Marchenko recalled from GR... Ouellet sent down

Lashoff being waived makes me think they can't find a new home for Kindl, or they're trying to assess their assets before pulling the trigger on a move. Maybe both? Maybe I have no clue what's going on... that's probably it.

    Franzen on IR

What kind of math are you doing? Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Weiss, Franzen, Nyquist, Tatar, Helm, Abdelkader, Sheahan, Jurco, Miller & Glendening make 13 guys... Cleary's spot opens up the spot for Pulkkinen. How did Tatar begin last season? As a healthy scratch, working his way into the line-up. There's no reason to suggest that the same won't be done here. I'd even venture to say that the Red Wings could let Andersson go, letting Callahan or Ferraro take his spot on the roster. They've let RFA go before.

LA puts Mike Richards on waivers

I usually hate these "a source has told the [insert media outlet here]" rumors, but it would make sense. Calgary has the space, and they've been open to taking on bad contracts for assets in the past. http://www.calgarysun.com/2015/01/28/flames-talking-to-kings-about-richards?

Helm already gets Tatar in enough trouble. You get Mike Richards in Detroit and Tomas is in AA within three weeks.

Ansar Khan‏@AnsarKhanMLive Lines: Nyquist-Zetterberg-Abdelkader Tatar-Datsyuk-Helm Glendening-Sheahan-Weiss Miller-Andersson-Cleary So, does this mean that Glendening is officially the new Dan Cleary? I wonder if Bear is hella jealous of Luke...

LA puts Mike Richards on waivers

Was looking around HF Boards, and apparently reps from both Toronto and Edmonton have said there's no interest on their end.

LA puts Mike Richards on waivers

Wasn't Calgary offering to take on some bad contracts in exchange for picks, prospects, etc. during the off season? Wonder if they'd be willing to take Richards.

Next up, Jakub Kindl on waivers?

I'm pretty sure Toronto is up against it, cap wise. Unless they're unloading Clarkson, I can't see them going after Richards. I think a team like Edmonton makes sense, or perhaps even Arizona with Vermette likely to leave. Depends on their internal cap. I think they're trying to shed money, at the moment.

    Give Patrick Hersley a shot?

Fair enough. I understand and appreciate the idea of picking up an asset for free - just not sure it works here right now. If Detroit was in a position to take a look at him, I would be receptive for sure. The reality is that this team has eight NHL-level defenders. The hope (at least mine) is that they can move Kindl for Ouellet. While we don't have that PP guy right now, I believe we have him in either Sproul or Jensen. One of those two is most likely going to be up for the 2016-17 season. So really, Hersley would have a one-year window to prove that he's better than what we already have. I just think it's highly unlikely that he'd find a fit here. It would definitely be a Holland move to check him out, if this team's situation was a little different. I think there are quite a few other teams who might be able to take a look at him. Perhaps a team like Chicago could take a look at him, or maybe (with the loss of Voynov) Los Angeles. Just can't imagine him finding a spot in Detroit.

    Give Patrick Hersley a shot?

Isn't that more the exception, rather than the rule? And not to nitpick, but does Hudler really apply to this situatuion? He chose to go over because of issues with his contract negotiations - it wasn't an issue with breaking into the NHL. Thinking about players who came over, then never returned... just in Detroit's system alone: Dick Axelsson Daniel Larsson Johan Ryno Mattias Backman (Possibly?) Not saying it's not possible, but I'd imagine that if Hersley were to come over, he'd be going to a team where he would have a better chance of getting into the line-up. It's not every player's dream to play in the NHL. Which leads me to ask (Ekmanc), has he shown any indication that he even wants to come to the NHL? Just wondering if this is a "he's got solid stats overseas, he should come over" or "he's considering coming over next season, we should try to sign him"?

    Give Patrick Hersley a shot?

Pretty much in agreement with all that's been said here. It's not a bad idea, but there's simply no room (8 NHL defenders if you include Ouellet). Even if he did agree to start the season in the AHL, it's going to be a critical year for Sproul, Marchenko and Jensen. Assuming none of them are brought up ahead of schedule, next season is going to go a long way in determining their future in Detroit. As such, I would imagine that management wants to give them as much ice time and as much of a chance to prove themselves as possible.

    Time for Teemu?

Putting Tatar in a package for an elite defender is the only thing that would make sense, IMO. He's on pace for about 35ish goals... how many guys in the league score 35 goals, anymore? Last year, eight guys put that number up - this year ten guys are on pace to hit that mark. Whatever you're getting back in terms of a forward is probably not worth whatever else you're including in the package.

Do we need a trade to get our offence going ?

So then what is Pulkkinen's potential in terms of points? I'd gauge him at around 25-30G and 20-25A, especially considering he'll most likely be a Top 9, not Top 6 players on this team. Seems like it wouldn't be mortgaging the future to include him in a package, either.
  16. I'm kind of looking back and trying to find comparable situations to this one, trying to gauge Green's value. These aren't really guys in the same mold as Green in terms of playing style, but some veteran, pending UFA's got the following: Andrew MacDonald went for Matt Mangene, 2014 3rd and 2015 2nd. Jay Bouwmeester went for Reto Berra, Mark Cundari 2013 or 2014 1st and 2013 conditional 4th. Johnny Oduya went for 2013 2nd and 2013 3rd. Zidlicky went for Kurtis Foster, Nick Palmieri, Stephane Veilleux, 2012 2nd and 2013 conditional. (though, I think Zidlicky still had one year on his deal) Not sure what Detroit's version of these packages would be, but I thought it was interesting to gauge the value of defenders in a similar situation. Obviously, these guys aren't Mike Green, but I was actually underwhelmed by some of the returns.

Do we need a trade to get our offence going ?

Just took a look and he had 10 points through 13 games in December, which is obviously impressive. He seems to have slowed down since (can't expect him to keep that up), which is what I was getting at. He had two points heading into December, so all things considered, it's good to see that he picked it up.

Do we need a trade to get our offence going ?

Unlikely. If we did, would they impress? My guess is that Marchenko is more "NHL ready" than Sproul at this point. Maybe some of the bigger GR fans here can correct me, but I believe Sproul has had a fairly inconsistent season. I think I read something about his defensive partners being swapped around a bit. Have Paetsch-Jensen and Evans-Sproul been the pairings lately?

    Time for Teemu?

Kip pretty much hit on all the points I would make here. The group of forwards will be a bit cluttered in the next few seasons, Pulkkinen has some value in the marketplace, etc. It's not about wanting to move the guy, it's about his perceived value and availability vs. other assets. While it may not be likely, if Holland's going after a piece he really wants, does he move someone like Mantha, or does he move Pulkkinen if the other team is willing to "come down" on their return? There's a place in between the players this team should not be willing to move, and the ones they should be willing move. Teams are going to have high interest in Nyquist, Tatar, Mantha and Larkin. I'd imagine there's very little interest in Kindl, Tvrdon, Frk and Nastasiuk. Someone like Pulkkinen lies in between those two groups of guys. Again, it's not about liking or not liking a player. I like Pulkkinen. This is about pure, objective trade value vs. other assets this team has in stock.
  22. I was conceding that it sucked giving up Jarnkrok for a rental. While we differ on how much value Smith has, we can agree that moving an asset for a rental player isn't worth it in this team's current situation. Holland's recently admitted he thinks he paid too much: http://www.theredwingsfeed.com/red-wings-gm-holland-promises-not-overpay-trade-deadline/# To the second point, this makes me think Babcock is high on Green: http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2015/01/red_wings_begin_second_half_of.html I'd say that's some nice praise. Things can change, obviously. Perhaps Green would come here, play poorly and dive headfirst into the dog house. At the very least, I think it shows Babcock has a desire to add an offensive guy to this roster. If it's not Green, it's someone else if a similar mindset/playing style.
  23. Given his time spent there, I don't think he's going to say he wants to leave. Washington is going to be hard pressed to keep a guy who's 5th in ice time, and probably getting close to what he's being paid now. They've got some cap relief with guys like Ward and Erskine (should they part ways) coming off the books, but they've also got to give raises to Holtby, Johansson, Kuznetsov and possibly Beagle and Fehr (should they decide to keep them around). Regardless of whether or not Detroit has a chance to get him, I can't see him staying in Washington.

    Time for Teemu?

I think it depends on how they feel about his play during the call-up. It's going to be tight up front in the next few seasons, so something has to give. The pieces I would like to see moved before him would be a tough sell, as other teams probably don't want to take on older players term. Ultimately, I can see him being moved as part of a package for a defenseman. If it happens, it's almost certainly going to be viewed as an overpayment.
