I still contend that if not for the lockout, this team would look much much different right now. Given a full training camp & pre-season, we probably would have seen at least Nyquist & Tatar up full time at the start of the season. With the compressed, shortened season, Kenny was actually pretty smart to sign some known quality veterans to plug into the lineup instead of relying on rookies. As we've seen with all of the injuries, where would the Wings be now if they had already been relying on the likes of Nyquist, Tatar, Andersson, & Lashoff before the injuries started and suddenly didn't have the same depth available in GR to keep them in the hunt for the playoffs? No need to take drastic measures, the Wings are already in the middle of a transition that will naturally accelerate come this off season.

Most of the NCAA eligible UFA lists I've seen have DeKeyser as the clear #1 target in what's being called a weak class with Sustr at either 2 or 3. I would really love to see Sustr in the winged wheel at some point with the 6'6" Rasmus Bodin up front. Sort of like everyone, including people in the Wings organ-i-zation evidently, thought Ryan Suter was a lock. Yeah, I'm with you there on the whole "counting chickens" front. He's gonna have all 30 teams going after him so the odds of some other team having a better offer, mostly about ice-time I would think, are pretty good.

Really, all this talk of letting him walk at the end of his contract for nothing vs. trading him to restock the cupboard is nothing but a thought exercise. Even if Kenny already knows that Pavel is going to walk after 2014 & go back to Russia, I doubt he would have the balls to pull the trigger on a trade anyway.

Nobody's seeing much of Karlsson right now. The fans of the Nordiques 2.0 will like this signing.
-
Given that WMU is currently sitting 9th in the rankings, even if they get bumped from the CCHA playoffs, I doubt they'll end up missing the NCAA tourney. They've got a way to go before their season's over. Now Andrej Sustr's season at Nebraska-Omaha, that's probably going to end sooner. edit: correcting Sustr's first name

So you think there's a roster player or prospect in the organization now that would bring back more value in a deadline trade than Pavel would? Please, enlighten me.
-
I think there's a greater chance you'll see Pavs & Ovie on the same line in either Washington or the KHL than in Detroit.
-
One of the reasons I would like to see Sheahan get a chance with the big club this season. The organization has him pegged as high as being a 2nd line center if his offense continues to develop like it has already in GR. Send Andersson down for a spell & let's see what Riley can do for a handful of games.
-
I do really wonder if diminishing health plays into this too. I don't recall seeing Pavel knocked off the puck or even knocked down as much as it appears he is this season before.
-
What's nuts is that he's never had a reliable backup at all & has been overworked for the past few years now. How many more years of that can Howie take before he starts to break down? Is it really 6 or 7?
-
It is but I can pretty much guarantee that if Pavs does head back to Russia at the end of next season & the Wings get nothing in return, the board with erupt with calls for Kenny's job. OK, actually that's a daily occurance anyways. I will say though that even if Pavs leaving is a lock & Kenny already knows it, I would be shocked given the history of making decisions based on sentimentality in the Wings organization if a trade were to actually happen.

Ultimately, I think a playoff run & one year of Datsyuk is the best trade chip that Holland has at his disposal right now if he wants to use it. If Paul Gaustad was worth a 1st round pick as simply a playoff rental, Pavel is worth that & much more. The Wings probably wouldn't get a top line scorer or #1 d-man back in the trade but who knows, maybe Anaheim (knowing they aren't going resign him) do a sign & trade with Corey Perry for example. At the very least though the Wings would get a good package of picks, prospects, and/or developing talent already in the NHL in order to restock the shelves so to speak. There simply isn't a single player in the organization now that would bring back as much value as Datsyuk would at this moment in my opinion, even with just a year & a half to go in the NHL if he truly does head back to Russia after next season. In my mind, it comes down to what's more valuable: One last season with Datsyuk & then losing him for nothing or in essence selling off that year to bring in talent for years to come.
-
I'll say it despite probably getting flamed for it... If this really is the case, Holland better be quietly shopping Datsyuk to a small handful of teams who think they're one player away from being a lock for The Cup this season.

I don't as much mind the cap hit as I do the years. Think how Monster looked in goal last night has anything to do with getting Howie locked up sooner rather than later? If so, I think Jimmy owes Gus a Rolex or something as thanks. Edit: After reading through the whole article, what concerns me the most is the piece about Flip supposedly wanting north of $5m a season now. Really? Really?
-
Jimmy needs to send Monster a thank you card for the assist on his new big money contract he's going to sign soon.

We are the Detroit Red Wings and we are making the playoffs

#2 seed in the East with 112 points, 1 behind Ottawa. And I can't believe the playoff discussion's gone this long with nobody else busting this out: -
Power play now 0 for 37 on the road. Brilliant....
-
No, that wasn't a PP goal. Now the one the Flames just got? That was a PP goal.
-
Great to get that goal but Abby being on the ice probably guarantees that Abby stays on the 2nd the entire game. So much for only bringing up Nyquist if he's going to play in the top 6.
-
I can just picture it now. Cleary sitting in a wicker basket, wrapped up in a bow right outside the Flames' locker room.
-
Looks like Flip will be back against Calgary & Nyquist will be in the top 6. Seeing mentions of Flip-Z-Brunner and Mule-Pavs-Gus.
-
I hope Holland at least had the decency to tell Tatar "It's not you, it's me" before breaking up with him.
-
Oh if only someone would claim Cleary if the Wings put him on waivers.
-
As I mentioned above, I'm hoping it's more of a try-out for earning a full-time spot next season with the Wings parting ways with some forwards via free agency (Cleary, Miller), buy outs (Sammy), & maybe trade/UFA (Filppula).
-
I still think it comes down to wanting to give Nyquist a look with the big club again to see what he can do. That means either Tatar or Andersson had to get sent down. You're simply swapping a LW for a LW instead of a center. Really, I wouldn't be too shocked to see Andersson get sent back down soon in a swap for Ferraro or Sheahan. It's all about giving some of the young guys a chance to start auditioning for a full-time spot next year a little early. They've got an extended look at Tatar now, let's bring the next guy in line up to see what he can do.
