Probably go without if it's prohibitively expensive, but very tentatively. Beat-up old furniture which is being replaced: try to get rid of it on Freecycle and Craigslist, or just carry it out to the dumpster?

Surprisingly I was in a decent mood, considering how little sleep I got. The person below me has to deal with people at work whose first language is not the same as theirs, and receives emails from such people with unintentional weird phrases such as "please to do the needful." (Which is in an email I just received.)

No, much as I'd love to hire housecleaning help during some of my busier weeks. That is NOT in the budget. The person below me is having issues with trusting someone.
