They didn't get lucky they got good. They were bad, they drafted good, then it came together this year. Next year maybe not, what with the cap and all.

I went to a couple games back then, why wouldn't you want a chance to win a new car at the price of a cheap ticket. Newer fans don't remember the car giving away days to get people in the building. Hell most teams wouldn't survive the good times if not for the bandwagoners. That extra money helps.

No offense to hockey but Jan. 1 is college football day. Has been, always will be. I look at the WC as a gift to regular fans. Real hockey fans will watch the WC(with remote in hand) but casual fans watch football, that's what makes them casual. The NHL can do whatever but it won't make inroads on that particular day. If I thought it mattered I'd choose Pitt and Wash too, people who don't watch hockey know who Crosby and Ovie are. Back in the '80's casuals knew who Gretsky was, same thing. They could dig up Rocket Richard and match him up with Gordy and it wouldn't get Bettman a long term contract with NBC or ESPN, but it's his job to try I guess.

It's the opinion of many that Sheed caused the Pistons to lose to the Spurs the next year so he's even there. I've always thought that if it needed to be heavily debated then it probably doesn't go up. I'd say Lids for sure, after that it gets iffy. I'd put Ozzie there too but can see people arguing against him. Federov would be there if not for leaving town, there are many who won't forgive him for that.
