NO it is indeed a Ha ha you were wrong thread. I guess my point was, he was looking for a you were right from people, and the only people he could get that from is the lunatic fringe, as opposed to people who stated rebound control was going to kill him and in turn the team or something of the like. I think even the OP would have to admit no one, and I mean no one, saw this kind of improvement in rebound control coming. I am huge Howie fan, pulling for the Black Bear (future one too), but this is by far his best hockey of his young career, and I didn't see it coming. The guy has been awesome, a few questionable goals here or there, but that is going to happen to all goalies.

Well, my source is many a TV interviews with the team (hey found a link), it may even be mentioned on the DVD. If you remember they were the so called "Idiots" and Millar made everyone take shots before game 4, of Jack Daniels to be precise. He started the mantra of don't let us win this game, because if we win this game, we can win another game, and then another, and game 7 is always a crap shoot. When they one game 4, the shots of Jack became a superstitious ritual (athletes are some superstitious people). They won 8 straight games and the World Series. Edit: When it became a big story they played it down, and I am sure Tek, and those guys symbolically drank, but I am sure others took a shot. I am a drinker, so maybe it is my perspective, but I can function quite well after one shot. A guy like Tek who never For all of his glaring faults, Millar is one of my favorite Red Sox of all time, way more than Nomar or Manny, or even Ortiz. Millar for me is right up there with Pedroia as far as new era sox. His attitude and the way he played the game reminded me of what I would want to be like as a Pro. He was having fun and living it up, beer gut and cowboy up. Except I am not a cowboy at all. **A Kevin Millar factoid, he is (as far as I know) the only replacement player (scab) to win a World Series. However, because he was a scab, you will not find his name on any of the official World Series merchandise, as he is not a member of the players union, because he was a scab.

I know your pain, my wife is pregnant and sleeping all of the time (She normally sleeps a ton, but now even more), we have a 600 sq foot house(anyone want to over pay for a small house in NH?), needless to say I have learned to hold my excitement long enough to get outdoors and let the screams rip. Game 4 however, Helm caught me a little off guard and I may have woken up my wife, my unborn, the dog, the neighbor, the fish in the lake across the street. This time however I was in the pisser and missed it. The replay was not as scream inducing!

I find it hilarious that the Sharks are about as close to a mirror image of the Wings as you can get. They even stopped paying high priced Goalies. But the funny part is that what has bit the Wings in the ass sooooooo many times (a Hot Tender) could bite them in the ass, even though they are outplaying the Wings. If you want to copy the mold, all weaknesses come with it.

I think the difference in the past two shark seasons and the standard choke on your hockey stick sharks from years past is the young guys, specifically that 3rd line. It is like in the NCAA b-ball tourney, when they say a team doesn't know they are supposed to get annihilated and they go on to win. That 3rd line doesn't know they are supposed to be soft and choke on it. I hate that third line the same way sharks fans probably hate Helm, Kronner, and whomever else. I respect them, but damn they need to learn to play soft, and fold like a lawn furniture in October. Isn't that the Shark way. I watched the Red Sox do this comeback in 04, and the best way to make the come back is to be lose in the locker room (as the Sox were doing shots before games) and just play hard, play to win that period, then the next, then the next, the next. I think this Wings team can do it, the Flyers did it against a very tough Bruins. But the Bruins did not have the star power that the Sharks have. Going to be an interesting night at the Joe on Tues. Those of you going, cheer extra loud for Opie from NH!!!!!!!!

The problem with Threads like this (and I have made them) is the people you intend to read it will not. The lunatic fringe that wanted Howard executed, wanted Nick to lose the C, wanted Pavel traded, think Z is done. All of those guys, if they even read this thread are not going to post. The other problem is people who were legitimately worried about Howie, think you are calling them out. These threads are never as fulfilling as you would have hoped they would be. Having said that, I am very happy with Howard, he is exceeding every single one of my expectations. I wouldn't say he has stolen games, but his first period play (while the rest of the team wakes up, except gm 4) has kept them in this series. Good on you Howie!

pictures with SI article pretty good, nothing great.

Preds: The lack of scoring compared to the Sharks, will hurt them. Sure they have a better goalie, but I think the depth Detroit will overrun the lower lines NAS has. The way the PK performed against Pho I worry about facing the Sharks.
-
He would be a very good pick up for them. They could do a lot worse than Bryz in TB, he would make an already decent team very good. IMO they are already better than PHO.
-
Short Answer: I don't blame Bryz nearly as much as his D. They almost never helped him out. Long Answer: There are very few game changing netminders in the playoffs, Luongo & Miller. The rest is a talented group, but have never been great for as long of periods as these two. Bryz was close to getting there, but he has to be the team, he comes up clutch in the Reg season, but in the playoffs too many goals are ugly garbage goals where he could have used a D-man to pull it off the line, or not kick one in. He can't count on his team when things break down, most of their d-men are offensive minded, adding to the problem. But look around the playoffs(no particular order): Price Rinne Howard Quick Thomas etc... None of those names jump out at you(Post season play I am talking about), that was what gave me confidence in the Wings riding Howard, he fits in that group just fine, some may be a little better, some are a little worse. But the teams that worried me were Van and Pho (in the west) because of the netminding. But again no one helped Bryz. The point to this rant, I expected a lot from Bryz, and for the most part he was out of his mind. He was stellar, until the play broke down and when he needed his D to step up they failed. Cleary's goal was an epitome of that. Clears is in the zone in the corner of the boards with 3 defenders around him and the Wings in the middle of a line change(Bert's getting to the bench was a funny clip btw). No one goes after Cleary, you can tell Bryz thinks there is a Wing on the back door as he is sliding over there once Cleary shoots. If a defender plays Cleary, does the play work out differently, who knows. The Bert goal as well. Bert made a good move behind the net, but the Pho defender tried to play the puck instead of Bert. Bert wraps the puck around the net, Bryz covers the net and the shot is going wide, until a Yote D-man kicks it in. Ok maybe it hit his skate, but still. Bryz had them in the game stoning Bert especially many times. Then their play in their own zone broke down. Too me they were far to worried about the break out pass as opposed to defending their zone.

Wish nothing but the best for him, hope his name is on the cup after this year. However I would rather have any of the following in the lineup (Z and mule excluded): Abby Eaves Miller Hudler Abby needs to be a permanent fixture in this roster, and so don't Eaves and Miller. (All 3 should get multi year deals with Wings, imo) Hudler has been playing hard, doing the right thing with the puck, he has shown he can be a sniper. Modano has shown that he is just not ready for this roster. I think had he played an entire season he would be better suited. But as is, he looks like he lacks a chemistry with anyone other than Dats. But then again, I attribute that to Dats.
-
I think Abby has more potential to be Marty Lapointe 2.0. I see more upside than Malts or Mac and he has a little edge but not a lot. But that is just me.
-
I have really enjoyed watching Abby and Helm develop, I think Abby with Cleary is straight BUTTER! Add in Big Bert and that line was damn good, Abby seems to fit a lot of roles on this team can play almost any line. And with Mentors like Maltby and Draper (those two were specifically mentioned last game) how can they go wrong. They are part of the next generation of guys who will have the Red Wing tattoo on their chests.
-
Am I the only one that thinks Helm and Eaves make Draper look 5 years younger?
-
Me too, although I think it was the 2000 part of the season that I found the place. This place has been the bomb, for awhile this place was so filled with in depth knowledge, not opinion which the board is filled with now (not saying good or bad as this is my opinion right here). I was expecting to see Stevie eat that one in the eye, but that was 03 or 04?
-
So I am sitting here with Chuck Norris, we watched that and one single solitary tear fell from his eyes. He said takes this and save a child from cancer. But the tear was so heavy I could not carry it! Then he showed me his Yzerman tattoo that had the words "My Hero" underneath it, not only that but when he lifted his shirt the song "My Hero" by Foo Fighters played from his chest. Ok in all seriousness, awesome commercial. That run was unbelievable, and without Stevie the team never makes it out of the first round.

I saw a scary trend yesterday, the teams down 2-0 got a lot of PP's. I believe each also got on 5-3. Add that to the Penalties the Wings have been taking(and some getting called on them) and I think are going to have to play the whole game on the pk, and any penalty has to be served by two people. Oh but this has nothing to due with the league, the officials sucking, or the league wanting long series. Even Chicago got a lot of calls (although Torres should have been a 5, not a two minute penalty), and it appeared to me that the iffy ones went Chicago's way, while if Chicago committing an iffy penalty it wasn't called. I am not saying the league has picked teams to get the calls, but rather the situations. For instance: In the regular season lots of times the team behind gets a power play late, almost inevitable. Same in the post season, only now it is also the team behind in the series. Watch, if Chicago is up 2-3 goals the next game Van will not get that seemingly timely PP, that Chicago was getting, because Van is winning the series. I only use Chi Van as an example, New York got a plethora of calls in there favor, all but the goal. I just think that between the refs sucking and the fact that it looks like they are trying to make games/series closer than they are for ratings and viewer interest, it looks like some one is tinkering with results. Overall, I think the refs just suck in all sports, in general I think many are too slow, too old, and none of them are in any where near the shape nor have the speed of the players they are trying to referee, they are almost always out of position.
-
The media around here was so arrogant about this series. After the last regular season game, the media was all set to play the Habs. Be careful what you ask for. Although on the local broadcast, oh man do I hate Jack Edwards, they brought up their Twisted fact, brought to you by twisted tea. 3 teams from cali (Ana, SJ, LAK) and only 2 from Canada (Van, Mon)

Toews wouldn't be top 3 but he sure as hell would be top 10! 1. Datsyuk, hey I may be a little biased here, but this guy does a ton on offense and is the best Defensive forward in the game. 2. Crosby, I am not the biggest Crosby fan, some of his personality traits (that I see on the ice). But there is no denying his skill level, and he is starting to get better on the defensive side. 3. Duncan Keith, Going to be a beast for years to come 4. Ovechkin, I really think he will grow into the C, just as soon as he progresses on the D. 5. Weber, Going to be very very good for many years to come, very good D-man. 6. Zetterberg, call me a homer again, but second best Defensive forward, when healthy is dynamic, and a very good leader. 7. Doughty, again going to be a great D man for years to come. 8. Parise, All around solid game, leader. 9. Toews, Very good all around game, will get better on D, will get more dynamic on O. 10. Lucic, I just really like this kid, his hands are really starting to develop nicely, another player who will get better in his own zone with time. Of course, this list is loaded with my personal opinion!

First off: I think in a year like this where there is no stand out candidate it becomes an award given on "outside merit". For example, sometimes awards are given as more of a life time achievement than on the true merits of the award. Sometimes they are given to right past wrongs. I think this year Lids gets it because he is one of the best in the game still, and this would cement his name in the record books with Doug Harvey. Could be his last year (I personally don't think so), give it to him he deserves it, and to tell you the truth, who is the better defenseman in the league right now? Yandle or Visnovsky? Would you say either of those guys is decidedly better than lids? Chara? doubt it, he is not getting any votes out of the Mon area.

If there was one F/D/G you could add to the team, who would it be?
