Instead of Overeacting educate yourself on the Facts of Ott's Goal
TheOwl replied to a topic in General
If a video replay can't show the puck clearly across the line, it's not a goal. Why can't that be the rule? It's 2010 for f***s sakes. Why do we put so much trust in these refs? It's simple, video replays don't lie. It's so illogical how the NHL has screwed up this sport. I would go so far as saying EVERY penalty call can be challenged by a coach, and a replay must be watched. It's not hard, takes 15 seconds. At least they get the right call. -
Zetterberg and Datysuk have really been slacking off. These two guys are supposed to be two of the NHL's best forwards. Detroit has NO player other then Howard who can single handedly win a game. Franzen won't be a quick fix. If the Wings can get into the play-offs, maybe Franzen will be the difference. But he alone won't help the Wings make the play-offs. They need Kronwall, Williams, and Franzen, so some chemistry between the lines can begin. Every game Detroit is a one line team. The huge problem is, Detroit doesn't have any cap space to make a move. And who would they trade? Cleary? Homer? Flipulla? Moving any decent player off the roster won't make a difference. Pick any roster player, what could you possibly get that's better then what we have? Moving Rafalski would be a dream, but won't happen. Our D is pretty much set. You can't move Helm. You can't move Osgood, and you wouldn't get anything in return anyways. Detroit is set with this roster. And the pathetic thing is, ON PAPER, it's one of the best teams in the NHL. We don't need another scorer (once Mule gets back). We need the guys who we pay millions of dollars a year, to do what their paid to do. Datysuk doesn't get paid 6.7 million to back steal the puck. Zetterberg doesn't get paid 6 million to back check. These two players should be scoring, often and a lot. Look at Thorton, Heatley, Marleau. They don't have any excuses, they combine for 5 points nearly every night. Are these three really that much better then what we have? The injury excuse is pointless. We have capable players who are playing badly.

Here's the video of Carlyle's reaction. PRICELESS Giguere looks his wife just left him.

If Kovelchuk leaves Atlanta, the franchise will go bankrupt. He's the type of player people would pay to see. What reason in the world would someone have to go to an Atlanta game without Kovy? None. The team isn't that great, the supporting cast of players aren't very exciting, and the goaltender is terrible. Even a hardcore hockey fan wouldn't pay to see a Thrashers game without Kovy. I mean seriously. The only way this will work out is if it's a one for one deal. Kovy for another star player. Someone like Spezza, for example.

Lidstrom won't announce future plans till after season
TheOwl replied to FunkedUp's topic in General
Why not? I'm sure you are aware that Detroit spends more on it's 6-defensemen then ANY other team. For all that money, more then 1/3 of our total cap space, shouldn't we have the best D in the league? Why do we need to spend so much? Stuart and Kronwall would make a great top pair, both are improving substantially, and I would argue Kronwall-Stuart are playing better this year then Lids-Rafa. If Lidstrom retires, spending 6 or so million on another D-man would be a huge waste. How many top D-man does a team even need? 3 guys making over 3 million is enough. If we replace Lidstrom with an outside D-man, we are basically wasting our prospects. Ericcson is ready for top 4 duty, Meech kind of sucks, Kindl should be in the 3rd pairing next season. Rafalski's contract ends after next season. He's gone. That's the time to get a 6 million/yr D-man. Stuart and Kronwall will also get raises after next season. If we learned anything from last season, spending 1/3 of the cap on D-men, doesn't equal a good defensive team. The Wings lost the cup on scoring. The Wings could get a top 10 NHL forward using Lidstroms salary. Wings need scoring. Not another 6 million/yr defensemen. -
Mike Milbury made the worst trade of the decade: Yashin to the NYI, for Chara and the second overall pick that year (turned out to be Spezza). OR! Luongo and Olli Jokinen to Florida for Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha. Which is worst? He also drafted DiPetro when he could of chosen Gaborik or Heatley. Mike Milbury is the worst GM of the last decade. No contest.

Yeah happens all the time, but still wikipedia is just a few clicks away. Before Mason, I bet no one would get Raycroft as a calder winner. Brodeur was next interestingly. On a side note, whenever I see that Barret Jackman won the calder over Zetterberg, I almost throw up a little. What a god damn travesty. They should actually consider revoking the trophy. Can they do that? Stats: Jackman, D- 3G 16A 19P Zetterberg, F- 22G 22A 44P Nash, F- 17G 22A 39P What a joke. I mean seriously. He sucks. He sucked then, and he sucks now. Zetterberg and Nash lead rookies in points and goals. Give it to Nash at least, that would've been better. But Jackman. Holy crap, what were they thinking!!!!!

hahaha Don't know if you're joking so: Last season.
-
Howard will win the Calder by a landslide if he keeps these kind of numbers up. He's been playing OUTSTANDING!
-
Howard is a god. I love him.

It's too soon to give up on Leino. He probably won't clear waivers. Brunnstrom is likely to be less of a bust, but he may be out of reach, perhaps try and trade Leino and Lebda , straight up, or something. But other then that, give him a bit more time. Send Aby down, since he'll clear waivers, and trade who won't clear waivers for picks. Important to remember that we can recall guys in the playoffs, it's not like these 3 players will be gone for the rest of the season, but don't risk losing anyone through waivers.

Cherry is a clown. I'm a ******* Canadian and I don't want to see Canada win it every year. Real Canadians should be happy the USA won, at least it means the tournament is competitive. To be honest, that 16-0 bulls*** against Latvia, or whatever the hell it was, was a joke. Who could be proud of that? I don't want to see Canada blow out opponents. It's great the USA won, they won it fair and square, and it doesn't matter who played, who didn't play, or whatever. It was a close, entertaining game. Either team could of won. That's hockey, that's sports, that's entertainment.

Well said. But I also agree that if the KHL did start offering entry contracts to soon to be drafted players from the rest of Europe, the NHL would be drastically screwed. I can honestly say, and I'm sure a lot of people would agree, without a large percentage of European players, the NHL wouldn't be worth watching. Same goes for all sports really IMO. If you don't have the best players in the world, it's not worth watching. Which is the main reason I can't watch basketball, baseball or football.

Jimmy Howard to start VS San Jose; Brad May replaces Ville Leino
TheOwl replied to a topic in General
I can see why Babs is going with Howard, who is playing magnificently. But 8 straight starts is a bit excessive. That's a lot of pressure, and eventually he will have a bad game. Will it throw off his confidence? I think Osgood should start, just to see how badly he really wants to be the starter again. -
Detroit would make a big mistake if they didn't do something with Lidstroms cap money, assuming he straight out retires, or takes a huge salary cut. Bertuzzi could and probably should be re-signed at like 2.5 million, sign Helm, Howard etc to short and cheap extentions. Wings should keep around 5-6 million and sign a big name player. Why? Take 7 million of Lidstroms salary, give it to Kovelchuk, and sign all our rookies to cheap extensions. No one currently on the roster deserves a big pay raise anyways. Helm, Abby, Howard have earned extensions, but at no more money. Bertuzzi maybe deserves a 1 million raise, but other then that, Wings should have money to play with.
-
Did anyone catch this? lol Chicago wants Kovalchuk. They'll have like 8 players making over 5 million a season.
-
The Dats/Homer/Bertuzzi line should stay intact for the rest of the year if it keeps playing well. The one thing I dislike about Babcock is his constant line juggling. The chemistry within the lines is hugely important.
-
No one on this planet would trade Kovalchuk for Phaneuf. Phaneuf is over-paid and over-rated. Kovalchuk will surely re-sign in Atlanta anyways, or the franchaise will die.
-
The best system IMO is: Regulation, OT, SO Win = 2 points SO loss = 1 point OT, Regulation loss = 0 points Just make OT an extra 5 min of regular time, no extra point.
-
Osgood hasn't been great, Howard's been good, simple as that.

What Five Current NHL Players Do You Hate the Most?
TheOwl replied to GMRwings1983's topic in General
Hmmm.. 1. Crosby 2. Malkin 3. Marc-Andre Fleury 4. Gonchar 5. Luongo (over-rated, he thinks he's the best goalie on the planet) Crosby sucks and so do the Penguins. Bunch of bailed out losers. I hate teams who succeed off high draft picks. -
Why because he's played more games? In nearly every stat that has nothing to do with purely number of games played, Hasek and Brodeur are extremely close. Hasek also won 6 Vezina's, while Brodeur was playing in his prime, 3 Jennings, 2 Harts, record for post season shut-outs. Anyone would be far pressed to prove using stats, or anything, that Brodeur is better then Hasek. IMO Hasek was the more dominant goalie, while Brodeur has always played for a defensive/trapping team. No way you can say Brodeur is far better. It's like the morons who say Luongo is the best goalie on the planet.

I love you Bertuzzi, CONTRACT EXTENSION!

Detroit will only get a top 10 pick if they totally miss the play-offs. If this team misses the play-offs, it'll the biggest disaster in the last 10 years. How could a team with Datysuk, Zetterberg, and Lidstrom miss the play-offs. It doesn't matter that we have 5 or 6 useless forwards. Detroit has ZERO excuse for not making the play-offs this year, even with injuries this team should be a top 6 team. It's pathetic.
-
He's the most successful coach in the last 5 years, by miles. He's not going to panic now. December, maybe. I think new assistant coaches would be a good idea. Injuries is why this team is faltering. We have bottom 6 forwards wasting Datysuk and Zetterberg's talent. Bertuzzi is a major bust, Homer is one dimensional, Williams and Eaves kind of suck. We'll be fine once we get the Mule back.
