Glad to hear all the pets are OK!!

True 100% agreed, however you have to see how that looks to the Org when it is in fact their decision to hang the 91 or not. I have not nor will I ever begrudge Feds for looking out for number 1, hell I do it every damn day I come to work! But I don't expect my companies to name a wing or a building after me once I have left. And I am sure Feds could care less about his 91 hanging in Det, just like I could give two sh!ts what my last employer thinks of me. The Lids cap if I am not mistaken was Hollands idea as a way to make Lids comfortable with taking less money, because if Hossa came in at 8-9 mil this year I sure as hell would be pissed off in Lids shoes if I show the Org a ton of dedication and take a pay cut to give them room to surround me with better players, hold Dats and Z to that line and then give Hossa all that money. It would be a slap in the face. But I have no first hand knowledge of whom initiated the Lids cap, I just know it exists. That is what separates people like Lids and Yzerman from people like Feds and I, I am not willing to put my employer above me, I don't have the faith that they would do the same if the roles were reversed. Lids and Yzerman had faith in the Wings org. To Feds proving to himself he could lead a team could have been more important and I don't hate on him for wanting to achieve all the goals he set for himself. But you cannot take only his side and say well he was just doing right by himself they should retire it. NO, they (more than any other org) expect players to put the org first, at least in regards to the 'C' and hanging his jersey.

You stated Lids threatened to go back to Sweden as a negotiation tactic, thus trying to compare him to Feds. I stated he was only comparable in and of the fact they wore the same sweater. Then I defended my opinion, not to you, just defended my opinion. You can have whatever opinion of Feds you want, however so can I, but if I say he doesn't deserve his number retired and don't defend it I am labeled a Jilted ex-lover. SO therefore I defended my position. The idea of Lids retiring has come up each and every year, was it brought up by him, nope media and fans, and until you can find a quote from Lids that says, he stated he was wanted to go back instead of playing for Det, it is absolutely nothing like Feds. I am sure he has been asked about it, and I have no doubt that he at some point and time said I would like to raise my children in Sweden. Nationalistic pride, I get it. But never has he signed an offer with another team or made any commitment to play anywhere but in DET, same with Yzerman, even after he was half way to Vancouver. Still don't see a difference? My point: you tried, but failed, to say that what Lids did compares to what Feds did. When in actuality the two are no where near each other. EDIT: BTW making mistakes is fine, Lids put one in the back of his own net, takes penalties and I am sure once and a while swears, accidentally, in front of his kids. But those mistakes are not the same as saying I want to play some where else, in this frame of context, because after all we are talking about the Red Wings retiring his number not you or I. You not latching the gate (BTW I hope the pets are more than OK, as a recent dog owner I can only imagine how I would feel, I truly hope all is well) apparently has dire consequences, are you going to do it again, let alone the very next chance you get. Because that is what Feds did. He signed an offer sheet, at that time the closest thing he could contractually do to signing with another team, and then when the first chance to sign with another team came along, he did. I don't considered what he did a mistake, it may have been a mistake in hindsight, but his intentions were not mistaken, he didn't accidentally sign the wrong contract, he didn't sign the offer sheet thinking man it is going to be great playing in Detroit the rest of my career. No he was thinking I can't wait to get the hell out of Det. Now for some reason the Org should be saying we can't wait to retire his Jersey even though he couldn't wait to leave our team. ERRRRRRRR Wrong answer Bucko (Richie Cunningham reference). And imo if the minute a player retires the ORG isn't instantly thinking we have to put his number in the rafters as soon as possible, it probably shouldn't go up. Lids, no question retire it! Yzerman, no question retire it! Ozzie, your opinion my opinion, there are still questions, same with Draper and Maltby, same will be said for Homer

You know posts like this one always make me wonder what could have been, what is the guy 29 now. Man that kid had it all, and he was smart as hell too, he was learning from everyone he could. Damn shame!

I am staying out of the rest of this post we have been here done that about 8000 times on this board. However are you seriosly trying to tell me that the guy who willing gave up money for more talent to join the team used playing in Sweden as a threat? First off I have never seen Lids say, "I don't want to play for the Wings any more." I have heard rumblings that he would like to go home and play for his native Sweden, to me that is very very different from saying, "I would love to play for the Hurricanes/Ducks, I don't want to play in Detroit". What was his reasoning, Ana was closer to Russia? Saying you want to go back and play for your home country or play back home is different than saying I want to play for another team in your league because I don't like you. A comparison of Lids and Feds ends at the fact they both wore the winged wheel! Lids is a consummate pro, Feds is and only ever has been worried about himself. I have no problem with that, doesn't bother me, but that attitude sure as hell keeps you from getting your number retired in Det. List of things lids did that make him a Red Wing at Heart (which is pivotal in getting your Jersey to the rafters): - Took a lesser contract to get more talent here. - Surrendered money (He, Stevie, and Shanny all gave back money (pre-cba) to get Hull, Dom, Luc in Det) - Wore the C (say what you want this weighs heavy, it takes a lot to get the C on your chest on this team) - Kept contracts and whatever other business in house. - Always put the Org ahead of himself. - Lids is one of the top 5 (depending on your view #2 imo) of all time at his position, both reg and post season. - NEVER HELD OUT! (your and my opinion of this as a business decision is moot, The Org's opinion on this is a huge bone of contention). Anyone else feel free to add on!

RE: bolded No way in hell, have you watched this Wings team in the last 5 years, no way in hell does this team have a bench clearing brawl. If they do I will crap my pants on camera and youtube it for all to see! Well maybe not but you get the idea!

If the rule is in place (which I believe it is) then yes unfortunately that deserves a suspension technically. I hate the predetermined opening face off fight as much as anyone, but only because it messes with the game, I don't mind fisticuffs when appropriate. Now had they gone at it the game before when Joe challenged him, that would have been the perfect time for a fight. However regardless of my opinion of fighting there is no way in hell either guy should get suspended for that.

1. Very True. 2. Neither Babcock, nor McLellan are the true reasons for Detroit's greatness, Holland, Nill, Illitches, etc. are responsible, Babs and his coaches have to get them ready to play, be motivated, but they are not the architects people think they are. That is why Lewis sucked, he couldn't get the wings motivated to get on the bus let alone the ice! 3. Wrong, Detroit has the best D in the game right now. EDIT: I may have missed what you were saying, I could be agreeing with you and I think I am after re-reading your post! Lids, Rafalski, Kronwall, Stuart, and Ericsson all showed what they could do in games 1-3, game 4 second period was one bad lapse by the wings (thinking they had already won the series) and a last ditch effort by the BJ's. Say what you want and I know we are all supposed to be afraid of the big bad ducks, but right now the only team in the post season that gives me a scare is the Bruins. The Ducks have one and 2/3 lines. Their D while greatly improved with the arrival or Whitney (I bet they are glad they didn't trade Pronger now huh?) but they are still not as good as the Wings D. The Ducks looked impressive against a perennial disaster of a playoff team, lets see how they do against a team that knows how to win and how to take it up a notch in the post season! How many times was Hiller screened last series? How many times do you think he will see the Red Wings set up their offense and see the puck without an ass in his face? As stated by other posters in other threads, Theodore was the hottest thing going last year in the post season, he took an undermanned Avs further than they ever should have gotten, right up until he ran into the Wings. Then it was Turco was the hottest thing going, meh. Wasn't Ellis in Nashville supposed to be the hot young netminder that gave the wings fits last year too? Side note: I know this is going to sound like I am an asshat, well that is because I am an asshat. But how is it that so many Wings fans are so quick to say they can't beat the next team? Is it really so that after the series you can say told you so if they lose? Is it really that much easier to think the odds will win out, than to have faith in your team (defending cup champs, 4 seasons 50 wins, 1000 season of 100 points [exaggeration])? I don't know unless I were a C-Bus fan and was looking at a 2 v 7 matchup but even then I would still hold out hope. This whole being realistic crap is for the birds, playoffs in any sport are a crap shoot, but to look at this wings team and what they have done in just this season, not the past 15, gives me confidence, and then add on to that the fact that some of these guys were around for the 15 years of success and know how to win, gives me even more confidence. The fact the ducks beat the sharks gives me little confidence in the ducks, s*** everyone predicted that upset, so much so that I am not sure it was even an upset anymore. This ducks team is a shadow of the 07 team yet people on here treat them like Sox fans treat the Yankees, afraid of them. This ducks team is worse than 07 better than 08. This Wings team is better than 07 and better than 08, which was better than 07.

I was thinking a very similar thing: This is going to be a hard fought series. I really want to see Chicago win because a Detroit Chicago finals would be awesome and the Wings wouldn't travel to VAN and all of the games would be at a normal time for us East Coasters!

My thoughts from the preview thread:
-
Actually in my diatribe you quoted above I had originally written Chelios D would be much better over Lebda's O upside, or basically his speed! But I thought better of it and left it out, I am still torn though, the old man knows what he is doing back there, I sure as hell wouldn't mind knowledge back there! Not much Cheli hasn't seen in the game of hockey!
-
Lilja's shot blocking abilities would be great this round, Ducks are going to be all around the net, stopping shots before they get to Ozzie would be a great help, lets just hope the guys can clear the puck!
-
Ana is way to undisciplined, if they take as many penalties against the Wings as they did the sharks it will be a short series. The Duck have a very good offense and a very good D, however in my opinion the Wings have a spectacular offense and a very good to great (at times) defense. Special teams is with out a doubt another feather in the Wings cap. The Wings can and will roll 4 lines all night and all series long, the Ducks can not do that, they are not deep enough to compete. After line 2 the Ducks have a severe drop off. The only way I see the Ducks taking this series is if they win it by heart, if the Wings show up flat and uninspired they will get slaughtered by the hungry, tenacious, young ducks. There is a major difference between this Wings team and the Wings that lost to the Ducks 2 years ago, as well as this is a very different Ducks team. The Wings are healthy (except Draper, Lilja) which will be a huge difference from the meeting a few years ago, Top 4 D-men are in tact and I would wager that Ericsson is an upgrade over Lilja everywhere except blocked shots and PK. Stuart is a big addition to the Blue line and Playoff Kronwall is a lot different than Regular Season Kronwall and Kronner of 2 years ago. The offense has made the following changes: Bobby Lang to Marian Hossa Todd Beruzzi to Jiri Hudler Defensive changes: Chris Chelios (Mathieu Schneider) to Brian Rafalski Danny Markov to Brad Stuart Kyle Quincey to Niklas Kronwall Andreas Lilja to Jonathon Ericsson I would even go so far as to say that Z and Dats are much better and much more complete players than they were two years ago. This year losing to the Ducks, imo would be a shame, it would mean that they lost due to lack of heart and intensity. Not saying the Ducks aren't good and aren't hot as hell. But lets bare in mind they just beat a perennial playoff disaster, Hiller was amazing, again against a perennial playoff disaster. The Ducks will take this at least 5, more than likely 6 games, they will be tough to beat at home, very tough to beat at home. The line change could hurt, but with this team playing great team D, I don't see it being something the Wings shouldn't overcome. All in all imo, the Wings win this in 5 losing the first game at the pond (game 3). Remember two years ago the wings were supposed to be destroyed by the physical Flames and Sharks, they were not, and they lost to the ducks due to injuries and a crappy PP(IMO), not because they were beat up by the ducks. This team is better all around, offense is better and has better pieces, defense is better and has better pieces if not just because they are healthy.

Same here, I have 0 problems with Cleary! But he is expendable, to the poster who was arguing about people claiming he is expendable. He is expendable and replaceable, do I want him gone, no, but that doesn't mean he isn't expendable, hell the only 3 not are: Lids, Dats, and Hank.

Actually the NFL, Ronnie Lott had a badly injured finger and I believe they amputated it at the half so he could play the second half. Some stories say he cut it off on the bench but I am not sure. Actually funny side story, Macfarlane toys made a legends of the game series and Ronnie Lott and his half a left pinky are included.

On versus they threw up one of those contrived stats and I was surprised to see the names. I don't remember the numbers or names specifically but I remember one part, the stat was most playoff goals since 2004. 1. H. Zetterberg 30 2. Marleau 27 3. Selanne 26 Now the names I could be way off, I was a little self medicated after the Wings win, but Z was tops with 30 and the second place was 27. I am thinking it was Marleau and Selanne because those were the teams playing and the announcer made a comment about Marleau being dogged on for not scoring but being in the top 3. Discuss.
-
That must have been the other name, I know they were talking about Marleau and I know Z's name was a top the list, but the other name escaped me. Thanks. BTW I know some people will say that Hank is leading because of the Team he is on is always in the playoffs, well since 2004 so haven't the Sharks, Ducks, Flames, Canucks, Devils and others. Man trying to come up with a list of teams that have been in the postseason since 04 in the east was a hell of a lot tougher than the west, man the east is like a merry go round!!

Did anyone just hear the comment on VS about the Wings win?
Opie replied to RyanK's topic in General
And the Hockey God spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Hockey Stick. Then shalt thou count Five Players, no more, no less, unless thy sin bin be full. Five shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be Five. Six shalt thou not count unless thy net be empty, neither count thou Four, excepting that thou then proceed to Five. Seven is right out. Once the number Five, being the Fifth number, be reached, then playest thou thy Holy Hockey Game of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it." Hope everyone gets it!! -
Thread of the century! I really wish I could get the quality from the NHL I can get from China! It wouldn't be so bad if the Jersey weren't 4 times cheaper quality, I mean I get the price being 4 x more but why so f-in cheap? Edit: oops forgot why I was going to post: Just got my Lid Winter Classic in the mail, BEAUTY! Thank you LITB!

Was it suspension worthy, hell no. Is it worthy of a benching, maybe. Torts didn't look all too happy with one Mr. Avery. Tortorella said there was no room on his team for Sean Avery before the Rags re-signed him, the team forces Avery upon him. Avery is quiet for about a week, then he starts. The look on Tortorella's face says it all. Avery's actions may not be suspend able but he is running out of teams that will want him. The thing with Avery is that he has no self control. He cannot stop doing dumb things. If you want to fight to amp up your teams energy fine, but what in the hell good is done by what Avery did? Did his team get fired up and start to play better hockey, no they mostly hung their heads in disgust! BTW I hate Sean Avery and would never under any circumstances want him back in the winged wheel, however that was not a suspension worthy punch! I am not even sure it was worth the misconduct penalty but I suppose because it was after the play, and with the Thomas thing that just happened, his reputation, blah blah... the refs saw reason to give him the misconduct.

Ahhh he barely even hit him, I'M JUST BULLSH!TTIN', AND YOU KNOW THIS MAN!

Well said, I think a lot of people confuse getting beat up and not having 2 of your top 3 D-men and the Power play sucking hind ***, the only beating they handed out was Homer and the series.
