Shea Weber fined for Zetterberg "headslam"
RedFlag85 replied to Manny>Ozzie(by a long shot)'s topic in General
I'm not arguing about what's fair. Players have a union/CBA. Coaches are considered management. Which means no union or CBA. Under the current CBA, $2,500 is the maximum Weber can be fined. It's not fair but it is what it is. -

What's done is done. Shanny has said this will factor into any other questionable actions Weber takes. We all knew he wouldn't be suspended, as the NHL makes more exception to their own rules than congress. Hopefully the Wings make them pay in goals against, and send these Chuckelheads to Dollywood. -

Coaches aren't unionized, therefore not bound by the $2,500 MAXIMUM fine players are. -
Stop crying already. The series hasn't even started.

He'll be back. Anyone saying he's too old, and over paid don't know what they're talking about. You're so used to having the best D-man in the world, you have zero idea of how f*cked we'd be without him.

Last Friday I was listening to the local Metro Detroit Sports station, 97.1 The Ticket. The subject that dominated the airwaves was the issue of throwing Octopi on the ice. I had an idea. I was going to call 97.1 during Valenti and Foster (Highest rated show) and challenge the radio station to set up a fund. A fund to mail Gary Bettman as much Octopi as we as a fan base could afford. Mail him 20 tons of Calamari attached with a simple note saying, "Go Wings!" Unfortunately, I was en route to work and didn't have the time to call. I got the idea from a few years back when those fans of that CBS show "Jericho" mailed tons of peanuts to CBS to force them to make a second season. It worked. Maybe even LGW could organize an Octopi Blockade of NHL HQ.

WTF. Vs is showing some program about the 2008 Wings. Where's the ******* game?! Edit: Found it. It's on FSD+

Watching the Wings is reminding me of that "And not a single f*ck was given" meme.

I had hoped Big E would develop the mean streak he showed occasionally in the AHL. Being somewhat of an amateur military history buff, the argument of Enforcers being a dying breed, or obsolete reminds me of the issue of air superiority during the Vietnam war. Let's try this analogy: During the late 50s- early 60s, "experts" deemed an air to air cannon was obsolete, with missiles being the wave of the future. Dog fights were declared dead. The future would be interceptors engaging bombers from long range with missiles Fighters like the F-4 Phantom thus were built without an internal cannon and relied solely on AA missiles. When the Vietnam war broke out the US found itself fighting lightweight cannon equipped MiGs in close range dogfights. Missiles were unreliable at this range. The win/loss ratio was close to 1/1. An unacceptable the statistic for world's most powerful military. Later, cannon pods were added to F-4's and tactics employed during the Korean war were updated and employed by pilots, dramatically increasing the win/loss ratio in the air in favor of the Americans. What I'm trying to get at is as soon as you declare something "dead" or "obsolete" and cut it out of your program, that's exactly what your opponent will try and utilize against you.

No trades. This is the reason we over ripen players. Guys like Kindl, Mursak, and Tatar would already be on active rosters elsewhere. Their job right now is to step up and fill the gap. Something they've been prepared to do. We have guys like Helm, and Eaves stepping up and fulfilling the roles designated to them. If anything, you guys who go into panic mode and scream, "Trade! Trade! Trade!" illustrate why the Detroit Red Wings are superior to every team in terms of management and preparedness. They don't need to, and don't hit the panic button when the chips are down. They are the pinnacle of professionalism in sports, and a benchmark f how to run any organization. So in closing to the Doomsayers, Sit back, relax tonight and watch the game. Then come on LGW and post in the Tatar/Eaves/Helm watch threads about how the Wings have found diamonds in the rough.

Good for coach Lewis, although with his curiously shaped mustache, coaching Germany would generate way more lulz.

I'm glad to see the Blues doing well. The post season hasn't had the same feeling without them.

So does anyone else hope Lidstrom comes back next season?
RedFlag85 replied to Reilly's topic in General
Absolutely. Uncle Nick still has it. He probably always will. However, I think his desire to raise his kids in Sweden will make this his last hurrah, Cup or no Cup. (Hopefully with a Cup) -
Here's my take. I think nationally (The U.S) there is a certain stigma in Sports media about talking Hockey. I think a lot of national Sports media outlets outside of the midwest don't consider Hockey a legit big market sport. They see the fighting, the missing teeth, the French Canadian accents, and the goofy last names, and dismiss it as 2nd tier sports entertainment. I think this carries over to The Ticket. Valenti and Foster. They always complain about Detroit as a sports town. In their mind, you're not a "real" sports town unless Football is number one, Baseball is number two, and Basketball is number three. They probably try to down play how popular Hockey is in Detroit to their out of town colleagues as to not feel ashamed that Detroit doesn't fit into the neat Sportscenter mold ESPN has created for us. To me it's insulting, considering how big Hockey is in Michigan. Even besides the Wings. You have the AHL, CCHA, OHL, not to mention all the youth and beer leagues. Hell, six players from the 2010 Men's Ice Hockey team are from Michigan. You ever try calling into one of their shows? What happens is, the screener picks up, asks you your name and location, then asks what you want to discuss. If your answer isn't on topic to the discussion, or isn't compelling enough to warrant an on air call, they hang up. I've tried to call in to talk Wings only to hear, "Sorry they're talking (insert: Michigan, MSU, Lions, Tigers, Tiger Woods) ::click::"

Hell of a Career Malts had. Watching him, Drapes and Mac as a kid with my grand parents will always be memories I will cherish. Me and the boys will be sure to raise a glass to Malts this weekend.

To me, what sets this apart from other (not all) Athletes setting up similar youth camps, is their motive. A lot of Athletes will 'give back' solely for the brownie points in earns their reputation. However, given Pav's temperament, I think it's safe to say he does it because it's enjoyable to him.

Beat me to it. Past his prime? Sure. Not among the elite Goaltenders in the league? You're off your f*cking rocker.

I know I'll get eaten alive on here for this, but.. I think there should be 2 games for the winter classic on NY Day. One at noon, and one during the evening. I know, I know, you'll argue that it cheapens the experience, but is having "ZOMFG, Crosby vs. Ovechkin in Heinz Field!!!!1!" any better? You could do something like have a couple lesser contenders, or up and coming contenders early on in the day, say Colorado vs. Minnesota, and then a couple heavyweights during prime time, like s***sburgh vs. Washington, or Wings vs. (Insert victim)

I always watch Playoff games at my buddy's house, with 7-8 other people. A lot of them aren't too savvy on Hockey, and are always quick to blame the refs for the Wings losses. I always tell them that there's no conspiracy, the reason the Wings lost is because they didn't play 60 minutes, or the other team came to win, etc. etc. But, I swear, this series, I found myself Homering it up and ranting at the refs like everyone else. I know the refereeing in the NHL is bad, really bad, but this series takes the friggen cake. I really hate how the NHL out right refuses to admit that their refereeing is subject to interpretation of the refs on any given night.
