Causation problem there: His play didn't change after or because of the Kane fight at all. Nearly a year after the Kane fight (April 10, 2010) is when he got his big suspension for the final 10 games of the season & the first round of the playoffs because of his elbow to the head of Ryan McDonagh. (March 20, 2011) Let's also take into account the knee hit on Ovie that he didn't get suspended for in February of that same season & then just a few days later he did get suspended for 4 games for a hit from behind on Fedor Tyutin. The league going after him with escalating suspensions, losing out on salary because of it, & his coach sitting him down in the off season to tell him to cut it out is what changed his game, not because of potential retribution on the ice from an enforcer or otherwise.

How many of his fights last season were those of the "staged" variety (opening faceoff, only due to his past history w/ a player, etc) instead of a fight that was actually precipiated by in game action or about changing the momentum of the game? Mostly what I can recall are the former which personally, I really don't see much value in. The only significant one I can remember of the "keeping the flies off" variety, to use Babcock's saying, was him stepping in to a fight that was already developing between another player & Ericsson, who had just dropped his gloves, when Tootoo stepped in & started throwing down. It just might be a failing memory on my part, but I don't remember Tootoo providing much of any deterence/momentum changing fights at all of the ones he had last season. Feel free to correct me if I'm off here.

Signed Wings sign Nyquist to 2-year, $1.9m deal ($950k/yr cap hit)
ogreslayer replied to Jersey Wing's topic in General
Yes, Aflie's bonus can & most likely will be applied to the 2014-15 season. If all bonuses are deferred, the Wings actually sit at roughly $640k over the cap ceiling at the moment so just trading Tootoo or Eaves alone would get them back under. They have to get rid of 2 players to get back to the 23 man roster limit though, not to just get under the cap. -

San Jose Sharks decide to use practice jerseys from now on...

To be fair, it's not just Wings fans that think they have one of the greatest jerseys/logos in the sport if not the greatest: http://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/27471-The-Hockey-News-NHL-Jersey-Rankings.html http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1304679-ranking-the-nhls-home-uniforms#/articles/1304679-ranking-the-nhls-home-uniforms/page/31 http://espn.go.com/espn/playbook/story/_/id/8298736/uni-watch-power-rankings-rates-nhl-uniforms-1-30 http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/nhl-logo-power-rankings-from-stunning-to-ugly/ -

Personally, I think Tatar has the potential to become a world class pest too. -
Given that Tootoo is currently on the roster & Cleary is not, this thread is as relevant as a "Keep Tootoo, Drop Crosby" thread would be. And given that Kenny will already have a tough enough time trimming the roster by the two forwards he has to drop just to get to the roster limit, Cleary showing back up in a WIngs jersey is extremely unlikely unless he buys a ticket to a game.

There's a saying that pops into my mind when contemplating whether or not the new Sharks jerseys are an improvement on the old and that is... you can't polish a turd -

Agreed and even if there are no injuries, short term or otherwise, I doubt we'll see any roster moves until the very last days of the pre-season. -
Simple answer: The Wings. When they engage & play their game, there's no team (East or West) that they can't beat. It's when they get lazy, don't show up on time, etc. that things go wrong. So, the Wings are the team I fear the most.

Salary paid to players outside the NHL still count towards the cap but in the case of a 35+ player, there is cap relief of $100k if the player's assigned to the minors after the first year of the contract. So sending Sammy & Bert to GR, once they clear waivers, means the Wings would be below the roster limit but still over the cap by ~$440k. Edit: AT the roster limit, not below. -

Not true. Nyquist is still waiver exempt as of right now. As soon as he plays 2 more games in the NHL this season though, his exemption expires. -

With deferring bonuses until the 2014-15 season, the Wings are currently ~$640k above the cap & 2 players above the roster limit. -

I was figuring a 1 year at ~$1m but see no issues with 2 years either. -
signed Wings sign Alfredsson to 1-year, $3.5m deal (+$2m bonuses)

As weird as Val Filppula working out at Michigan State with a bunch of current Wings players still in his Wings gear? Just another case of the media trying to make something out of nothing here with the Alfie situation. Will be so happy when camps start & there's actual hockey news they can cover. -
Source: http://www.theleftwinglock.com/2013/08/19/training-camp-alumni-and-celebrity-roster-announced/ Also to avoid confusion, this is not the roster for the Winter Classic Alumni games, it's a charity alumni event held during training camp.

Not sure this is the actual "nuke" but according to this, the Sens are losing $9-10m a year. http://www.ottawacitizen.com/sports/Under+Eugene+Melnyk+Senators+have+lost+million/8799118/story.html -

If you mean his buyout pay, that's 2/3rds of his remaining salary spread out over twice the remaining years of the contract. It's 2/3rds for 26+ & 1/3rd for <26. No special treatment for 35+ as far as buyouts go. And as stated a few times in this thread, it's really irrelevant now because Sammy can't be bought out any more, either ordinary course or compliance. -

ogreslayer replied to sjr2012's topic in General
Regular aka ordinary course buyouts had to be done during the same period that the compliance buyouts were done which expired back on July 4th. Or more correctly, compliance buyouts had to happen during the long-standing window for ordinary course buyouts because those rules existed prior to the new CBA & compliance buyouts to get under the new cap. The Wings missed their window to buy out Sammy's contract, compliance or regular/ordinary course. The window doesn't open until the end of The Cup finals in June of 2014 & by that time, Sammy will be without a contract anyway. Now if they had done an ordinary course buyout on his contract in June, the cap hit would have been $1m each in 2013-14 & 14-15. -

Wouldn't it be something if Alfie re-signed for another year & somehow Kenny landed the Sedins in 2014? Team Sweden West indeed. I really don't think there's a snowball's chance but how pissed off would other fan bases be if they did?
