drafted goalies to become NHL ready. Lets not forget Larsson/Howard. I could see Fill being moved to allow us to get a D-man like Havelid as well as free up some space under the cap, and to be honest i would be more than happy with that trade. We have forwards that can replace fill on the penalty kill (Helm), and offensively, well i guess anyone can replace him offensively cause he's non-existent aside from the odd assist. My final thought, if we make any move at the deadline, it will be for a big D-man that can clear out the front of the net on the 3rd d-line.
  22. Zetterbeard40

    Why does Kopecky...

Kopecky is there to provide HJ's and keep his boyfriend Marian Happy...no other reason. He's poop. King of the "skate into the offensive zone and take alow percentage shot into the goalies chest". KOPECKY YOU SUCK!!!

    Retire #'s 18,25,33,96

I don't understand why everyone questions Osgood's past and ability and doesn't give him credit. Give me one player in all of professional sports (and Im sure theres a few but not many) that was HOF worthy, or jersey retirement worthy without having a great team around him. Not many right. Thing is, you can say Ozzie isnt elite because his numbers are inflated due to the team around him, but I guess that goes for Sawchuk as well. So im going to go out on a limb and say that yes, you can compare Osgood and Sawchuk. The only thing we have to go on with this argument is numbers, because the game was so different, the league was smaller, so on and so forth. And the numbers are comparable. So why isnt osgood comparable. Did Brodeur not have a great team around him his entire career, did Jordan not have a great team around him his entire career. So to say that Osgood doesnt deserve these honours is wrong, because he's a winner, and has been his entire career. If it were the wings that won him games, than Legace would be still with us, Joseph would still be with us etc. Osgood may be on the tail end of his career, but IMo, he has been fantastic for a long time, and is worthy of both honours. Like I said, when it comes down to it, all of these arguments are opinion and judgment based, so all we have to go on that is concrete is numbers, and the numbers dont lie.

    Leino and Helm

I agree totally with everything you've said. In my opinion, Filppula is overrated. I find that alot of people give him credit where credit is not due, simply because he was talked so highly by the red wings. Well when it comes down to it, he's not producing as much as he's being paid for. He can't get into the middle of the ice, is EXTREMELY weak in the physical game (gets knocked off the puck almost every time), and frankly, he CAN NOT finish. Filps is a great skater and plays great defensively, but so does Kris Draper. Look at what we're paying Sammy. He's making half of what fillps is making and is playing a hell of alot better. Im not sayin that I think filpps should go and sammy should stay, but I just feel like 3-3.5 million/year could be used elsewhere and more effectively. Everything we've heard about fillps is how good he's supposed to be, and although he is still very young, I really havent seen many huge improvements in his game. With that said, I say we say goodbye to Fillpula. Not only will this open up some room to sign guys that we cannot lose, but it also allows us to maybe make a move at the deadline to shore up some issues we have, ie. defense, goalie, grit. I was listening to 97.1 the other day and a question really made me think. The question was, "What is the one thing that the Red Wings miss from last years team?" This question was really intriguing to me, because it wasnt a simple answer. When it comes down to it, we gained an all star in Hossa, and lost Drake and Hasek. Well my answer to this question is that we miss a guy like Drake. Im not sayin we need a fighter, but our so called "energy line", is energyless. Drake brought grit to that fourth line. Although Draper works hard, and Maltby claims to bring grit, he really doesnt. He's old and doesnt hit guys, more of just a rub out. If I could trade a Fillpula who is making 3 million per year, and pay a guy about a million or less to play on that fourth line who is going to hit, skate all over the ice, and maybe throw them down once in a while, id be all for it.

Fighting "rules" to be looked at

Come on people. I like fighting in hockey just as much as everyone else, but somewhere something has to change. I know there have been isolated occurences of head injury, and death, but that doesnt mean that if something can be prevented then you shouldnt do it, to keep the history and tradition in the game. Players evolve and get stronger and faster, and sometimes rules have to compensate for this. I know that I would much rather see a few broken hands a year then concussions and possibl life threatening injuries. How many times do we see a fight end with a body slam and someone on their back, almost hitting their head. When it comes down to it, rules are voted on by the owners, and if Im an owner, and Im spending 500k-8 million per year on a player, you bet your ass I want to protect my investment. As for fighting with visors, this problem can be fixed easily. Many equipment companies have visors that are clip on and clip off pieces. Anyone in the league who wants to wear a visor has to wear a removable one. As for the rule of taking helmets off during a fight, I 100% agree with this. This is about protecting the ga,e and marketing a safe game for younger generations. Whether helmets are removed or not, people will still go see NHL game and enjoy nhl fights, but when it comes down to it, if Im a parent of a youth hockey player, and my son/daughter is risking life threatening injuries to keep the "tradition" in hockey, then Im not too comfortable with that. We can sit here and argue until we're blue in the face about what to do about certain rule changes, but sports evolve, and rules must accomodate this evolution.
