While I agree with you, it's not like hockey players have a window to play in that goes til they're 40. The prime for a hockey player nowadays is 22-29. After a player turns 30, the wheels start to go and the youngsters start to get a step up. There are players like Lidstrom and Chelios who train fanatically and give themselves a few years of extension to this principle, but for the most part, Ericsson has to develop FAST. He needs to be a great player within the next two years, or the Wings are going down.

Mine is simple. I'd ask Babcock to break up the Datsyuk-Holmstrom duo. 50 games of sub-standard Datsyuk performance is enough. Hell, 10 games was enough for me.

I'd have left, too. Detroit is like a retirement home for old players with declining value today. Holland and Babcock hold onto guys like Draper, Holmstrom, and Maltby until they die. I don't mind letting a hall of famer like Yzerman play one or two years too long, because he's a fricking legend. But these other guys have to go and make room for the kids. Otherwise, this kind of stuff should be expected. I wouldn't want to waste away in the Red Wings ORGANIZATION when I could play for the New York Islanders or Florida Panthers or some team that embraces youth.

The guy that I think brings the LEAST amount of value for his worth at this point in his contract is Brian Rafalski. I wish we could get rid of him. 2 more years after this one, though. At 6 mil per. Absolutely killing us.

I'm not saying he's any more than a 6th defenseman in the NHL, but a 6th defenseman on the Detroit Red Wings is more than likely a pretty good NHLer. I wish this guy would get some time with Lidstrom. I think his footspeed would be a bigger benefit to our top defensive pair than Rafalski's outlet passes. Lidstrom already has the outlet pass part covered for his pairing, anyways. Perhaps a Lidstrom/Lebda, Rafalski/Ericsson, Stuart/Kronwall combo would be more effective? Regardless, I think Lebda deserves a little more credit than he gets.
