I too am very old school. I go a long way back. I remember as a kid sitting in the living room on Saturday nights with a bowl of popcorn watching Hockey Night in Canada. I was watching Howe, Delvecchio, Abel, Lindsay, Hull, Richard...you know, the legends. I got to a game at the Olympia back in the 70's, but for the most part, it was the radio...the good old days of Budd Lynch and Bruce Martyn on WJR. Through the "Darkness with Harkness" and all that misery, I stuck with them. But it really hit a peak in '97. I remember watching Stevie carry the Cup, with tears in my eyes. Partly because we finally won it, and partly because my mom wasn't alive to see it happen. I cried the night of the limo accident. Absolutely broke my heart. When we won it all again in '98, I watched as Vladdie gave the team their inspiration. My friend Sarah and I both cried when he came out on the ice and they handed him the Cup. It was meant to be. I never really had a "hockey hero" until 2001, and a shy, soft-spoken Russian stole my attention. I cannot even imagine this game without him. Among my recent favorite memories was the 7-0 blowout of Patrick Wah in '02, and the three overtime final game when Igor Larionov scored the winner. We sat up til after 1AM to see that finish. I also remember game three against Vancouver. When Nick shot the goal from center ice, I looked at my husband and the other guys in the bar watching the game (there were about a dozen of us altogether and the guys were all fishermen), and said, "That changes everything. We're gonna take it all." Over the years, I've gotten my other half to where he likes the game. Not as much as I do, but he does indulge me by going to TC for camp every year, and as many games as possible. Been to three games so far this year, and I'm going to be ordering tickets for two more on Monday (Nashville and Minnesota in March). These are my boys, win or lose, right or wrong. I've had the pleasure of meeting most of them. Incredible gentlemen. I'm proud to wear red and white.
