Interesting article on the Lowe Burke situation. Story Very true, that is why I said not stat or play wise, I meant as far as being the leader and a guy that everyone got behind and supported. The city of Edmonton loved him and had he stayed there I would be willing to bet that he would have reached Iconic stature the likes of Yzerman in Detroit. But again, he is not the caliber player of Yzerman.

Not to mention what it may cost him next year, in players that is. We won't know truly how good or bad of a GM he is until after the 08/09 season when he has 14 UFA. Burke has 3 players currently on that roster that are signed beyond 08/09. Obviously that is a long time away and he will sign people in the next off season, but in two years that will be a completely different team. OH BTW the three players he has signed are Giguere, Pronger, Allen.

I can't say the only one, but I don't think he does. As stated by another poster, the only thing he did in Anaheim was get Scott N, who was coming anyway to play with his brother. Now he has signed an injured and sub par Bertuzzi and an aging but great offensive defense man in Schneider.

I have to say of anyone on this board I have watched more Penner games by far. Everyone of his games at Umaine was on tv and same with the pirates. So even if you watched every single ducks game last year you are still a ways behind me. PENNER IS NOT LAZY. That is a bitter, bitter shell of a man we can call a duck fan. But don't worry dude, there a hundred or more of you on here that were all about Bertuzzi until the duck signed him. Penner is a work horse. How does a lazy player go from undrafted to worth 4.3 mil (yours, my eyes or Lowe's some one thought 4.3)! Tell me a pro player that isn't arrogant in any sport and the few you can name are way less then the arrogant ones I can name.

Thank you KP for stating what I have thought for months but feared to say: Bertuzi is useless and washed up. You may have said it different but that is how I feel. he is done, he is scared to hit people. I believe he had no intention of harming Moore and the fact the man got hurt weighs heavy on his mind, he had no intentions of doing what he did and the fact that he caused that much damage is making him afraid to use his body in the way that made him very good to great.

Dom, I see your point with Smyth, that was stupid to just let him go (especially what he meant to that team and the city) it would be like the wings letting Yzerman go over 50k (inflation and pay increase). Not stat wise or that they are the same player, but Smyth was starting to become that team and that city's Steve Yzerman. On the Penner thing, honestly if Bert with his back and issues is worth 4m why not Penner it is just as big of a risk. The only difference is Penner is younger, has a better ability to recover from injuries (youth factor, young bastards), and doesn't have a lot of baggage. Overpaid, sure, but tell me an athlete that isn't. Look at the busts that have happened with UFA's, Hatcher, Floppa (due to injury not performance) and others. I think in 5 years people will not remember how the Oil got Penner because it will be common practice. There won't be a "Holy crap, that Penner guy, he is the one Lowe got for an offer letter." I wish Ken Holland had the balls to be the first to do it. But then again he could be a bust at 4.3 mil and then the GM will look like a fool. It is so damn hard to judge how good some one will be. I would have thought Datsyuk would be 4 times the player Zetterberg is. However, and this is not a shot at Dats he is great, but Z is definitely proving to be the better all around guy. And didn't Burke technically do the same thing with Bert, that Lowe did with Penner. He knew the wings were really the only team showing him interest and gave him an overpaid contract to keep the wings from matching. The process is really the same, the difference is in the title of the player, UFA vs RFA.

Great point about the recent signings Hank. Look at it this way who is the bigger question mark at 4 mil Bertuzzi with his back issues and not being able to reclaim his old form, yet. OR Penner who is a young unproven guy that has had success at the AHL level and his a big bruising forward that could potentially be the next Bertuzzi of a couple of years ago. Me I spend on Penner, because I for one think Bertuzzi is afraid to be the monster he once was. Not because he may get hurt, but that he may hurt another player. I just don't think he could live with that even if it was the cleanest hit the game has ever seen.

Penner tore it up in Portland, he was a force on the ice every night, one game he scored 4 goals in a come back win for the Pirates, the very next game he was fore checking machine and an absolute bull on the ice, got 1 or 2 assists. Bobby Ryan as said before is smaller and has not accomplished what Penner did in the AHL. Want to know something weird Penner went undrafted! To me that means he is a guy devoted to being the best player he can be and works his tail off to get there. That is why I wanted him in the wheel badly. As for Lowe, he is just the first guy to do it, I think the Raiders got a bunch of crap for being the first NFL team to offer an RFA a contract, but it might have been the Bucs. Either way the team got a bunch of grief and now teams do it all of the time. The first offer sheet was the Redskins signing Wilbur Marshall from the bears, I was no where near close! This will just make sure that any good GM does what Ken did with Dats and will do with Zata. In the long run you will see that this is not that bad of a thing and will actually control spending, because you will not be able to assume your RFA is yours to be had and that means you can't freely spend on a UFA. Once the price of UFA's drops a little so won't the RFA price tag. Edit: Wrote NHL meant AHL

Don't you just love it. As soon as he heard it and knew it was an offer he couldn't match he started bad mouthing Lowe. If he could have matched I bet he wouldn't have been nearly as vocal about Burke. Oh and way to wait until the last minute, because that was so much more classy than what Lowe did. I think regardless of if Penner is with the Oil or the Duck, Perry and Getzlaf will want more money then him, unless they fall flat on their faces this year and he tears it up. Now if they tear it up and he falls on his face they will look for massive money.

Oh I know they are not the same injury, which is what makes my post even more worry some, I have issues with my back still 8 years later and my injury is not as severe as his. Although his rehab will be with a little bit better doctors and medical staff.
