And when Salei drops the gloves to defend Modano, it will appear as though all is forgiven. Yea it's going to happen, someone will hit Modano hard into the boards from behind, he'll be fine but Salei will pound that guy old school style. Highlight of the night

Never seen the handshakes, but crosby lifting the cup was everywhere last year. If it's any consolation... when Yzerman lifted the cup he raised it to the crowd, when crosby lifted the cup he raised it as if he himself had won it. Yzerman will always be the better captain

So how are they going to be honoring Probert? I know 24 won't be retired but feels odd not to take it out of circulation at least this year.

I watched the 97 Cup Final game 4 this past weekend, that eased the pain a little bit. Hopefully get through until at least pre-season.

Obvious that we're going to trade, but we ARE still under the cap aren't we? If i calculated it right about 80K-ish. Now that this is over, just wait and see who's heading out

he hasn't been on the ice for a goal against since May!

The single biggest scapegoat of the Red Wings in the last 20+ years...
SDavis35 replied to stevkrause's topic in General
Cujo was the reason I became a hockey fan, and then a huge part in what brought me to the Wings. It was a mistake for him to come here, but I don't regret it one bit I remember 2004 my friend (leaf fan) talking about how bad cujo was in the playoffs, I just pointed to the numbers and they spoke for themselves. He played good enough to win, just couldn't score yet. I recall Datsyuk being one of the reasons why too... -
I think any contract signed that ends with the player being 41+ should not be accepted. Don't go back on any that are more than a year old, but all from this season should be looked at. Most players retire by 40 and so there's no reason to sign them until they're 47/44. Only a handful of players have ever made it that far. Mr. Howe being the best of them

Refs called less penalties in third period last year
SDavis35 replied to CenterIce's topic in General
Interesting how there's no statistical difference... but I remember watching and feeling as though they almost never called penalties in the 3rd. Oh well, it's not the amount of calls that bothered me as much as the amount of botched calls during the year. Any way the NHL releases a "yes our refs made mistakes during the season" stat sheet? -
(Clicked on this topic at "25 replies") Congrats D-mac.

And am Olympic gold medal, and consistent 50 win seasons, and no fear in swapping goaltenders when necessary, and the world championship gold... yea i don't think there's any reason to doubt it. Babs' character is awesome, and his strategies are proven winners.

Amazing how much his english has improved since then too eh? I watch this one for the lulz.

Gotta be honest, watching Luongo play in the Gold Medal game got me REAL nervous. Even with just 2GA it wasn't his best game. He's still got a lot to prove in pressure situations, and last year showed some inconsistencies if I remember correctly. Either way, he'd stick on my top 10... don't really know who else or where to put them on that list.

I really got hit by the bug tonight... watching 2008 highlights. Been through the 97/98 runs too. I think I've been spoiled by the last few springs, usually two months after we finish we're in training camp and almost finalizing rosters. It's summer break so all I've really got to do is work day and night, watch some baseball and hope time flies quick enough to get back to school and hockey season. I've got a good feeling about this year right now

and that they're not scored against us. Also note - 4 Wings in the top 10? Just adds to the bitter taste of that SJ series.
-
In my view, we were good enough to win last year (09/10) but we didn't get the breaks like we have the past few years. We have room to improve, certainly, but in the cap world there are always a handful of teams that will win with the right breaks, we were in that group last year, just couldn't get things to go our way.

The organization is based on class and the character of not only the players, but the rest of the staff. They show respect to everyone, they treat each other and their players as family. They also never panic, no matter how dire the circumstance I always see the confidence in their eyes. That's the identity I fell in love with, so yea, if the character/identity of the Red Wings was changed to represent what's wrong with the NHL, I wouldn't care for them anymore, regardless of what superstar player they drafted.
-
to be honest, i still think they need to call fewer penalties... or at least make it tougher to draw a penalty. If you just tap a guy on the wrist you get called for a hook... whereas it should be (imo) a hook IF the player slows down. It would make the league a whole lot tougher and in theory would reduce the flopping on every little thing.

He didn't fit the Red Wings style, I think that's because he was expected to play solid defensively as well as offensively. On Philly he's been successful, and shown why he was thought of so highly. I honestly think the puck has just been going in for him. He's just getting to the right spot at the right time, pretty simple hockey and it's been good for him. If he faces a physical, checking d-man, he's not going to be as successful. My opinion based on what I've seen in his goals.
-
This. I'd rather a person be alive and know someone cares about him than be dead thinking he wouldn't be missed.
-
Don't have any issues with them. O' Halloran is only bad when he's in Detroit, otherwise he's actually a pretty consistent ref. Compared to most of the referees, I wouldn't take anything less.

Montreal has 10+ cups more than any other franchise in the game... but I root for Montreal because they've always been my "East team". I'm not heartbroken if they lose, but I still like to see them do well, their history is great and just fun to watch those little no-name players making names for themselves.
-
Does anyone think the Eastern conference can win the Cup?
SDavis35 replied to Vladifan's topic in General
I'm rooting for Montreal (since the elimination of the Wings, 2nd fave team) but realistically I don't think there's an East team that will win. Can is a different story... this year's playoffs is exactly what it's been advertised as - History has been made, and likely still will be made. Anything can happen with the heart, drive and hot goaltender. -
I like Bert, I'll take him back. Multi-year is a little risky, hopefully we can get a non-verbal agreement that we'll keep him around so long as he wants to play. (until a point of course) I just don't want a 39/40 yr old retiring on us mid-contract or worst-case scenario, playing but sucking.

Percentage of starts next year for Howard and Osgood
SDavis35 replied to SouthernWingsFan's topic in General
I wanna see a real rotation - 55-27 for Howard. If we're in need of points, Babcock will play the hotter/sharper goalie, but I'm hoping he won't wear the goalie out. Regardless, I'm not expecting a division championship, just make the playoffs 4th or 5th again is probably where we deserve to be.
