  1. If the salary cap stays the same for next year the Wings have 14.958 million to replace the 8 expiring contracts. (Z, Hossa, Franzen, Sammy, Hudler, Chelios, Kopecky, & Conklin)

Here are 2 scenarios for keeping Hossa OR keeping Franzen and Hudler without trading away Filppula or other bigger contracts.

Scenario 1: NO HOSSA OR SAMMY (In millions): Franzen & Hudler would also have to take a home team discount:

    6.08 - Zetterberg

    1.8 - Hudler

    0.6 - Helm

0.875 - Leino (RFA – not signed yet)

    3.4 - Franzen

0.716 – Howard or other backup goalie

    0.525 - Kopecky

0.9 - Ericsson (Lebda and Meech on the bench, Chelios retires to bench coach)

    -------

    14.896 mil = TOTAL

Scenario 2: NO HUDLER OR FRANZEN:

    6.08 - Z

6.0 – Hossa (similar creative deal like Z's)

    0.6 - Helm

    0.875 - Leino

1.2 - Sammy (if he comes back for same salary)

0.716 – Howard or other backup

    0.525 – Kopecky

    ______

15.996 mil = TOTAL (salary cap would have to increase by about $1 mil)

Can’t afford 8 defencemen (If Ericsson will be with Wings Lilja will have to be traded, Chelios retires. Ericsson is .30 less than Lilja) Only Meech on the bench.

So based on which way the Wings choose to go I don't think they will be signing any more players until they know what the salary cap will be. There is NO way the Wings can sign both Hossa and Franzen unless they trade away some big contracts like Filppula and someone else.

Hudler at 1.8a year is a pipe dream from the late 60's or early 70's.

  2. I have the Maine Black Bears website in my Favorites and I am constantly looking at what this young man is doing and from what I can gather I really think that the wings have another GEM in this fellow. He now has 20 points in 23 games and leads the team.

  3. The NHL is missing out on a golden opportunity.

Instead of the short stupid one's obsession with Cindy, why is the NHL not pumping Ovechkin as the savior of this sport?

    Consider:

    1) People get more excited about goals than assists. No offense to the great passers, but people don't sing about Gretzky's 160+ in a season. It's a great accomplishment. But, the refrain is always "92 won't be touched" or "he's not close to the pace to shatter Gretzky's 92, but he'll end up in the high 50's or 60's.

Ovechkin scores goals. More importantly, Ovechkin scores goals-- and loves it.

    Crosby's goal totals: 39-36-24-17* (as of 1/25)

    Ovechkin's goal totals: 52-46-65-31* (as of 1/25)

    2) Ovechkin is a better offensive talent. Crosby tore it up in the Q. Woopee. In the NHL, he's an elite talent, but not the best offensive force in the game. He is not even the best talent on his team (Malkin). Ovechkin, on the other hand, was not joined by an all-star talent in Washington until Semin broke out.

    3) Ovechkin is a showman. He can sell the game in two languages; his ability to win a crowd is amazing. Crosby is a milktoast, canned response pansy. You know what happens when someone interviews Ovechkin? I watch. I usually end up laughing a few times. You know what happens when someone interviews Crosby? I pause it after questions and can predict his response, verbatim.

    4) Country of origin is no longer a major concern. The NHL used to be a North American league, and that's why Crosby is being pushed. Newsflash: The NHL has players from major powers (Canada, US, Russia, Sweden, Finland, Czech Republic, Slovakia) and is growing in non-traditional talent (players from Austria, Switzerland, France, Slovenia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Ukraine, to name some). Ovechkin is a guy that we can trot out around the world and sell the NHL as a truly international product. Crosby is boring in every language.

    5) Ovechkin likes chicks. Crosby....doubtful. (Just kidding....maybe)

I totally agree that Ovechkin is the the one that should be showcased but in the world of Canada or TSN there is only Sid Crosby. The kid has talent but he needs a major slap to the head from his landlord to shut up and to become a man and be gracious when spoken to. Cindy if you would quit the whinning maybe more people would see that you do have talent.

  4. "Hey Bettman, No Wonder Your Son Is ***!"

"Hey Bettman, Stuff Your Ballot Boxes Up You Ass!"

Plane Ticket To Montreal - $700.00

A Ticket To The All Star Game - $400.00

Knowing The Best Team In The NHL Will Be Well Rested For The Playoffs - Priceless!

I think this is great, maybe mastercard will use it and make big money for sposorship Buttman.

  5. Sure criticize the guy, but people on this board blow things out of proportion calling for his head. I'm not the biggest Bettman fan but he sure as hell has done more good for the game then most people have come to realize.

What has he done for the league, he has watered the product down by expanding in areas where hockey is just a pastime ( Florida,California,Arizona; what do you see common with these areas that I do not, to me these areas mean sun and beaches not hockey. ) You seem to me to be to young to know what hockey was and should be. Expansion should have stopped after the WHL was brought in.

  6. Obviously, there was something to "work out"... because Crosby worked it out. Right? Apparently, this rule is "up for interpretation". Crosby showed that all one needed to do was make a simple phone call. I can't believe that you are implying that Bettman was ONLY willing to work with Crosby and that he is recieving special treatment. Maybe Bettman was willing to work with whoever called him. I know its more fun to create more reasons to hate Crosby... but c'mon.

For whatever reason, Holland refused to call Lidstrom and Datsyuk and give them a heads up. He felt it would be fine for them to just take the suspension and move on. All indications show that neither the Wings or Ken Holland cared enough to make any attempt at a resolution. That's their business.

Broken 16 I am tired of your endless bulls*** about Crosby; This has got to be the biggest ass kisser in the league and it seems he has a great companion in you. Maybe your nose is so far up Buttmans ass that you can not see the light but any one that is a fan of hockey understands that this is just a side show and that real hockey happens during the regular season and the playoffs so get off your high horse and say something meaningful for a change.

  7. Hudler has one of the quickest releases in the game and that is what makes him so good around the net. If you are ever at a game just watch Hudler at the end of the pregame skate stay back and fire countless pucks into the net from an area just off to the side of the net. I have watched him everytime he comes to Edmonton and he is always doing this and the guy is sniper from in close. He is a player that can not be let go as he has always been a high acheiver in every league that he plays in. He also told Detroit that he would prove all the other teams wrong for letting him slip to where Detroit got him in the draft and that he was happy to be a wing. I also remember in the Edmonton Journal that one of the sportwriters said that rich get richer when Detroit got Hudler at the draft. As you can tell I am a huge Hudler Fan.

  8. I would say Chris Neil (1.2 per year) or Jamal Mayers or both would be good in Red Wings uniiform. Personally I prefer Neil. So why not to make something like Meech or Lebda + Kopecky for Neil? Ottawa really needs some puck moving defenceman, Kopecky is there just to make cap room (not to mention that half of players on Ottawa roster is worse than Kopecky) and we need some grit. This trade would be good for both teams.

Our fourth line in play-offs would look like Neil - Helm - Draper...

I really like the idea of Chris Neil in a Red Wing uniform and the lost of Lebda and Kopecky for him and late round pick for us. I could see Chris Neil sticking with the Wings if this was to happen. I think that the Wings really will only be looking for some grit come playoff time although if they traded Flip it could free up money for Franzen and Hudler to be signed and maybe Hossa if we get rid of Sammy also.

  9. Personally I would like to see a rotation of some sort , but in the same breath if a goalie gets a shut out then he deserves to play the next game. The only problem is that if one goalie goes on a run and your playing him constantly then the other one can become rusty. I like the system right now but I can see Ozzie being the goalie of choice come playoff time due to experience and his demeanor. :judge:

  10. My vote is for Franzen due to him being a wing from day one and also with the signing of Franzen we will keep Hudler who is my FAV. and we will be able to bring up the boys from G.R. Hossa is very good but like other people have said he is a rental player and you have to look at the long run for the wings. We have so much talent coming up to replace the Maltbys,Samms,Drapes,Chelios and possibly Lebda. Then the DRWs will have cap space again.

  11. Well 4-0 against the 'Hawks... as if I needed another reason to be completely obsessed about seeing the Winter Classic.

I am so looking forward to this game also.

Final score 5-2 Wings scoring for wings Z with 2, Hudler, Kronwall and Dats with two coming off the power play. As for Chics who really cares who scores.

Wish I could have watched this game but I am working but I will be off at 06:00 a.m. for the big game. Sleep until 11:00 and then enjoy over coffee and minus 20 weather outside. Ottawa is leading 3-2 over Edmonton.

  12. I've got to admit, I know nothing about him. But he's producing like crazy so far this season and whenever I get the latest updates he's always put more points on the board. Another mid round steal by Detroit...?

I am the same I have his Maine hockey team in my favourites and when ever I take a look he seems to have scored a few more points. I am not sure about College hockey caliber but he is doing very well. This could be another outright steal for the WINGS>

  13. I am in total agreement that Hudler along with Cleary and Z would be one hell of a combination. The thing that gets me burnt up is that Babcock just can not let this happen because he thinks so highly of FLIP and does not want to give the proper icetime to Hudler because he believes that FLIP is better then HUDS, even though it does not show up in point total or I think in the plus and minus total and for sure on the powerplay. HUDS is a remarkable player that has shone at every level of hockey that he has played at. I really am worried that he will be signed by someone else as an RFA this year and that Holland may not be able to match.
