12/10 GDT: Red Wings 2 at Panthers 3 (SO)

I still don't mind seeing Abs in that role - I think he does it well. He has a role, he knows his role... and he shuts his mouth. That being said, I'm most excited to see what that 3rd line can do. Really hope they light it up.

    2014-2015 NHL salary cap projection

This is what worries me the most. I don't want to see guys like Sheahan, Ferraro and/or Callahan left out because the team has extra cap space for veterans. I can really see Holland keeping Quincey over Lashoff, and using Almquist as the #7 guy. This would offend me a lot less than bringing back Sammy and Cleary, but I'd still prefer for Quincey to be done with the team. It's not like Lashoff is standing out, but with guys like Ouellet, Sproul, Backman and Marchenko on the way, I don't see the point in hanging onto Q.
  3. So uh... I'm just going to leave this here. Reading the last page, I'm not sure I'm in the right thread, but here it goes: Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Nyquist Mule-Weiss-Alfie Abs-Helm-Tatar Miller-Sheahan-Ferraro Andersson, Callahan Kronner-Ericsson Smith-DeKeyser Kindl-Lashoff Almquist Howard Gustavsson This is my hope for next season's team. Keep in mind, it has Weiss playing well, and Smith taking a step up. I know this roster won't likely be close to the cap, but I think it gives a good chance for the young players to grow, even if we leave some money on the table. Perhaps they could upgrade at center somehow. Given management's track record, I doubt they let that many vets go, but it's what I'd like to see.

Do Quincey and Smith have a future in Detroit?

Smith's going nowhere, as others have said. Quincey could be interesting. I'm not sure he's as "done" as some people think. If Detroit could package Kindl in a deal with another team for a forward, I think they might be up for moving him instead. I also don't think the Wings are willing to lose Almqvist for nothing. My personal desired defensive core for next season would look something like: Kronwall-Ericsson Kindl/Smith-DeKeyser Smith/Kindl-Lashoff Almqvist I'd love for the team to move on from Quincey, but I'm not entirely sure they will. Going forward, I think the team has a ton of depth on the back-end that we probably won't see for awhile, but I think pairings like Ouellet-Sproul, Backman-Marchenko, McKee-Jensen, etc will pop up eventually. I'm really excited about the depth on defense.

I tend to agree. Furthermore, I don't see why they should break up two of the other lines, either... especially Abs-Helm-Alfie. If anything, I think maybe going with Weiss-Dats-Bert, Miller-Andy-Tatar would be worth a shot, switching players around if need be. I see no reason to break up the two lines that are firing on all cylinders, though.

What Does This Team Need More/Most?

For my money, it's a righty on the blueline with some really good offensive instincts. I think getting the puck up ice, tape-to-tape passing would do wonders for the team's transition game. Would also help a lot on the PP, I'm assuming. I think Sproul fits this mold, but I'd want someone a lot more complete, obviously. I really think this team has all the tools up front, but are so many issues with "identity" because of how often the lines get shuffled/shifted. If the team could just find some chemistry and stick with it, I don't think they need to tinker with the forwards much at all. Big if.

I get it, and maybe my anger should be directed at Holland for putting the team in this mess in the first place, but I'm just unbelievably irked at seeing Cleary next to Pavs. I don't get all that angry with this team and it's management - in fact, I have a hard time remembering ever going on a little mini-rant like I did. I just hate this, "prove yourself and you'll be in the line-up" mentality when it simply isn't true. It's not a case of the best players playing, and it's not a case of guys earning more ice time based on play. If that were the case, Dano would be riding the pine. Nyquist's status does make him a victim, so maybe my anger is more directed at Babs' line-up. You're hampering your best playmaker on the team with a plug... it's just absurd to me. I understand that Nyquist is in this spot because of Holland, but I think Tatar is getting the shaft here, too. I get spreading out talent, but at this point , I'd much rather bump Sammy up with Abs-Helm and see Miller-Andersson-Cleary. I just don't get what adding Cleary to the top line does for this team.

It's seriously just really starting to piss me off seeing anything the management of this team says to the press... "(Nyquist's) job, and no different tonight if I were him, he's still allowed to go back to the minors, is be so good tonight that you put so much pressure on the coach and the manger that they have to do something about it." - Mike Babcock Are you f****** kidding me!? So what about all the dead weight on this team that's allowed to roam free because they're "warriors" and provide a "veteran presence". These "kids" have put pressure on management, but you've turned a blind eye. Dan Cleary is on the top line!? Are you slow, Mike? Tatar has proven he's got better hands than 70% of the team, and Dan f****** Cleary is on the top line!? Great way to handle the future of your team. "You better score a hat trick tonight, otherwise you get to go rot in the AHL." Meanwhile, the dynamic veteran duo of Dan Cleary and Mikael Samuelsson have a whopping 2 goals over 31 games played. If players in the draft aren't already weary about being taken by Detroit, they should be after this year. They're not just letting these kids get overripe anymore, they're flat out misusing them. I'm seriously beginning to think that management is so arrogant that they won't fix something until it's too late. EDIT: Put Babcock's quote in Comic Sans font because it seemed appropriate.

I definitely like the idea of Sheahan and Ferraro on the team ASAP, but I wonder how likely the team would be to move Andy. Babs loves him. I guess we'll have to see who is let go out of the veteran players. I'd be interested to see something like: Z-Dats-Alfie Mule-Weiss-Nyquist Tatar-Sheahan/Andy-Abdelkader Miller-Helm-Glendening/Ferraro Scratches: Glendening/Ferraro/Andy/Sheahan This is assuming that guys like Bert, Sammy and Cleary are let go, obviously.

Don't see what this has to do with Martin. Holland's the one inking bad deals with veteran players.

Honestly, this is how I feel. It's not an ideal situation, but at least Andersson's shown chemistry with Tatar in the past. It might not be pretty, but it's what they've got right now.

Who is the Most Underappreciated Red Wing?

Before opening the thread, Miller, Bertuzzi and Abdelkader all popped into my mind. I'm going with Miller, just because the guy doesn't do anything flashy but can serve as a very solid 4th liner. Not the fastest skater, but is willing to block shots and limits his mistakes. With Bert, I know how streaky he can be so I'm not going to fully praise him just yet... but the guy's playing some solid hockey right now. Doesn't hurt that he's playing with D & Z, but he's showing some skill in his own right.

Nope. It was Cleary who Logo Hunter nailed in the jaw. Edit: Nev beat me to it . I forgot he injured Datsyuk, too. Was that an ankle or was it a wrist injury for Pavs?

Nyquist taking things in stride, with class

I personally think the only way we see Gus back up is if there's a real plan in place to move someone, or if someone's done for the year. They're not going to call him up for two games without making sure he'll stick. Poorly planned out, he would be exposed to waivers - I'd like to think Kenny's got a little more sense than that. He definitely deserves to be on this team, though. It's a shame.

    Emmerton on Waivers

So, apparently this is the explanation for Coreau and Ouellet being called up: "The Wings also needed to add defenseman Xavier Ouellet and goalie Jared Coreau to the 23-man roster in order to reach the cap limit. In order for teams to get cap relief from long-term IR, a team must use up all of its cap space and roster spots first." http://www.dailytribune.com/sports/20130930/red-wings-notebook-team-makes-roster-moves
  20. Jesusberg

    Emmerton on Waivers

If that were the case, he'd have a combo of like Glendening (575K) and Nedomlel (612K). Coreau and Ouellet are making 925K and 894K, respectively. I'm pretty confused, personally.
  21. Jesusberg

    Emmerton on Waivers

I don't really have much to say, other than the look of that bottom six screams, "We've made mistakes".
  22. Jesusberg

    Emmerton on Waivers

Yeah, they're clearly done with the "EmDog" experiment. I really think only Glendening should be up with the team - Riley's going to benefit way more playing in a line with Jurco in GR. Big minutes, focus on offensive production. Glendening's really looked solid in a 4th line role, imo. I like what he brings.
  23. Jesusberg

    Emmerton on Waivers

As do I. I think he'd at least have a shot somewhere else, that way. Detroit's got Helm, Andersson, Sheahan, Glendening and maybe Aubry who can play center in our bottom six. There's simply no room for Emmerton, and Glendening has clearly outplayed him all camp/pre-season.

I'm just hoping that Tatar and Gus are the best players on the ice tonight - make it really tough for management to ignore/demote either one of 'em.

CBC for Canada, not sure about the States. Assuming it will be streamed all over, though. I really hope Gus and Tatar kill it tonight.
