Ok proves my point your star players can be injured anyways without an enforcer and an inforcer isn't goign to stop big hitters like Kronwall, Brown, Phaneuf, Sarich, Stuart ect from taking out star players with clean physicality. Ive been to plenty of games and seen plenty of fights live, im not against fighting, I think seeing a guy get pummeled after he makes a dirty play is one of the most amusing things, I just think it is comical how some of you think that the sport is fighting on ice and not hockey and only fighting and seeing big guys out there "enforcing" is entertaining. I think anybody should be beat after a dirty hit but the way you make fighting seem like the crown jewel of all hockey is just silly considering it is one of the most complex sports. I think most people enjoy fighting but true hockey fans appreciate more than just that, who cares how many people want to be conformists and not watch hockey? Having played it and watched it for years and also playing and watching other sports until I got bored of every single one, I know hockey is the best whether there is 12 fights and a line brawl a game or not, and I know people like you wish for such a thing. If the Wings can win a championship without a first class goon, why not? The NHL doesn't revolve around the 4 people in the world who are solely obsessed with fights, I think most people are happy fight or no fight. Like I said I appreciate the fights but it gets old with the few people in here that solely focus on them and have to defend any type of fighting at all cost.

a lot of people took out crosby, I remember one night when Orr hit him liek 5 times. And how about when stuart have him his birthday spanking in Game 6 of the finals? Where was laraque or roberts? I have a whole archive of big hits on crosby from last year. The funniest was seeing crosby go after ballard after a clean check, where was Godard on that one? Not that he needed to be.

Ill agree with Stortini a bit but I don't think that many guys are afraid of him, Godard doesn't do much for me he seems to take selfish penalties, Cote, idk he jsut looks lost out on the ice similar to Downey and has a smoking hot wife if i recall.

Cause there probably too busy picking their noses in the corner. And out of those Stortini is the only one that actively hits on a regular basis. And what's up with Cote he trains MMA? I mean comon dude at least learn how to hold a hockey stick first.

Exactly the guys who support fighting right now support the novelty of it, it is nothing like it was before, there is minimal enforcing going on these days and most of the time we see it after clean hits which is just foolish and always has been.

Well if you've seen a vid of him vs the ducks when a few guys took liberties on wild non fighters the crowd is going nuts chanting his name then he goes over to Getzlaf and just stares at him, i'm sure Getzlaf was holding his poop in and also Boogaard uses his body to crush pelvises when he hits, Downey is the one being crushed when he goes to make a hit. I agree theres not much variance in the enforcer role but at least Boogaard makes use of what he has. As does a guy like tootoo although tootoo is a worthless dirtbag that is the epitome of why dunces who cant play hockey (granted tootoo has some skill but doesn't care to use it which in essence make him less of a player, instead focusing on bloodying or injuring the opposition) don't belong in the nhl only to injure as many people as possible with borderline hits, and with the instigator rule it is harder for enforcing to be used properly, instead all we see now is guys cowering out of fights after dirty plays and simply going for the pointless youtube fight at center ice. If your gonna try to injure a guy at least make it a clean hit and not a suckerpunch or any other cheapshot you get so often from the goons.

I don't that's why I prefer guys like Lucic, but I think Downey was such a thrill for everyone that they got blinded, I never thought much of how much of a detriment he was til he was gone, I guess that's easy to do though, I just love razzling the very few people that think he or any other player like him is a god vital to the nhl. I think enforcing is a good thing for the nhl but I think there should be a trend of either signing a beast like Boogaard to stare people down or find a way to teach the smaller "tough guys" some skill.

I think they like him as a locker room guy, but the fact that he has bounced aroudn shows nobody wants to keep him around for long, I may be understating his entire role but i do think he has great fighting capabilities but for real his asset as a fighter is completely overshadowed by his troublesome hockey playing abilities. He adds 1 dimension, if you have room for that fine, but I think most NHL teams don't need that kind of player. Especially now as more people begin to play hockey and you see guys with skill (Carcillo - wish he woudl use it, Lucic, Getzlaf, ect..) who can also fight, if a GM is building a team you go with that, and if you need a heavyweight to beat the s*** out of someone who cheapshots a star player there are plenty of large guys out there that do more than just fight. If the nhl rids itself of players like downey in favor of more skilled players who fight and not just guys who are solely good at fighting it will be a far better league. Fights shouldn't be for the fighters, it should be for when someone is cheapshotted, it is just silly to see these fights off the first faceoff that prove nothing, but that guy won or lost on hockeyfights.com. I want to see an enforcer beat the pulpy gory s*** out of a guy like tootoo or gary roberts who just took a cheapshot on a star player rather than them fighting each other to see who can get skacore to like them better. Downey did a little bit of both but not nearly enough of the latter. I love fighting when it is warranted but when I hear people praising Downey for accomplishing about nothing but a few vids on hockeyfights or drop your gloves is beyond me.

He is a good fighter, im not denying that, im saying he isn't cut for the nhl, he can't do anything but fight, he can't hit which takes as much brawn as fighting, at least a guy Boogaard can crush someones bowel anatomy into paste when he hits them and strikes fear into anyone who looks at him.

Well they took a step backwards with the instigator if only whey would change it so that you are free of taking one during a delayed penalty. And take out the useless fights after clean hits.

I would define it as ice skating with sticks and football pads with lots of second rate nhl goons skating around a rink trying to stick handle while running into each other and falling down and crying.

The funny thing is I wans't even talking to you when I brought that up, I was in the middle of comparing his role to Carcillo's and you butted in saying I was blasphemous prompting me to remember all the times he fell on his ass while trying to hit someone. Good, Downey got a contract, cograts for him, but I'll feel sorry for him when he goes to make a check on someone and gets rocked again, like I said I would love to still have him in GR but he just can't hack it on an elite nhl team. And he wasn't impactful as a fighter for us anyways, I always felt he fought at the wrong times.

Cleary got his eye poked, Forsberg was initiationg contact and it was border line late, Franzen is a diver but he has one of the best wristers in the league, Lidstrom gets hit once every decade, fact is all these players have way more to offer than Downey so please quit making these horrible comparisons. Your just making more and more of a fool out of yourself, you and your streaming love for Downey. I hope you guys never try to stalk Downey he will beat the s*** out of you all.

Tootoo will do a cheapshot so awful that it will invoke the anger of gods and the power of pain trian x10 will be released into Ericsson. I agree Tootoo is an experienced fighter, but Ericsson will at least grapple with him and you never know he could land that 1 huge punch. Plus the size advantage, tootoo seems kinda stupid for going with guys 7-8 inches taller than him. Kinda like barnaby going after chara , it doesn't really work, Vlabik must really suck at fighting to have that much reach advantage and apparently lose to tootoo, i remember him getting his face filled in by Godard.

GOnna go with Ericsson with 10 gmaes after a brutal hand injury from defacing tootoo or perry. But i could also see wiliams or eaves getting their faces filled in as well.

Well I'm not arguing against fighting, I'm just stating the facts about Downey here. Ppl used to laugh at him before he got here, especially after his fight with Nortaon and that one time when he got absolutely annihilated by someone Umberger style while he was in Montreal.
