Osgood to fill in Larry Murphy's job

Regardless, Ozzie is just a seat filler until Pavel hangs up his skates & goes into broadcasting.

Osgood to fill in Larry Murphy's job

I can't make the chat he'll have on the Freep today. Hope someone else takes the time to ask Ozzie's opinion of Miller Lite & dollar hot dogs.

    Any new Helm Updates?

The cynic in me says we need to get the Darren Helm voodoo doll away from Cory Emmerton.

Wings sign Stephen Weiss, 5-years, $24.5m

Or, you know, maybe he'll meet most of them during the Winter Classic festivities.

    Canadian Olympic Jerseys Leaked?

I do believe the shiny somethings on the shoulders are maple leaves as well. I'll also point out that if you look closely, the leaf on the front has a gold border too.

    Prospects Tournament

In addition to the top line (Sheahan, Jurco, Pulkkinen) and Jarnkrok, Ryan Sproul (2 games) & Max Nicastro (25 games) have also gotten AHL experience and don't forget that Alexei Marchenko's been playing in the KHL with CSKA Moscow. Certainly not all pre-AHL talent on the roster. BTW, love hearing that Sheahan played nearly 20 minutes in last night's game & that the top line looked absolutely filthy on the cycle at points.

    Nashville Perds

Really go meta and do a Parks & Rec night with a waffle give-away during a visit from the Leafs. Personally, I just want to see them hand the broadcast booth over to Crazy Ira and The ****** for a period. Edit: ****** doesn't get past the censor? I guess I'll have to refer to them as Crazy Ira and The McGuire then.

    Any new Helm Updates?

Attempt to just lower expectations or really a concern? Helm admits to only being partially pain free: http://www.freep.com/article/20130904/SPORTS05/309040113

Buffalo Sabres unveil new third jerseys

Just amazing. Hockey sweaters in general are by far the best jersey types in all of professional sports. It takes a special kind of effort to really f' one up & Buffalo, this goes beyond f'ed up. Congrats

Now if Nyquist switches back to 89, I guess I'll have to buy some lottery tickets soon.

Wouldn't be too surprised if Andersson ended up switching to 18 this season.

How much do the Wings need another defenseman?

Or if they didn't think at the time they were getting enough back from the Flyers or that their fans wouldn't put up losing their top d pairing for all of an extra 1st round draft pick the next four seasons, which are never sure things & could signal that they were in a rebuilding mode and see ticket sales drop, they could have decided to pay him in the short term with the idea of still exploring the trade market later when they might be able to get more value for him. And while the Wings don't have cap room this season, they very well might next season. As I already mentioned, even if the cap doesn't go up, they have a little over $18.5m in cap space available. Given that a trade for Weber would probably include a couple of roster players, it is certainly within the realm of possibility that the Wings could fit Weber on the payroll. Let's say Nyquist & Smith go to Nashville in the trade & Tootoo is traded this season. Now you've got $20.6m to work with after deferring Alfie's bonus this season to 2014. Weber's cap hit reduces that to $12.8m for re-signing Ericsson, maybe Alfie, Tatar, DeKeyser, a backup to Jimmy, & fill out the rest of the spots (2-4 forwards & a d-man or 2) with cheap UFA pickups or youngsters from GR. It's not impossible, especially since it's very doubtful that Nashville will do anything until the trade deadline at the earliest given that they've already paid Weber $13m for this season back on July 1. Improbable? Maybe, but not impossible.

How much do the Wings need another defenseman?

One very important reason the Preds might trade him is based on how his contract is actually structured. While his cap hit is $7.8m, he will be owed $14m per year through the 2015-16 season & then it drops to $12m a year the two after that. The Preds obviously didn't have to pay him the full $14m last season because of the lockout so they had that working in their favor in matching the Flyers' offer. It's going to be a much more difficult contract for them to work around beginning this season given that Weber accounts for roughly a quarter of their entire payroll, which is already on an internal cap. Also, don't forget that the Preds & Flyers were actually taking trade before Holmgren floated out the offer sheet last off season. The Preds just didn't think they were getting enough value back in the trade & Holmgrem got tired of waiting around so he tried to structure an offer he though the Preds wouldn't be able to match. The Preds have plenty of motivation to still explore trading Weber now that they can but it will all come down to a balance of getting out from under that contract & getting enough value back to where they don't deplete their roster too much, struggle in the standings, & more importantly struggle to sell tickets. It will all come down to whether or not their management thinks that Weber at $14m a year still earns them more profit than a boat load of younger & cheaper players if the package they get back allows them to still compete & sell tickets. Edit: Adding a note on why I think a Weber trade will happen before or at the draft next year instead of happening this season. The way his contract is structured, only $1m of the $14m he was owed this season was salary. The other $13m was a signing bonus that's paid on July 1 of each year. The Preds had to pay that this year because of the one year freeze on trading him after matching the Flyers' offer, which just expired back on July 24th. I think they'll want get a full season out of Weber for their $14m & trade him off before July 1, 2014 to avoid that next $13m payout.
  15. I lean towards wanting to see 40/13/11 & 93/90/14 myself

How much do the Wings need another defenseman?

And now that they're not in the same division/conference, maybe the Wings would have a shot at him if the Preds did put him on the market. If it does happen, it's going to take a combination of NHL level talent, can't miss prospects, and at least a #1 pick to land him imo. And while the Wings don't have cap room right now for that type of move, come next off season with expectations of a rising cap & some contracts coming off the board, they might be able to pull it off. Even taking this year's $64.3m cap into next season, the Wings have $18.5m in cap space with 2 forward, 2 d-men, & 1 backup goalie spot to fill. Granted, I think trading for Weber would mean probably losing Nyquist & probably Smith though from the big club's roster. Edit: Just to throw it out there, who here would approve if this happened next June? To Detroit: Weber To Nashville: Nyquist, Smith, Sproul or Ouellet, & the Wings 2014 #1 pick

    Keep Tootoo, Drop Cleary

That doesn't work. Pick another player to lose on top of your suggestion of Miller or Eaves plus Emmerton if you want to bring Morrow in too. The Wings are already two players over the roster limit.

    Change to goalie pads.

Didn't the NBA already try that during the Bad Boys era?

    USA Olympic '14 Jerseys

Hockey sweaters, regardless of league/team/national designs, are still the best jerseys of any major sport. Leave it to Nike though to screw that up. Here's USA Hockey's release on the new jersey btw: http://olympics.usahockey.com/news_article/show/279876?referrer_id=844349

Preds Managemant Charging Hawks Fans Double

And bringing MLB style tiered pricing for premier games to the NHL are the Chicago Blackhawks & Toronto Maple Leafs: http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2013-08-20/sports/ct-spt-0821-blackhawks-chicago-20130821_1_300-level-seats-single-game-tickets-canadiens http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/story/2013/08/21/toronto-leafs-tickets-tiered-pricing.html The first 2 teams of many in the coming years I would imagine.

    Samuelsson: IR to All-Star?

So when Kenny finds a trading partner in the Western Conference to send him to...
  24. No, you're right there. The only similarity one might be able to strike between the two is that of course Bourque requested to be moved, but that's really as far as the similarities go.

Datsyuk wearing "C" during the Olympics?

With all the political garbage that goes into building the Russian roster, their captain will absolutely come from the KHL ranks. That means rewarding Kovalchuk for being a good Russian & turning his back on the NHL so he will end up getting the C on his jersey. This is the same national team after all that put the C on Aleksey Morozov, who had spent the previous 6 seasons in the RSL/KHL, during the 2010 Olympics over the likes of Kovalchuk, Ovechkin, Malkin, & Datsyuk. If I had to put money on it, they'll give Kovalchuk the C & A's to Ovechkin & Malkin.
