the kovalchuk is just the deal that exposes how bad some of the contracts Lou gave out (in the recent past) that are on the devils. If they managed the cap well with their previous deals, Kovalchuk at $6.7m cap hit shouldn't be a problem. But who (other than the Devils) wants the contracts the Rolston or Zubrus or Salvador has? Half the current roster is overpaid. And the guys they let go like Rafalski and Niedermayer went on to win Cups with their new team. Zajac is probably the only contract they could move but they wouldn't. i thought Chicago's cap woes were terrible, but at least they could trade their players away and get decent draft picks in return. NJ's situation is way worse.

and why do people say Lou is still a good GM? his moves since the cap era have been terrible. Is Kovalchuk really worth it?

we have to remember that for all the crap Campbell gets for his albatross contract he is still a decent top 4 blue liner. when he got injured from Ovechkin's hit last season the Hawks struggled mightily in the games he missed
