    Free Agency Thread

Those thinking that the hawks really only have 4 mill to spend need to realize that in that cap hit right now is Huet's contract at like 5.2mill. Its rumored but fairly reasonable to expect that Huet ends up in Rockford or he ends up playing in the khl with his salary paid for by the hawks but not on the cap hit. So its more along hte lines of 9 mill cap left with 13 players signed. Which isn't as bad but its still not good. Niemi and Hjallmerson are looking at raises which will likely put both of them around 5mill. So 15 people signed 4 mill to go... little better not so good though.

Selke Trophy: Pavel Datsyuk, Ryan Kesler, Jordan Staal Hart Trophy: Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin, Henrik Sedin Jack Adams Award: Joe Sacco, Dave Tippett, Barry Trotz James Norris Trophy: Drew Doughty, Mike Green, Duncan Keith Lady Byng Trophy: Martin St Louis, Pavel Datsyuk, Brad Richards Ted Lindsay Award: Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin, Henrik Sedin Vezina Trophy: Martin Brodeur, Ilya Bryzgalov, Ryan Miller I don't understand people who are voting for Kesler for Selke, he was a +1 while playing on the 2nd highest scoring team. He may win, but it won't be just in my eyes.

    Sakic vs Yzerman Debate

How did sakic have better numbers? Yzerman 692G 1063A 1755P Sakic 625G 1016A 1641P Yzerman has more stanley cups as well. I'm suprised its in Sakic's favor. But its not that huge a difference between the players, they are both class acts and 2 of the best ever.

    Pronger Responds

HAHA ok Pronger may be one of the most hated players ever but he is so damn entertaining and he has some actual wit. The minors comment is great. Although Burrish will probably find a place somewhere.

    Would you want Byfuglien?

Byfuglien had only like 34 points in the regular season. He was a team worst -11 in the regular season. He was tied for a team worst -4 in the postseason. Byfuglien had an offensive outburst in the postseason which is why I understand the current trend to like him. He is not worth 3m. He hasn't shown that he can continually produce and do it consistently. I honestly don't see him fitting in with the Red Wings because of his semi liability in the defensive zone. He will fit in somewhere and be a major contributor but it will have to be on a certain team in which defense isn't a major priority, ie not the red wings. I don't know of a replacement for Byfuglien but I'd rather have someone like Asham. That guy played exactly how I would want someone in a Wings jersey to play and he has a nice scoring touch for being a "grinder". For the price especially Asham > Byfuglien in my mind. edit: my answer was no if you didn't get it from the post lol

    chicago-based wings fans

I also too live in the chicago area and my family happens to be long term hawks fans. So I felt for them because I know that that organization was incredibly s***ty beforehand. So i'm happy for my dad and bro. Besides that its a 50/50 draw between respectable hawks fans and the morons. The morons include the guy in the interview after the game in a large crowd. Reporter "How do you feel about winning the stanley cup?" Moron "Detroit sucks!!! YEA!!!". Yes he is a ****** as well. Another moron includes the born again hawks fan that knows everything about the hawks...but actually knows nothing. The fan that thinks the hawks are the cream of the crop organization and that no other one compares, but when confronted with actual information they don't have anything to say. The people who are adamant about information ie my GF is a brand new hockey fan, I made her a wings fan. But we are from chicagoland so we see the hawks too. Her roomie was talking about Toews. But pronouncing it "Tays" and upon my GF correcting her about it being pronounced "Tayves" she adamantly defends her Tays remark like she knows it all. These are examples of the "Fans" I can't stand being in chicago. Also Chicago fans have to secretly hate their team, I've never seen fans yell at their own players constantly throughout a game and rip into them like these fans do.

    Favorite Announcers

I cannot stand Buffalo's Announcer. Everytime there is a highlight of a buffalo goal and he get his high pitched squeal going I want someone to punch him in the face. Its possibly the most irritating voice in the NHL. Also I dislike SJ, they have unbelievable homerism. I understand that they are representing their home teams but theres a difference from being in favor of a team and denying any sort of positives in another team. Doc Emerick I really like though.

    Holmstrom signs 2 year extension

Im just curious but since babcock and holland seem to be expecting a lot out of Hudler why so many are putting him on the third line. With his offensive potential, I would better assume he is on the 1a or 1b line.

    Ben Eager

Datsyuk is tough as in he can take the punishment and keep chugging. The problem is he isn't tough in the way he plays the game, and no reason for him to be with that skill. If you are going to compare Eager vs Datsyuk in "toughness" its such a dumb argument that it shouldn't even be mentioned. Eager is not what everyone is making him out to be. Eager is not nearly as tough as people think. I would say in about 50% of the games he plays he is literally invisible. For someone who is perpetually on an "energy" line and someone who has his physical stature he shouldn't be invisible. Players don't have to score to become visible mind you. I notice Helm each and every game, not because he's putting up major points but because of work ethic and physical play. Eager disappears. I would be very disappointed if he got signed as a Wing, unless he does a Leino and flips the switch. Glimpses of noteworthy performances does not make a good player, consistency combined with those performances does.

    Ben Eager

Ben Eager would not be a good pick up at all. I am a detroit fan living in chicago, and couldn't get center ice this year, so I get to watch chicago games mostly. Eager disappears regularly and is non existent for long stretches. He only played 60 games because of frequent stretches like that. When he plays physical he plays awesome and is a great asset like these past few games in the SCF. The thing is he doesn't always have that edge. I've seen plenty of games where I just wondered why someone that big was poke checking the whole game. Investing long term or even short term based on a few games in the spotlight is a horrible practice and will usually get you in trouble. Unless the person has proven to be good consistently and for a long time these knee jerk reactions are pointless.

    Lidstrom Signs 1-Year Contract Extension

The hawks cap situation relies on 2 things, trading Huet and Trading Campbell. They suck up cap space. They can't afford anyone without moving people around because they are borderline over the cap before resigning anyone. Their top lines will be fine but theres no way they have near the depth they have this year. They'll be a playoff team but I doubt tops of the west.

    Who was your first?

I have 3 encounters. 1st I was held by Dennis Savard when I was a baby... my parents being hawks fans are very proud of that. Weird how i turned out to be a wings fan. 2nd One of the Hanson Brothers was my coach in HS for one year. He was the one that had the famous lines of "Machine took me f***in Quarter" and "I'm trying to listen to the ******* song!" He was actually really skilled, i think all 3 of those guys played in the NHL as very limited players. 3rd I see lots of people talking about meeting chelios and all that. Well I met a chelios, it was just his sister. I danced with Chelios' sister at a wedding for a couple songs. She's really cool, but looks pretty similar to Cheli, at least very greek looking.

He seems like a really cool guy, and a great rep for the Red Wings. Hopefully he gets the Calder.

    The Curse of Marian Hossa

Wow talk about similarities. My dad and little bro are hawks fans too... Although I am from the chicago land area so its hard enough on me having all these idiotic bandwagon fans. I don't care so much that the hawks win because I have seen what my dad and bro have gone through over the years. Conveniently I know a lot about the hawks so I can judge fairly. That city needs to win because next year I don't even see them being a top team again. The hossa thing is whatever, I think it might be funny, but I don't think he deserves it. He is an exceptional player. Only thing about Hossa that I dislike is the f***ed up contract that was given to him to fudge the numbers on the cap hit. I find that unfair as his .750Mill years would be played 42+ and his 1mill years would be played when he is 40. Very rarely do you find players that play that old and chances are he isn't an exception to that. I guess i should just be mad at the league and the hawks for pulling that and being allowed.

    UFA v RFA

Is the reason behind the draft pick compensation because of the fact the other team used a draft pick to get the RFA and also kind of raised them into the player they are? And does anyone else find it weird how draft picks can just be given like that?

    Teemu Selanne

I'd love to see him on the wings, but I think he's said he only wants to play for ANA or retire. I could be wrong and if the wings revamp slightly and look like a contender it might entice him over.

    Building a winning franchise

And the game is more than just points, although they do help. The advantage of having a Datsyuk or Z on your team is the all around effect they have on the ice.

    Building a winning franchise

Lundqvist - This guy would be scary with a real team in front of him. Weber - That shot and his defense is legit Doughty - Huge upside and so young but still so talented and "mature" for his age in a hockey sense. Zetterberg - He can literally play any type of game, steps up in playoffs, great leader. Backstrom - I have liked this kid since he entered the league. He is growing and I think he has an even bigger upside than he has shown, with or without ovechkin. Iginla - He brings one hell of a shot, can be physical and gritty. He is also one hell of a leader. Iginla has carried his linemates before, if he were to have these type of linemates he'd be that much better.

Easily one of the better eulogies. Had the right amount of jabs at the pens and still comical.

    .BELIEVE / Have faith, etc.

Simply put, theres nothing to lose. I was nervous and anxious before these games. Now today I'm totally chill, completely at ease. I have faith and will cheer my heart out, but I think the fact that we have no pressure and no expectations we will play how we are supposed to. I never liked how people were claiming us to be favorites in the west. Now they can just go out and play...nothing held back.
