9/30 Exhibition GDT : Red Wings 7 at Penguins 2

Between their announcers claiming that a Penguin was slew footed by Ferraro (I think?) and going on about how they've been "turned to the right all game", I've certainly enjoyed them. I could be mistaken, but I think they said "Larkinnen" at one point.

Still hoping the NHL's definition of "local" expands for the game. Won't hold my breath, though.

I hate to be a pessimist, but when the injury bug hits, I think they'll call him up. Edit: I'm not saying he didn't do a solid job against Bergeron. I just think he needs to really stand out in order to push someone out of the lineup. Management is already on record saying that he needs to be a go-to guy in order to start in Detroit. As well as he played against Pittsburgh, it was also a different level of competition.

I was/am thinking the same thing, but if Helm's out it could change the situation. If Blashill thinks he's outplayed one of Jurco or Pulkkinen, we could see something like: Abdelkader-Zetterberg-Nyquist Jurco/Pulks-Richards-Tatar Sheahan/Pulks-Larkin-Franzen Miller-Glendening-Ferraro Andersson, Jurco/Pulkkinen I'm sure it seems unlikely, but the way they're treating Larkin seems different. For the record, I'd rather he start in Grand Rapids and do the whole "big fish in a small pond" thing at first. Really, the way he's jumped from level to level in the last year worries me a little. He's played six games in the AHL. I almost think it would be worse for him to make the roster, then deal with being sent down. If he's sent down, it's more of a, "well this is the way things work in Detroit."

I was 100% certain they'd be sending him down soon, now I'm not so sure. This is going to be his fourth preseason game with the team. If he has a quiet game like he did in Boston, I can see them sending him down. If he plays like he did against the Penguins like he did last time...

Agree with both of your proposed changes. If Blash is really taking a look at Jurco, let him play with offensive linemates. Run a third line of Nosek-Glendening-Ferraro. Swapping Smith for Jensen - more than anything - is because it drives me nuts to see the team able to pull off a lefty-righty combo for each pair, but not do it.

Who Do You Think Will Lead the Wings In Scoring

Nope. He's been pretty invisible, TBH.

This is my line of thought, too. Only, I think Nyqust will lead in PPG and PPP.

It's pretty messed up that fans are running around like it's 1999 and Napster just blew up.

I know Ken Kal is doing a radio broadcast of the game, but I thought only people in Boston's market could get the stream? "Due to broadcast restrictions, the game is limited to the Boston market and is unable to be streamed out of market. There is no radio broadcast of the game. The live video feed will be presented without play-by-play audio."

Based on Holland's decisions in the past and his recent quotes from the interview with Custance, I can’t see Larkin starting in Detroit. The Red Wings simply have too many forwards right now. It's not even an Andersson issue. Honestly, I expect Andersson to be waived eventually. Larkin's got other young players ahead of him who would have to pass through waivers. Something catastrophic would have to happen for him to start in the NHL.

They're similar in some ways, but Petry's deal occurred at the trade deadline where a bottom-feeding team moved a top-four defenseman to a team shoring up for a playoff run. That's usually when you see those UFA's moved. There aren't many teams right now willing to take on a defenseman, I think (perhaps Boston, because of their injury situation). If Detroit intends to move him, I'd rather they do it now. Assuming they're in good shape at the trade deadline, they probably don't move him. Also, I think spending a season on the third pair with Kindl or Smith is going to knock his value down some - he's coming off a solid season as DeKeyser's partner right now.

It's all good. I was just confused. Though, I wonder how they're going to get under once Datsyuk returns. It hadn't occurred to me that they might go with 13 forwards if they don't have any other options.

9/24 Exhibition GDT : at Red Wings 6, Pittsburgh Penguins 1

Eh? Why would both get waived? Detroit only needs to waive one of them, unless you think Cleary or Callahan will be the 14th forward? Unless you're thinking they'll run 13 forwards to get under the cap once Pavel returns?

Yes, but not every one has seen that. Not every one knows he possesses the playmaking skills that he does. During his time in the NHL, he didn't really show what he has during the preseason. It's fair to say that last year, he showed himself to be a little one dimensional at the NHL level. It's fantastic that he's looked good so far, but let's see how he fares during the regular season. It's a very promising start. I thought he looked fantastic last night. Last I read, Helm was feeling good. Said he was having some headaches, but was going to ride the bike. His goal was to be ready for October 9th. As far as I know, there hasn't been an update about how he reacted to the bike. It could go either way, really... If he has a setback, I expect him to be out for a little bit. That would certainly give Jurco and Pulkkinen an opportunity.

That's just it though, right? Sometimes he has to defer from shooting. Last season, he took the whole "when you get the puck, shoot" thing a little too seriously. He shot the puck whenever he had it. If he can show some more poise with the puck, go to the "hard areas" a little more and elect to pass a bit more (after all, he broke Selanne's assist record in the Finnish Elite League) then he'll be fine. As far as him starting in the lineup, I think there should be some question. Who knows what Blash is thinking. If Helm isn't healthy for opening night, Pulkkinen getting into the lineup means Andersson's out and Glendening goes back to 4C. If Helm's healthy, that means he's battling with Jurco for a spot. Simply put, Detroit has too many forwards right now.
