Why didn't they claim him the first time, then?

It's the economy. People just can't afford to browse LGW anymore.

Tell the Illitch Family to Drop "Presented by Amway"

"Could you imagine a world with no lawyers?" -
Well then better get our top 6 revamped.

Am I the only one who doesn't think that the Sharks physically wore us down? They had a forecheck that kept our top guys from breaking it out, and a big issue with that was team defense as a whole. Not to mention a terrible penalty kill Phoenix did in '10, but they were a non factor in '11.

I don't think that's the issue, Konnan. And what bill? The Wings have been making bank without a primary corporate sponsor for a decade. -
How long before headshots are embellished by garbage players?

Was clean, and it looked like Cooke got his bell rung a tad. -
Yowzers. We got Brunnstrom for free. Wings management wanted Brunnstrom for a reason over Leino. This is their chance to see if they can make him into the player they intended. Nystrom didn't have enough talent or value to a roster that is going to be missing the playoffs by a mile. If his only attribute is toughness (which appears to be the only thing Minnesota apparently didn't need), then I don't see the need in clogging up roster spots for him. Because for him to make it to the AHL he would have to get through waivers. And like you said he had a good enough training camp to warrant a contract and roster spot. Ville Leino went to the minors because Detroit was incredibly deep and they didn't have to risk losing him to waivers. Much better? I think you overvalue his role on the team. Detroit is going to need up and coming scorers more and more as guys like Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and Franzen get older and older. Brunnstrom has potential there, and it would be nuts to waive him and risk losing him just because a "tough" fourth liner was waived from a bottom feeder.

It's ironic that Forsberg talks about how his best times were "always beating the Red Wings", and those same Wings end up beating them 3-0 on the same night. It was a funny comment, but I don't mind it blowing up in their fans faces. Really excited to see the next game. I haven't been able to see the first two because of previous engagements but a 2-0 start is always great.

http://redwings.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=594708 It's a whole "energy awareness" thing. Cool picture of the old melted casing, though.

No, I was simply asking a question about it. I didn't challenge your opinion. I asked a question about a suggestion brought up. Not a big deal.
-
Isn't the point that to get Nystrom and actually use him we would have to put a player on waivers? And since Brunnstrom was suggested, doesn't that make it important to the case at hand? I was simply asking a question about the players and curious why newfy would think it is possibly a good idea to waive a player who had a great training camp who we got for nothing for someone who couldn't find a place on a bottom feeder.
-
Do you believe any of the players you mentioned would be worth putting Brunnstrom on waivers?
-
Stupid idea. Brunnstrom earned a contract. Nystrom earned the AHL. It would be a terrible idea to get a player with Brunnstrom's potential for nothing and waive him instead of other players who don't have the potential and are much more easily replaceable. All for a player who will likely won't get picked up by a single NHL team for free.

Online petitions never work. -
Then waive Miller? Brunnstrom could be a damn fine role player, and we got him for nothing. It would be asinine to waive him for a less skilled role player who has a "tough" side. And you are going simply based on that one attribute.

It's possible. Of course like I said, it is just about impossible to accurately gauge the amount of deterrence a guy like Shawn Thornton would be to a Matt Cooke. And with Shanahan trying to show the players they aren't kidding around with suspensions, it may not be as big of an issue as it used to be. The one question is whether you want the league to be the ones to deter cheap play, or the players. Or if a little of both makes the most sense. Personally, I have no problem with having a fighter in the lineup just to provide entertainment. Even if the Joe is always sold out there is nothing wrong with more jersey sales and TV revenue.
-
The biggest issue with fighting debates is how much you can attribute things to "deterrence" when you cannot truly see it in the majority of cases. The May fight against Boll was one of the few times you see a player's actions basically stopped completely due to the actions of an enforcer. Regarding the other fights normally mentioned, like the Lappy fight against Downey, there is simply a response to a cheap shot or a run at a star player. Those aren't really evidence of deterrence because none of us have any idea what Lappy would have done if he didn't fight Downey (and based on his actions later, he is still steaming and ready to run someone over). The flip side is it can be argued that Downey was the lightning rod that kept Lappy going for him and none of the other Wings players. This is why enforcer debates go nowhere. It is all about opinions based on past recollections of select events, and not based on concrete numbers or statistics.

I'm sorry, but didn't Moore fight Cooke in that game?

Because you need to understand the pitfalls that ALL leagues face in regards to something that requires knowledge of intent before saying how the league is a joke. In all honesty it has taken great strides and I don't see the NHL getting the "diving" card that soccer will have for all eternity. I can't remember the last time I saw an obstruction call, and you are arguing against something I didn't say anyway. I never said they shouldn't call diving. I'm just saying during a full speed game where the referees make enough mistakes, it is understandable to see why you don't see that many diving calls. Should Semin have been suspended? Absolutely. But is the league really a joke simply because they have some issues in the sport like all leagues?
-
There was hardly any time left on the clock, for starters. Second, why the motivation to go after MacArthur if he didn't feel like there was foul play? They aren't comparable.
-
How does Soccer, Baseball, or the NBA handle diving? It's honestly not something that only has to do with the NHL. Due to the gray area with "intent", most leagues don't lay the hammer down on dives and embellishments.
-
They have diving and embellishment in the NBA as well. Hell, plenty of baseball players feign injury or contact with the ball on a pitch to get calls their way. The NHL isn't a joke for having people who dive. It is simply one of many sports that have people who demean their respect around their respective leagues by diving.
