The single biggest scapegoat of the Red Wings in the last 20+ years...

The difference is I think the Osgood loving (myself included) balances out the Osgood hating. It's a healthy balance. -

The fact that Hossa didn't work out here is going to haunt me for years to come. He could have been a monster in Detroit. -

Cujo was bent over and absolutely rammed by Detroit fans and management. I can't blame his comments (assuming they are true) and really wish he was treated better here. Eva: Legace choked in 06. Nothing around that. His short career afterward only reinforces that fact. -
Buff can do whatever he wants. Just because he wears the jersey doesn't mean the team is somehow jinxed. He is celebrating winning the cup and celebrating his new team at the same time.

Kaberle will likely walk because Burke continues to overrate the guy and will not get a serious trade done with what he is asking for. No GM in his right mind will trade for Kaberle and give up the assets Burke wants for him.

The Red Wings were the 3rd or 4th most valuable team in the league last year. How about your team?

We've got the ice tonight, 8-9, 3rd floor.

Yeah, I'm sure we wouldn't be able to get 20 skaters and two goalies to play pickup from this board. -
I'm sorry, I meant two seasons ago to Chara.
-
Name one. Lidstrom was robbed of the Norris two seasons ago over a defenseman who had a statistically worse season with a statistically much better starting goaltender (Vezina winner) and another defenseman who plays in a system where defense is considered optional. Last season I think either him or Pronger should have been given the third nomination over Green.

Normally when a team leads a game in hits it means that they don't have the puck as much as the other guy. Either way, I'm not going to use this study to make a broad statement about how the team should be structured.

Should I complain about the jersey customization?
Doc Holliday replied to Behind Enemy Lines in CO's topic in General
Might as well file some sort of complaint. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. -
Crosby doesn't suck but he's a whiney little bitch, however.

Would have been so much better if he was wearing a trench coat like a 20s gangster.

I think he has a point guys. Oh wait, I forgot: End of story.

First, Niemi is a horrible example. Everyone here knows he is not a hot shot simply because he won a cup. Every single bad game Osgood had he ended up shining the next. After the Yotes took the series lead 2-1 Osgood won the next three. After the Blues tied game 3 with less than a minute to go Osgood kept the team in it at overtime (with a scary almost goal to boot) and the Wings ended up winning 2 of the next 3. After the Dallas OT loss Osgood posted a 2-0 shutout in the sixth game. After the 4 goals against in game 2 against Washington Osgood let in 2 goals the next two games. Osgood's play in that playoff only got better as the playoffs went on and his role in winning the cup was severely underrated simply because the media focused on the three notable long shot goals he gave up. However I don't think anyone considered Osgood the MVP of the team simply because he won. Finally, Howard let in some stinkers, and was not the Jimmy Howard we saw in the regular season. It could very well be adaptation to playoff hockey and I'm fine with that, but you cannot say he played fine in the playoffs. A 2-1 deficit is much easier to fight back from than a 3-0 deficit and the tying goal in game 3 that led to the 3-0 Sharks series lead destroyed the team. And his rebound control is a big weakness in his game. Improvable, but still a weakness he needs to address.

We'll see.
-
You honestly don't think Howard had a problem with rebound control, nor he had issues in the playoffs?
-
The team will be better (unlike Colombus for Mason) which will keep Howard's sophomore slump in check if he has one. Preseason will really show if Osgood can come back to form and be a capable backup. Let's hope so.

How does a 5-6 defenseman solve this "problem"? Once again, signing a defenseman who plays very few minutes a night doesn't address that "problem" the way you would like to think. For starters, the 09 team relied on their offense way too much, which is why people overlooked their defensive struggles. 2010's team was riddled with injuries, and were much more gritty having to play depth players during a good chunk of the season. So I don't see the correlation at all. I don't believe the team has been bad defensively simply because of crease crashing, because Kronwall was just awful in all aspects of defense last season (crease clearing aside), and Stuart just fell off during the second half. If Stuart and Kronwall play the way they are supposed to, I don't think there will be much of a problem with the team's defensive play.
-
If you watch the game again you will notice there were a large number of rebound chances knocked away by Detroit's defensemen. Agree to disagree I suppose. Defensemen don't HAVE to destroy a guy to nullify him from making a play. And I don't think a depth defenseman is going to change that a helluva lot if he only plays <10 minutes a night.
-
See: Jimmy Howard's 40+ save game against LA. Countless rebounds knocked away by Detroit's defensemen. Helped Howard win the game for them. Either way, I honestly haven't seen that any more than I have seen it since 2007. Hasn't kept the Wings from winning games like other things that I have noticed.
-
It's nice to have that in a 3rd line defenseman but it isn't something the team is lacking. It's not like Detroit was victim to a plethora of close-crease goals last season.
-
I don't think the critique was having a tough defenseman, but the "need" to have a tough defenseman in the lineup. The team isn't trying to be the in your face teams they were in the late 90s. And I don't see how this signing is "great", either. Just a bottom pairing guy who has some injury issues. Nothing much to praise or hate about it. We'll have to see at training camp/preseason how this guy adapts to the system.
