Because teams facing losing a player to free agency NEVER trade them to Cup contenders to get some return on their investment right? Like say a certain former Wing for 1 season that people are still butt-hurt over Kenny not signing in favor of Franzen as a recent example? Not saying that Flip=Hossa but to say he's got no value in a trade because he's a UFA at the end of the season is a little short-sighted.

Anyone ever used a 2-3 system before?

    Why not a 2-2-2? Brunner-Hank Mule-Pavs Cleary-Flip Tootoo-Emdog Kronner-Lashoff E-White Q-Smith Howie-Monster (Bert as emergency back-up)

    Mursak on waivers

Pretty much says too that the Wings have no intention of re-signing him at the end of the season. Not a shock there. I'm calling it now though: He gets picked up by LA, signs with Colorado in the off season, & gets traded back to the Wings via a 3 way deal with Tampa for a 1st rounder in a few years.

Isles place Rick DiPietro on waivers

And here I thought we went through another lockout in part because the owners needed to shut down salary cap manipulation. Silly me...

Worthless? Seriously? I think your crush on Flip is coloring your interpretation of what I wrote a little too much. All I'm saying is it comes down to is the front office's expectations of what type of player Val would be for them going forward & whether the two sides agree to how much that's worth. It's all a value equation, that's no different for Val than it is for any other player. Let's take a look at two examples from last season, Hudler & Stuart. There was plenty of chatter in the media about neither re-signing with Huds wanting more money & a larger role on the team & Stewie wanting to go back to Cali for family reasons. Even though neither were obviously traded at the deadline despite Kenny knowing they weren't going to re-sign, you better believe it was considered. If their current+future value to the team is less than the value of what the Wings are offered in return, it can & will happen. While Huds & Stewie held no future value to the team at the trade deadline last season, they held current value at the time because the Wings were jockeying for playoff position. If they were out of the playoff hunt, current value is nil & the chances of both being traded at the deadline would have been damn close to 100% as far as I'm concerned. So let's say that Val & his agent want him paid like a top 6 defensively responsible forward who plays in all situations & puts up around 70 points a season like he did last year. We're talking Kesler/Bergeron range so put it at $5m+ a year. What if Kenny & his staff think his ceiling is the 40 point range which is worth $3.75-4m a year, Val & his agent disagree and say unless you pay him he's gone? Not out of the realm of possibility at all. (See Hudler, Jiri) If the Wings are out of the playoff hunt at the deadline, they're sure Val is going to sign somewhere else, & a playoff team is willing to offer picks and/or prospects to rent him for a run at The Cup, Kenny would be insane not to consider it. If the Wings front office doesn't know the price they would ask for every player in their organization, not just UFAs/RFAs but current rosters players & prospects too, no matter the circumstance i.e. lock for playoffs, in contention, out of the race, etc., they aren't doing their jobs. To say with 100% certainly that a player would never be traded is just ridiculous. Better believe that right now Kenny has a good idea what it would take for him to trade even Pavel. There's always a price, it's just whether or not you can find someone to meet it.

    2/21 GDT Columbus 3 @ Red Wings 2

Let's see, Sheahan is in his first full year in GR and is tied for 5th in points on the team. Think you might be rushing to judgment a bit there. Have to give credit where due too with the Wings organ-i-zation's ability to trade down out of the 1st round lately to get additional picks yet still get the player they would have taken in the 1st if they hadn't. And get talent that was rated to go in the 1st to boot actually. See Frk, Martin (2012) & Jurco, Tomas (2011) as recent examples.

Brian Burke joins Ducks as part time pro scout

A bandwagoner? Clearly he must be because he took that Toronto job in the first place because of all of their recent success in the playoffs right? This is all about Burke wanting to stay in an active role in hockey & help out an organization that he's more than familiar with. If he were a bandwagoner the annoucement would have been about him scouting for the Blackhawks.

Watch him wind up in Buffalo when Regier gets fired at the end of the season.

Pavel Datsyuk dangles the entire Predators team!

Close but not over 1,000 yet for Pavs. 987 total including playoffs, 157 points in the RSL/KHL & 830 in the NHL.

Take out Flip's 3 points from the 4th game of the year & he's put up a whopping 5 points in the past 12 games. His so called "breakout season" of 66 points last year is looking more & more like an aberration. If he really is in the Wings' long term plans, you would think Kenny's talking to his agent already about an extension. If the ceiling of his prime years is going to be as a complimentary 2nd line winger/sometime center that can't put up more than 40 points a season but plays a defensively responsible game, he shouldn't look for too much of a raise. If he is & you know you're going to cut him loose at the end of the season, flip him to a contender for at least a little compensation if you're already out of the playoff run. A little return is better than none after all.

Unless the Wings are out of the hunt, don't expect to re-sign Flip, & can get a pick or prospect from contender looking for that one last piece.

    Buffalo Fires Ruff

Jeremey Roenick calls for it & it happens. Can we get him to say publicly that someone should trade the Wings a #1 d-man for spare parts & picks too?

    Mikael Samuelsson

Flip is playing his way towards being traded at the deadline, re-signing in the offseason at a much reduced price, or leaving as a UFA. He's on pace for 41 points if this were an 82 game season, has all of 1 point in the past 5 games, & is being called out by his head coach for not showing up to play. On the Sammy front, I would say more & more that he is going to be one of the Wings' two buyouts this summer based on how the youngsters from GR are playing.

    Red Wings' Future

And from all reports, Frk plays with more than a little snarl too which is good to hear. It will be interesting though to see if he can keep playing with that edge but cut down on some of the bone-headed penalties he racks up when he loses his temper.

    Red Wings' Future

The knock I've seen on Bodin from when he was drafted is that he doesn't know how to use his size & needs to learn how to play physical. Granted at that time he was playing in the Swedish under 18 league and pretty much every hit he threw was going to be a head level. Anyways, given the fact that the Wings were the only team who scouted him & he has to learn how to play at his size (power forwards, if he really is one, take longer to develop) he's probably a few years away yet.

Pavel Datsyuk dangles the entire Predators team!

I didn't realize that Pavel played for the Tigers too. Top 10 plays instead maybe? I can't help think that for everyone who says that Kenny should do everything he can to improve the team right now trade-wise, like getting a #1 d-man AND a sniper, the player he could put on the board that's going to bring back the most instant bang for the buck? It's not Franzen or Flip or a combo of the Emmertons, Eaves, Kindls, Mursaks...it is #13. Search your feelings....you know it to be true.

    Worst Calls of the Year

With every ugly loss, not canceling my Center Ice package might just count as my worst call of the year.

Anyone else getting pissed that the Wings can't hold leads

So by that logic, if the Wings get out to a 2 goal lead, they should just turn around & put it in their own net? Poof, the worst ever lead in hockey's gone. Rest easy boys we have that so much more secure 1 goal lead back!

I would just like to point out that in TSN's current AHL player rankings, Tatar is #3 & Nyquist is #4. Carry on... http://www.tsn.ca/fantasy_news/feature/?ID=11702

    Valteri Flippula

Not as amazing as finding the Wings leading the league in fighting majors. As far as Flip, I go back & forth on him. Is he worth the raise he'll probably get to re-sign or is that money better spent elsewhere? Sure he's good defensively but he's only had that one breakout scoring season & that was playing wing, not center. If last season was just an outlier year & his ceiling really is that of an above average defensive center/sometime winger who puts up 40 points a year at best? I guess what I'm saying is that it comes down to the cap hit in my mind.

Will the NHL Ever Go to a Wider Rink?

Will the public want to help pay for the probably 15+ new arenas the owners would ask to be built to support going to a wider ice surface? Don't think they would use this move as an excuse to at least float new arena talk out there? I think a good chunk of them would, especially those sharing arenas with the NBA.
