  1. The refs reviewed a shot from earlier in the period, and determined it was a goal because the puck had gone through the net. Therefore, the clock had to be changed to the point when the goal was scored.
  2. Ferraro! These announcers use 'we' and 'us' too much IMO.
  3. It's amazing that two-thirds of the Griffins' fourth line could be on the Wings' fourth line in two years.

Visors Required - New NHL Players in '13-'14

NCAA is/was actually looking at going to 3/4 visors. I agree. I wonder what the rate of use would have been if players were offered the choice, but forced to pay for additional insurance themselves. I'm not a fan of the new rule, but if the NHLPA is okay with it, then I can't argue with the decision. Kids today...

Wings interested in Stalberg and Bickell

One of those is an NHL fight. Like E, Bickell doesn't seem interested in fighting at the NHL level. That is fine- he isn't a fighter (because he rarely fights) and he doesn't have a good record against NHL fighters. With the two more playoff games played, Bickell has 17 fewer hits than Abby during the 2013 playoffs. Bickell can hit well, but he isn't a frequent hitter. If Cleary is not re-signed and Bert is bought out, Bickell makes sense (if Clowe and Clarkson aren't available). However, that isn't likely to happen. Signing Bickell will also be a gamble- outside of these playoffs he hasn't proven enough to be a ~3m/yr player IMO.

Wings interested in Stalberg and Bickell

Is he is worth 1.5m/yr+ more than Abby? IMO he isn't. Bickell had much fewer hits than Abby in both the regular season and playoffs, and his one fight this season was instigated by the other player. To keep Tatar off the roster next season, the Wings need someone tougher than Abby that is a proven ~20+ goal scorer. Without significant PP time (and no PP goals), Abby was on pace for ~17 goals and led the team in ES goals (even with his bad start to the season). Bickell has 6 NHL fights in his career and has only one win. Abby had 6 NHL fights last season and two wins. Neither is a good fighter. They would both lose to Lucic (or any HW), but I'd rather have the more active hitter and fighter.

Let's Talk About Abdelkader, Plus Others

Abby did lead the Wings in ES goals, scoring more goals than either Sedins and Semin, but I do know what you mean. I would love a player like Clarkson on the Wings, but I think he will be overpaid if he reaches UFA. It looks like Clowe wants to stay in NY. Abby is beneficial in the top-6 because of the Wings' skilled center depth. That is, the Wings only have two skilled centers in Dats and Z (Mule can play top-6 center if needed). Therefore, if the Wings want two skilled players and a physical presence on each of the top-3 lines, the physical player for the third line has to be the center and two of Abby, Bert, and Mule have to be in the top-6 (or Abby and Bert if Mule isn't enough for Babcock).

    Will Brunner be back?

I hope he will be back. While his scoring slowed, he improved defensively and physically.

I don't see the Wings signing Flip and Horton, and Tootoo or Eaves is taking Emmerton's spot on that 4th line (with Helm at center) if it happens. Abby is also a player who scored 10 ES goals this season. I agree. I am not sure why Babcock never put Dats and Abby with someone more skilled than Mule. If Abby moves down, I think the Wings should go with that fourth line and keep the third line a scoring line.

IMO Bickell is redundant on the Wings. The Wings have too many players 3rd/4th liners, and Bickell will only add to that surplus. The Wings don't have much roster space, and I don't think Bickell brings enough to knock Tatar and/or Nyquist back to GR. I do miss it. That's why I'm also a big fan of having three scoring lines instead of being too skill-heavy in the top-6. I do think the Wings can get by with one 'all skill' line, as long as it allows a third scoring line, but some size in the top 6 is a positive for the team. Ferraro has improved this year after many thought he would bust, but he isn't as skilled as Tatar (more like Helm in using his speed to create offense). I'd take pre-concussion Horton any day, but I think he has slowed down in the physicality department too much to be what the Wings need. I would rather have Tatar and/or Nyquist with the Wings than Horton (at the salary he wll get). With that said, if the Wings use their buy-outs on Sammy and Bert I am for Horton.

I agree. Abby is valuable to the Wings because he bring something unique to the team. No other winger signed for next season is as physical, as good in front, or as good in the corners. Abby led the team in ES goals this season with 10. That's the same amount as Kopitar, Perry, and Marleau, and more than both Sedins, Lucic, and Semin. He also led the Wings with 120 hits (40 more than the next player). He does these things and gets paid less than 2m a year. IMO the best thing Abby playing in the top-6 does for the Wings is allow them to have three scoring lines, something the team has been missing for the past few years. As we saw in the playoffs, games are won with all four lines. On the other topic, I think Emmerton's spot is available in camp this season. However, if Helm returns, Andersson will likely take the spot. Callahan has exceeded my expectations this season. IMO he won't see NHL games until 2014 unless Tootoo is injured (and needed) before that time. He and Ferraro will be fighting for Eaves' spot when his contract is over. IMO that top-6 is too weak. Who is going to retreive the puck in the corners? Who is going to wear down the D? Who is going to play in front of the net? Those are fine powerplay lines, but I see the top lines getting pushed around by Phaneuf, Chara, Subban, etc.

    Franzen Buyout?

No, he still has trade value (not that he should be traded).

    Fraser's take on Penalty Shot

The consistency is what upsets me as well. Penalties are called, or not called, too often based on context. If the play is a slash on Frolik, then the similar slashes on non-breakaway plays should have been called throughout the game. If Abby gets called for cross-checking Kane during play earlier in the series, then Sharp should be called for cross-checking Nyquist after the whistle in the same game. IMO context shouldn't have a large role in penalties. Infractions are more apparent on scoring chances, but infractions all over the ice interrupt the creation of scoring chances.
