Zetterberg Extension: 12 years, $73 million

I was talking to a good friend of mine about Hudler and Filppula. We both agreed that Hudler, right now, is a better player. He can score and overall he's a tiny little fella that can really get you turned inside out. On the other hand, you have to think about why Filppula got a long term contract. Sure right now he's not scoring, but do you see him out there? He's a great passer, BUT he barely shoots. I bet Datsyuk and Zetterberg have told Filppula that you need to start shooting. Without shooting you can't score. Once and a while you'll see Filppula dangle around the defense or when the pucks in the corner he'll come out with it. Filppula is still developing and has a bright future. Remember what Zetterberg and Datsyuk did when they first entered the league, all passing and barely shooting. That's what Filppula looks like right now, an early Zetterberg and Datsyuk. Trading Filppula would be a mistake. Hudler is a great player and I give him credit for having a good season so far. As said before, he can score and he'll sometimes turn you inside out. BUT he's small. The guy is 5'9 and I worry about him sometimes when he's on the ice. Sometimes he'll cough up the puck, not often, but sometimes when he's in the corners. Personally I'd let Hudler walk if we can't do anything.

Zetterberg Extension: 12 years, $73 million

Hossa will sign around the same amount like Zetterberg. We're looking at the same amount that Filppula makes to re-sign Franzen. Hudler might be the one to walk on this one. Look on the bright side, Zetterberg is staying in Detroit for the rest of his career, Hossa loves the Red Wings style of hockey; European puck possession, Franzen knows the reason why he scored all those goals because of the guys he played with. Marian Hossa should be a done deal and Franzen looks to be in the range of Filppula, like stated above. Anyways, Ken Holland nice work locking up Zetterberg for $6 million a season.

    Hossa or Lids

I knew I would expect that from you. My way of thinking of the situation is telling Zetterberg if you take less we'll be able to sign Hossa. Hossa wants to win and is comfortable where he is now. He loves the European style hockey and feels like this is the team that will fulfill his dreams of winning a Stanley Cup. Zetterberg is going to be the captain either way. Datsyuk is not going to be the captain, he can barely speak English. How are you suppose to do press conferences? You remember last year who was sitting with Lidstrom? Zetterberg. Draper is not getting it, all he does is face offs.

    Hossa or Lids

??? Why do you think signing Zetterberg is taking longer then expected? The plan is to convince Z that if you take less, because Hossa is willing to, that your chances of winning are going to be increased.

    Hossa or Lids

Hossa will be on the Wings next season...

    Zetterberg's Contract

They're trying to work out a deal where Zetterberg and Hossa will be on the Wings long term...no joke.

    Datsyuk or Fedorov

If it weren't for Fedorov we wouldn't have won those Stanley Cups in the 90s. No Fedorov = No Russian Five. Remember when the only good player was Steve Yzerman? They never won s*** until Fedorov came. Not to mention they made it to the playoffs when Fedorov came.

    Datsyuk or Fedorov

Fedorov. Too much to say about this legend of a player. I wonder when his number will be retired at the Joe.

Chris Osgood- What do we do?

I don't know what else to say about him. What's happened to him? I know he's an average goaltender, but if you give up 4-6 goals a game there's an issue. Osgood's got 3 regulation loses, but all of those he should have won. The San Jose game was a disaster. Tired Red Wings team plays solid offense and Osgood's screws it up by giving up 2 breakaway goals. I just don't know what to say. Should they bench him and tell him to get it together? Maybe trade him? Did the defense bail him out last year in the playoffs or was he in the zone? Indifferent right now. Discuss.

1/20 GDT: Red Wings 3 at Coyotes 6

I say Wings win it 5-0 Filppula, Hudler, Zetterberg, Datsyuk, and Lidstrom.

Chris Osgood- What do we do?

When your goalie gives up 6 goals, the team will just stop trying.

    Franzen Injury

When Filppula is on a line with Cleary, he will not score. Why? When he passes to Cleary he'll hold onto the puck and will not pass to anyone until he's mashed into the boards and coughs the puck up. On the other hand, when Cleary is on a line with Hossa and Zetterberg he actually passes. As I said, Filppula is always looking for the open man such as Hudler. He still developing as a player. Filppula is only 24 years old and Franzen is 28, of course there will be a big difference. Filppula reminds me of the rookie Zetterberg, always passed. I think Datsyuk will help Filppula like Hull did with him. You wanted proof that Filppula can score. First NHL goal , drives to the net. Filppula may have less goals and points, but keep in mind Cleary was a first rounder.

    Franzen Injury

Filppula is underrated and can score. His style of hockey that he played in Finland was "look for the open man". Every time Filppula has the puck coming into the zone what does he do? Stop and look for an open man driving to the net. Filppula plays on the penalty kill and sadly doesn't get power play time. Filppula's depth and potential is great and I'm glad we re-signed him. Then again I'm quoting a guy who has a Dan Cleary sig.

Chris Osgood- What do we do?

True, I was pissed last night. Staurt f***ed up on the first one and helpless Flippula never gives up. The second goal Osgood should have redeemed himself.

Chris Osgood- What do we do?

You can't even do that, he lost those two games in Dallas plus the opener of the season against the Maple Leafs.

    Keeping "The Big 3"

I have a feel that a deal is being worked out with Zetterberg that will basically allow Hossa to stay. Their agents and them know that the cap will go down and they both want to be in a situation where they have a chance to win. You'll be surprised on what's going to happen. I believe Zetterberg and Hossa will be on the Wings next season and Franzen will be too.

    Keeping "The Big 3"

True. I'm trying to find the article I read yesterday concerning the Zetterberg and Hossa situation. I think it was the Free Press and said Hossa wants to remain a Red Wing for the long term because he likes the system they play and he's playing with players who in 4-5 years in their prime. I still have yet to re-find another article that stated Hossa wants Zetterberg to be signed first until the Wings deal with him. I think the plan is working out a deal with Zetterberg for $6.7 million, same as Datsyuk, and Hossa to take that as well. Franzen will probably demand $4 million and as for Hudler...who knows.

    Keeping "The Big 3"

I wouldn't trade Flippula, he's young and has something in him. You see all of those great passes he makes to Hudler and usually end up as a goal. Flippula can deke if he wants to, but he's still learning the ropes of the NHL. Keep him.

    Keeping "The Big 3"

-First time poster- It's going to a big decision for Ken Holland to make, and we all know Z, Hoss, Mule, and Huds are players that we don't want to lose. Unfortunately, we can't keep them all. In my opinion, get Zetterberg re-signed first and renegotiate with Lidstrom about his contract. If we want to keep some players there's going to have to be a pay cut or someone traded. Hossa seems like he's liking it in Detroit and his game has really showed. Franzen, to me, seems like a player that will turn it on when he wants to, but don't get me wrong he's one heck of a player. He drives to the net well and is becoming a natural in front of the net. Hudler is having a great season. A great breakout season and winning a Cup boosted his confidence big time. Huds is a great puck handler and always looks for the open man. It's going to be hard. Conclusion: Sign Zetterberg and try to work out something with Hossa. Talk to Lidstrom about how much he's making and see if you can a way to keep at least two players. Franzen is great and Hudler has a great future. It's going to be a big loss, but remember who we have in the AHL. Ville Leino is incredible and having Flippula on the Wings will build some chemistry since they're both Finnish. Jonathan Ericksson is also another player I'm looking forward to see on Defense, he's huge!
