right but... 186 days in a regular season. staios' yearly salary is $2.7 million, making his daily 'hit' $14,516.13. 41 days left in the season gives us a total of ~$595K, which is what you said. so then, to get staios we would have to clear ~$595K off our salary for those 41 days which would end up being equivalent to a $2.7 million/year salary. this $2.7 mil number is the player's cap number, which stays the same throughout the season. i guess we were trying to say the same thing but in different ways. originally it sounded to me like you were saying that all we had to do is get rid of a player who makes $595K per year and we could fit staios in. however, as i was typing this i realised that you were not saying that. edit: aren't modano, ozzie, homer, and stuart on LTIR already? also, as far as i understand it, a player going on LTIR can be replaced and a team can go over the cap limit (if they are right up against it at the time of injury) but must become cap compliant as soon as the injured player returns. for example, if we put modano on LTIR and at that time we had $0 in cap space, we could then go over the cap limit by exactly the amount that modano is making, but as soon as modano is taken off LTIR we would have to become cap compliant. therefore, putting players on LTIR doesn't really solve our problem of freeing up the money for a deadline acquisition.

player's cap numbers stay the same throughout the season though

pretty dumb of johnson to get into a fight with less than a minute left and a shutout on the line

you mean that's not him in drag? -
so, why didn't the devils and/or oilers put in a claim too? by your logic, they should have. right?
-
why? 2.7 mil for a guy who isn't good enough to be our #6 d-man (when everyone is healthy)

the nhl should do what the nba does for their skills competition. invite certain players who posses a lot of skill in a particular area (e.g. in the nba: three point shooting, dunking) and have them compete alongside the "true" all-stars. in the nhl, this would mean that we could see guys like helm in the fastest skater competition, even though he wouldn't be playing in the actual game. we could also see other guys in the nhl who can shoot 100+ mph, or guys who are really good and creative on breakaways, etc. the way the nhl has it set up right now, we get to see which all-star is the fastest (even though we know there are guys in the nhl that are faster). if they changed the format (and not to mention get some competent people to run the thing), it would improve the quality of the event for the fans.

no, that pavel is "just a pure dangler" and that flip could "easily be as dominant as datsyuk." all he has to do is shoot more and he would be as effective in a game as pavel? flip can't even shoot so i don't see what the point of him shooting more is. i get that you're saying flip could potentially be a dominant player and that he would do it in a different way than pavel, and i agree with that. but to suggest that he could ever reach datsyuk's level (in any facet of the game), that i do not agree with. the best flip can hope for is to become 'datsyuk lite' in a couple of years. btw, i'm not a flip hater like some people on here. i know he's an asset to this team, and his positioning, defense, and skating are superb. it's just that datsyuk is on a super-human level in almost every aspect of the game. i'm just being realistic when comparing these two.

this is a joke, right?

agreed but... the fact that the guys are forced to clear out the front of the net 8-10 times per game is howard's fault

quote of the year -
i like when they play "hooked on a feeling" after a hooking call, or when they play "I fought the law." i think it's kinda funny, like they're sticking it to the player for getting a penalty

exactly. the rule, as it stands now, actually prevents teams from signing overseas players. the only way you can get a player is if another team signs him and then you try to claim that player off waivers. i understand that this rule prevents teams from signing a whole bunch of KHL players (for practically nothing) towards the end of the season in order to help them in the playoffs. however, would it not have been simpler, and fairer, to make a rule that says you are allowed to sign only one of these such players and that way you get rid of the whole waiver nonsense. the waiver rule just doesn't seem fair to anyone involved.

that seems pretty unreasonable. so, if a player retires in june after winning the stanley cup and then, over the summer, decides to come back for one more year, he would have to sit out that season and try to make a comeback the following season?
-
bah, if only he had been born in 1976 edit: i thought that only applied to multi-year deals
-
anyone out there know what would happen if nabokov files for retirement? does his current contract then end? can he then come out of retirement? what happens after that?
-
i agree. remember two weeks ago when vancouver won 36-1. that was embarrassing, wasn't it?
-
well this post officially has exhausted all of the misspellings of nabokov's name. i saw nabakov, nobokov and now nobakov. sorry, don't mean to single you out.

definitely NOT howard's fault today. oh, and kronwall needs to see dr. rahmani asap.
