I'll let Kenny Holland himself explain it to you. http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2009/07/re...nd_speak_2.html Summary: Stanley Cup Hangover, Offensive cushion allowed the Red Wings to play sloppy defense and the Ozzy factor. Holland touches on all points.

Offense won't be as important as our defense (GAA). In 07-08 Wings only allowed 184 goals. There's no reason the Red Wings should give up more than 200 GAA next year. Ericsson is only going to get better and if Lilja is ready to role, we'll be golden. There's no reason why Red Wings can't win the cup next year.

Lol @ stupider. Anyone who uses the word "stupider" is more stupid than the word 'stupider'. Just some food for thought.

When Holland signed Hossa to a one year deal, he was called a 'genius' on the boards. Though the entire year while he played here, we all knew Hossa was going to be gone. Then when it happen, when we let Hossa walk, Holland is put under fire on these boards. I'm sick of hearing that 'we loss' Hossa, because he wasn't ever going to be here after his 1-year rental agreement. We all knew that. We've GAINED! We are getting younger, we got Helm and Leino (Leino for damn cheap btw) and we are getting tougher and bigger with better defensive forwards! Wings, as a whole, are getting better, not worse!

How would he get a pick from Hudler since it's Hudler's choice that he signed with the KHL? If you are saying that Holland has bad judge of character, then your argument might hold more substance if you say Holland should have been physic, or, perhaps, overpaid Hudler and promised him a 1st line spot to stay. Or maybe you could blame Babcock for hurting Hudler's feelings for not feeding his ego... As far as Hossa goes, there was reports that if he'd signed with LA, we'd gotten a pick. Another thing you need to remember, is lots of other teams know Detroit's situation and knew the Hossa situation. It appears you are just looking for a scape goat and since Kopecky is already gone, you are looking at anyone in near proximity. Edit: Lebda should have some trade value because of his cheap price tag and his defensive skills and experience. We pick on him here, but he is a good player for what he gets paid.

I get your argument and it holds some legitimacy, just not as much as you think. We're not losing 80 goals. We are losing some goals, but some guys are expected to step it up. The differential will not be enough to keep us out of the playoffs. And once the playoffs starts, (as you already know) anything can happen. Holland has 1 D-man to trade and a little bit of cap space. Most bargains are had at trade deadline anyhow. Perhaps, if needed, Holland will pull off an amazing (key) trade by deadline. I also expect training camp to be huge this year. After all, that's how Cleary earned his spot. My stance is our offense is fine. Our defense is stellar and we'll make the playoffs. In a cap world, I think Detroit is in perfect position, especially since a lot of money will free up next year and some of our older guys will leave or retire.
-
Now I know why you always get your ass beat when you go to hockey games.. Nobody likes you. Lets let just lose some of our AHL guys like we did Quincey. You-Are-Nuts. btw, who are you going to sign (with our little cap) that can score 40 goals? (making up Hudler and Sammy's loss in goals) -- That's right, nobody. So guess what squirt, there is more to hockey than just scoring goals. There's this phrase that you should learn, it'll help teach you a little hockey knowledge too, though you seem helpless... "Defense wins championships" -- and Wings will be the top 3 in the league in Defense. You're not only a *****, you're ignorant.

There was a thread up recently from a source (mlive?) that stated that Holland gave permission to Hossa to talk to other teams without asking for anything (picks) in return. He said [paraphrased] "Hossa didn't owe us anything, he took a discount to come here, we owe him that" [/paraphrased] -- i'm too lazy to look it up, but it was up about 4-7 days ago (I think) You're crazy if you think 5 guys can't score 40 goals combined (not including what Ericsson nets and Zetterberg had an off-year last year -- Zetterberg w/ Datsyuk re-united should net an extra 15-20 combined) "Wings won a Cup without Hossa, but they also had a very productive Samuelsson and Hudler in 08" -- are you suggesting Helm, Abby Leino won't be productive? Don't forget Holland wants to trade a defensemen by deadline. He'll land us more scoring...

What I'm reading in this post is our young guys should never get their chance. Let Howard sit in the AHL and rot. Ericsson, despite not playing a full season in the NHL is not going to be better than Lilja. btw, Wings just got significantly younger for next season... <doom-and-gloom> that's all I am reading from you </doom-and-gloom>

Any logical Wings fan knew that Hossa was gone if Holland signed Zetterberg. And when he signed Franzen, Hossa's fate as a Red Wing was forever sealed. So in all fairness we didn't lose Hossa, he was just a fluke and a luck that he was here. Nobody, including you expected Hossa to sign a one-year deal as a DRW (according to your posts in the official Hossa signing thread from last year). So again, we didn't lose something that we didn't expect, he was a bonus, that's all he was... And I am sure you realize that we won a cup without him. In fact, I think we would have won a cup in 09 without him, because that money might have been spent on someone clutch for the finals.... but that's water under the bridge. Holland signed filppula for this reason. He is suppose to be one of our role guys that never had his real chance yet. Now that Hossa is gone, he gets to show us what he is made of (see the Franzen situation). Helm isn't Kopecky's replacement, Abby will be if he plays. Or even Ryan Oulahen will be. Kops is easy to replace, he was a tangible. Filppula, Helm, Leino, Abby, Oulahen and wiggle room w/ a defensemen to trade, we're golden. I can imagine there's about 26+ other teams that wish they had our problems.
-
Why do you keep saying we are losing 80 GOALS? Are you suggesting that all the replacements (Helm / Leino / xxxx / etc) won't score any goals? Are you expecting Zetterberg to having another off year? The replacement guys WILL score some goals, I promise! They will also be more defensive sound. Wings defense (as Kenny Holland said) will realize they don't need to take the year off like they did in 08/09 [paraphrased]. If the replacements only score 40 goals, then we're only losing 40 goals, not 80. In addition, our PK and defense will be better. Oh, and I think Ericsson has proven that he can also score some big goals, too. Like I said, I understand that you are panicking and think the world is coming to the end-and feel the need to vent... but trust me, the Red Wings are going to be fine. The sun will still come up tomorrow. EDIT: are you also suggesting that Filppula getting more ice time will not do anything with it? Really?
-
Clearly a venting post. And that's okay. But you need to realize there is more to hockey than just 'putting in goals'. Hudler was undersized and played like it. He wasn't that good of skater and his defensive game was very unimpressive, especially against bigger guys. Sure he put up a lot of points in the regular season and had a nack for scoring shootout goals, but @ $3 mil (and our current financial situation - along with Hudler's size / defensive game) it's better for the team (overall) that he walks. btw, I'm not a moen fan either.. I'm (probably the only guy on the forum) that thinks Holland should just ride with AHL players till trade deadline and use that money and trade Lebda or Lilja for a forward. We'll be fine. (and better off)
-
Holland should go after nobody. We should fill holes with AHL guys (let them get some experience) and wait for the trade deadline and trade a defensemen. The best deals are usually had at trade deadline... we just need the cap space to afford it. Without Hudler and moving one D-man, we'll be in great shape.
-
I might be the minority here, but I am glad that Hudler won't be back. In the long run, we'll be a better team without him. His size was always a huge concern for me. He's has always been too easy to push around and couldn't handle playing against physical players. Now Holland can move on to finding the right pieces so we can win the cup next year.

Major meltdown in Chicago. Can't wait to see how this fire sale pans out. Hey, Campbell and Huet are both listed on eBay, starting bid; $0.99 cents- Lol.

Per http://twitter.com/TheFourthPeriod Wonder what kind of payout he got from the Hawks incompetence?
-
Wrong. Your hockey intelligence is very limited, obviously, Zetterberg AND Franzen did NOT have their big contracts in 2009, their contracts does not kick in till this coming season, which is why (Holland) Red Wings signed him to a 1-year contract. We resigned Zetterberg and Franzen for a bargain price and let Hossa walk. This is why Hossa's on your team now, because Hawks had cap room because they didn't sign their big top players yet. And now they can't. Your GM really screwed your team over and it's not even funny, it's sad because I was hoping another original six team would start building up to become another powerhouse in the league like Detroit is. I must say though, this offseason has been a real treat to watch. Chicago has really turned into a circus show... 'amusing' is an understatement. And next year is going to be even more fun watch! Self destruction in .....3.....2......1 (KRAH-BOOM!) Expect the trolls to start rolling in, a Hawk fan has started a thread about LGWs on their forum -----> http://boards.chicagoblackhawks.com/index....=34217&st=0

Jeremy Williams & Kris Newberry sign with Wings / GR?

Looks like Newbury will be our Downey replacement; Downey 2.0? -
Saying they would pursue a player is "tampering"? I thought this was going to be something juicy, like Burke broke into their homes a 3am and was "tampering" with their stuff.
-
Perhaps Hawks can sign their big three if they trade Barker, Hossa, Seabrook, Sharp and Sopel. Then it might work. (providing none of them have a NTC)
-
So what you are saying is Kane will soon be on the Red Wings? We could probably afford him next year. But I think Toews would be the better option.
-
The only credible source that I seen was Holland offered Hossa 10 years @ (3.75 million) to 4 million cap hit. Not sure where you are getting your information. mlive: http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/20...en_red_win.html & sportingnews: http://www.sportingnews.com/nhl/article/20...s-10-year-offer

If there's any hope for more upside to his game, then he's going to the right place. Wings provide the best player development in the league. -
Who they gonna cut?
