Marlies vs Griffins - AHL Line Brawl - Nov 24, 2010
WorkingOvertime replied to MrWings787's topic in General
Amadio fought a few minutes before the line-brawl. It was the first fight of the game. The Griffins are by no means 'brawl like'. Before that game they were towards the bottom of the AHL in fighting majors. There are many talented players on the Griffins. I was going to comment on Tatar not taking the helmet off, but the fact that he dropped the gloves was good enough for me. It didn't look like he wanted to drop them and fight, so I can forgive him not ditching the lid. If the same thing happens again I hope he sheds the lid. However, this was probably his first gloves-off hockey fight and I'll give him a pass. -
Preds are getting it handed to them by the Wild right now. Does anyone know why Tootoo hasn't been fighting so much lately? Nystrom dropped his gloves and grabbed Tootoo, and Tootoo didn't do anything with his team down 4-1. Edit- Tootoo redeems himself by fighting Stoner as I type.

11/26 GDT: Red Wings 2 at Blue Jackets 1

I could see E fighting Boll tonight. Boll is always looking for big (dangerous at times) hits, so hopefully E steps up for the team if Boll gets reckless. This hit against Raffy (and earlier against Dats- not shown) was bad. Good to see May step-in here. -

It's surprising that the Griffins didn't have anyone particularly tough on the ice during the line-brawl. The Griffins' enforcers also had fights in that game though. It was funny to see Tatar mix it up despite his small size. Glad he remembered to drop the gloves before fighting. Good to see Smith getting involved and Tardif (as always) sticking up for his teammates. -

Here's a better view. Good to see Tatar sticking up for himself. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLbTz-HDyGw&feature=related The rest of the fights from the game can be seen here- http://www.hockeyfights.com/forums/f44/grand-rapids-toronto-11-24-10-a-150711/ -
Thanks for uploading the fights. It was good to see Mursak jump in there in defense of a hit in his only fight (thus far) this season.

11/21 GDT: Flames 4 at Red Wings 5 (OT)

He was removing it as the linemen jumped in. Iggy was first but Abby was taking his off- he starts to before the refs come in and skates to the box with the strap already undone. -

I was glad to see him willing to drop the lid and go with Iggy. Definitely a good move for the team. I dont know why Iggy tried to fight then. If it was for the hit, there was plenty of time before the last minute. -
I think Callahan will be in the AHL next year as it looks like he has maxed out his WHL potential. Also, it seldom happens that a 20yr drafted player stays in the WHL if he leads his team in points. Ritola has more opportunity in Tampa than he would have had in Detroit if he stayed. I believe he has more toi and pp time than Abby too. I thought I would mention it since they both have relatively equal opportunities now. We both have strong, stubborn opinions so I thought we might back them up sometime Either way, Wings are winning so it's a good night for us all.

Red Wings Nationwide Arena vs. Jackets
WorkingOvertime replied to detroit_hockey99's topic in General
I was planning to go to this game but decided not to recently. Are you from the Columbus area? If you like beer I would suggest going to Bodega before the game- they have half-off over 50 drafts (circulating) and pretty good food. For a more dinner focused place (and closer to Nationwide) I would suggest Marcellas, which also has great happy hour specials on both food and drinks. I wouldn't expect to get close to the Wings at an away arena as the away team is usually out quickly- at the Joe I had good luck seeing some of the players after game 7 vs. the Ducks a few years back. R-Bar is also a popular hockey bar but it will likely be full of CBJ fans. -
4 years? Didn't Abby and Helm each play two years in the AHL before being called up full time? I could see Callahan being called up earlier due to his gritty style. I don't know why people aren't impressed with Callahan's offensive stats. While WHL scoring doesn't always translate to the NHL, it is the best predictor for WHL players making the jump to the NHL. Off topic- Heaten, do you remember our bet involving Abby and Ritola and the player's shirt? I believe it was if Abby has more points than Ritola (or visa-versa) that you would send me an Abby shirt (or visa-versa). I don't think we agreed because of possible games played, but it seems Ritola is getting more chances than Abby. Would you like to renew this friendly wager? I'd be happy if Ritola does well, but IMO he isn't the player Abby is.
-
Cooke isn't a bad offensive player. I would be happy if Callahan were a Cooke with respect for other players that fights more.

I was ahead of my time with the other thread last week I don't see what you mean by gritty skill guys. Most of our skilled prospects and players aren't gritty. This isn't always a bad thing but IMO they aren't gritty as a group. Callahan was drafted due to his grit and his scoring has developed above expectations. I'm excited to see Callahan in GR next year. I like how he has developed in the WHL from a fourth liner to a scorer. This will fit well with how the Wings like start players on the fourth and have them move up. Hopefully he can crack the roster for a few games in two years. He is what the Wings need. A good MW who isn't a plug.
-
Why should he have removed his helmet? Neither players had visors so I don't see the need here. Some like to remove the helmet to avoid hand injuries, but IMO if visors aren't involved it isn't necessary.

Mitchell Callahan is having a very good year thus far. He has a team leading 25 points in 20 games (he was also kicked out of one), and also has 5 fighting majors. He's looking more and more like he will be able to contribute offensively and physically in a Wings' sweater a few years from now. I'd like to see him in the AHL next year, and possibly getting some games the next. While the Wings don't like to rush prospects, his style is unique in the system. Here's a link to his fights- http://www.hockeyfights.com/players/8849/fightcard/reg2011 Here's a link to his stats- http://www.whl.ca/roster/show/id/838

He's improved greatly since his draft year. I don't think anyone expects him to be a ppg player in the NHL, but his offensive ability is greatly improving. He is a lot like Rypien size wise, and may have a bit more of an offensive touch. As a 6th rounder it is hard to make an NHL squad, so it's good to see him having such an impressive year. Not many fighters/agitators/etc lead their team in scoring. I'd love to see him on the Wings' fourth line sometime within the next four years.

IMO Flip is a much better all-around player than Huds. I could see Huds putting up more points than Flip, but I don't think that he is a better hockey player in the total sense. I'm glad that the Wings have both- as long as Huds steps up the rest of the season. Huds certainly has more obvious weaknesses than Flip, but that isn't to say that he doesn't have many strengths.
-
I was at the game- it wasn't as dirty as the scoresheet looked. Boll wasn't challenged all game and the fights were mutual. Good to see CBJ blow them out.
-
At the CBJ fake tonight. Columbus is playing really well tonight. I'm surprised St. Louis hasn't started anything being down so much.
-
Draper won't be out all season and there are some good players in GR who deserve a few games up. If there are multiple Injuries, Hudler will be needed. However, what is the value of him sitting in the press box until that happens?
-
Homer can't sit forever though. When he gets back in the lineup what are the lines then? Having Huds and Flip together isn't a bad idea but I don't see how the rest of the lines work if you keep the third together.
-
How do you change the other lines to accommodate this? The only possible chance I see is moving Homer or Bert to the fourth line.
-
Hudler for Rosehill and some picks? The Leafs need some offensive depth. I like the idea of having Hudler in case of injury, but I don't think he fits with the current lineup.
-
I love Abby. He brings a unique dimension to the team and third line. He's been producing well this far- he's plus 5 in five games this far.
