    Not skill. Talent.

Who Do The Wings Draft in the First Round?

Reading your first two posts, can't say I'm too convinced and sounds like you're just trying stir the pot here.

    No contract for Nabokov

I doubt Boston want Setoguchi now that they made that Wideman-Horton move. They lack a puck-moving defender.

    No contract for Nabokov

Who's going to be their goalie then? Also, I see Nabokov going to the Flyers. Especially if the caps is going up as much as speculated.

Holland Looking to sign an Enforcer

I'd rather see Abdelkader playing in the 3rd over Helm, Eaves or Miller.

Hahha. Way to turn it around. Now you're speaking about potential again. CAN YOU READ? We were talking about when players start to decline. No, it doesn't matter to me. But I can definitely say it's later than "shortly after 30" in today's hockey.Learn to read and come back after that. I said players can still have potential at the age of 28. I NEVER said anything like players still having potential at the age of 33. That's a HUGE difference. Where do these guys come from?
  7. Finnish Wing

    Zenon Konopka

Closer to 35 could be 37 for example. SHORTLY after 30 is more like 31 or 32. What are you even trying to say here? According to you I said players start to decline after 33 which I never did. Now you're trying to correct your mistake by talking about my home country? Seriously...

    Zenon Konopka

I was talking about players having still potential after 28 being possible. You don't agree with that?Where did I say like that? Maybe you should read my posts again - if you even did so in the first place. The other guy here said that players body starts to decline "shortly after" 30. I said it's closer to 35 than 30.

Who Do The Wings Draft in the First Round?

The point is you have to sacrifice something when you draft 21st. If McIlrath has the talent, physical and mental things all great why would he even drop so much then? The fact is that with a guy like Kabanov you get much greater talent but you sacrifice the mental thing. Talent and upside isn't why people are drafting McIlrath. It's because you know what you get and he's a good physical player. But it's a first round pick and this is the Detroit Red Wings. You can't teach talent, but you can fix the other things. If there's a player like McIlrath when we draft, surely there also must a player who may have less physical aspect but instead have greater talent. If drafting McIlrath wouldn't sacrifice anything he wouldn't be around when we draft. I'm not bashing McIlrath here and it was probably wrong for me to say something about his potential. Still, I know what type of player we are talking about. You have to sacrifice something. It's just the way it goes. It just don't know how it would be possible that McIlrath would be somehow different case. It's different with the top picks like Hall or Seguin. There are no risks but still great talent. Maybe it was a poor comparison but it wasn't the point of that post. I'm not talking about not picking McIlrath. I'm talking about what kinda player we pick, what do we choose to sacrifice.

What? But they just re-signed him.

Who Do The Wings Draft in the First Round?

Like Drake_Marcus said it: when you draft 21st you have to sacrifice either physical part, mental part or talent. You can't teach talent. That's a fact. You can make players more physical. Players can improve their skating etc. Players' mental issues (Kabanov) can be fixed as well. You need to draft the guy with the best upside. A guy like McIlrath will never be more than a Lilja-type player (4th d-man at best). A guy like Kabanov though... This is the Detroit Red Wings. We can fix those kinda issues. It would be stupid to not take that risk. Or a player like Pulkkinen. We would sacrifice the physical aspect there, but that can be teach either. There are just examples but: - McIlrath: sacrifice talent - Kabanov: sacrifice mental "things" - Pulkkinen: sacrifice physical game Now these are just examples, we don't know if Pulkkinen even goes in the top6. But if you've got three basically equal players you just can't sacrifice talent.

    Johnnu Boychuk

Now that the cap raised that much and Wideman was moved to FLA, I think they're gonna re-signg Boychuk.

We don't know about that yet.

Modin? I didn't know this guy fights.

    Scott Niedermayer retiring

This will probably mean Selanne retires as well. He said he'll continue if they can be competitive again and do it "one more time". If Selanne retires, Koivu will likely be go on the free market. What does this mean for Bobby Ryan then?

    Zenon Konopka

I didn't say what it reads. I said what it sounds like. That quote is new and when you look at the older ones, those had him basically saying that he's going after some guy like that. Now he only says that he WOULD like to get one, but "if it's not there, it's not there". I'd easily take Konopka if he is like some you've said. I seriously don't see a guy like Boogaard a fit here. You need to do more than just fight out there.

    Zenon Konopka

This was the quote I was speaking of: "You'd like to bring in a Brad May or an Aaron Downey-type player, but if it's not there, it's not there," Holland said. "If we can't fit it in, we would go without it. It's just impossible to address every single need in a cap world."To me that sounds like he's giving up on the enforcer thing for now.

Holland Looking to sign an Enforcer

He's a player that is basically useless when he's not fighting. He can't just start fighting if no one is going with him, so you can just ignore him and he'll take stupid penalties because he can't keep up the pace or because he's trying to instigate a fight with someone. Just because a player is "most something" doesn't make me want to get him signed. He can be effective when he's fighting but that's about it.

    Zenon Konopka

Kenny stated that earlier already. What he said in that new quote is that he WOULD like an enforcer, but it may not be possible. The way I see it, is that he's not going after one after all. Of course he can say something and do something else, but I think that new quote obviously meant he's giving up on the enforcer thing. About the quote in your sig. Did Pav really said like that? That is both confusing and hilarious.

Holland Looking to sign an Enforcer

This is what I tried to say in the Konopka thread, but I guess people believe it when you say it. Maybe they think I'm an enforcer hater or something like that. Well I'm not. I support getting an enforcer and I support fighting. But as you said players who can only fight, players like Boogaard, are basically a waste of a roster spot and cap space.

    Zenon Konopka

Why is that exactly? I do make counter-arguments if I see they're needed. I wanted to end this pointless conversation yesterday, but you seem to want to continue, which is okay by me. I'm not the one who brought out Ilari Filppula's potential, which had nothing to with this thread. It was the thread starter actually.I simply said that players who can't do anything else but fight are pretty useless in today's hockey. That obviously angered some of these guys here. I'm talking about guys who rather see a goal than a fight. Some of them probably even rather lose and see a fight than win.

I wasn't talking about you making a bold statement. But I haven't certainly made no personal attacks against you either. Can you dig out the posts where I make personal attacks towards some other posters and after than we'll see what your post history looks like?I know more about the FEL than NHL, but that doesn't mean I don't know much about the NHL as well. This forum is open for everyone, I think. Maybe you should ease with the insults yourself...

Holland Looking to sign an Enforcer

It's the way of the AHL. Not every player continues in the organization, but what do we lose when it's FA signing? Not every player in the minors can be prospects. There are always some older guys who may only play a year or two but still help the team and possibly replace injuries for the NHL team when needed.I see nothing bad with these kind of signings.
  24. Finnish Wing

    Zenon Konopka

I agree with this. I would've stopped this yesterday, but seems like some guys want more. This thread has little to do with Zenon Konopka.

    Zenon Konopka

You don't have any idea what I think. I'm not the one here who makes ridicolous statements about players I haven't even seen play. Personal attacks. Yeah right. If even half of what you said was true there... but it isn't. I thought "tough guys" like you were supposed to stand up for themselves. Did I hurt you now? It's kinda hard to argue with you as well because barely anything that you post here has any real value for the conversation. Also the outlook of your text is terrible considering you're a native English speaker.
